Penelope wears yellow for a specific reason. It matches several of her personality traits and is also symbolic. She wears mostly yellow dresses in season 1, and in season 2, she starts to wear more pink ones. While bright, bold, colourful dresses are representative for all the Featherington family members, they are also specific to Penelope's authentic and inathuentic personas. She also wears a green dress once in season 2, which is a hint at her storyline in season 3 with Colin Bridgerton.
The costume designer for Bridgerton season 1 is Ellen Mirojnick and is Sophie Canale for season 2 ♡

I love how they’ve intentionally kept Penelope out of blue so far. I predict that when Pen has her “glow up” moment in S3, they’ll finally put her in blue, which will be a visual cue for the viewer that Colin is starting to see Penelope in a new light
Yes! I bet that’s what will happen too! Since it occurs in the books. More specifically, she starts wearing green a lot. Which I think will look lovely on her.
Blue is the colour the bridgerton family wears the most 💙
@@thecalmingwitch I really really hope they use the green dress
tbh the whole “she gets skinny so Colin likes her” trope doesn’t rlly sit well with me so I hope she stays exactly the same because we all love her just as she is and Colin should too
@@hipeople1265 yes I agree! It’ll be controversial of course, 🙄 because of boomers and the sex scenes(on a sidenote now that I think of it, the 70s were just as gutsy if not more so!) Anyways she deserves to be loved just as she is and I think that’s exactly what they’re going to do. Except change her wardrobe and maybe hair styles.
Fun fact! Yellow is also a sign of friendship! That's why you give friends yellow flowers as opposed to red. I think that that's an important detail because Penelope truly believes that she will only ever be a friend to Colin :)
Wait it is??? Huh...
All of a sudden the yellow tulips my dad bought for my mom's wedding bouquet means something else...
@@EsiNotEssie I mean, not necessarily... most guys don't know flower language anymore, they'll often just get something that looks pretty
@@EsiNotEssie to be fair, a lot of modern men post 1940’s aren’t aware of flower language.
Thank you both for the explanation
This could also make sense too as she always wore yellow as a friend to El. As she wrongs her best friend, her outfits transitions from friendly yellow to other colors.
I love how the clothes have a meaning!!
Thanks 4 the likes
i think especially since bridgerton is a more guilty pleasure/fluffy type show, i love that they were still so thoughtful about the costumes 💛
Yes @artatmidnight
@@artatmidnight also I saw on the green dress it had pink accents which supports green representing the love between her and colin!
(Also quick question, what show is this? It seems interesting!)
Thanks for Bandera
Ooo
yellow is also just the color chosen for her in the books because her mother control her life at that point and feels as though yellow is the color of “happy girls” so it is basically in an attempt to attract a husband, but it is still interesting that the show has other reasons to carry on with that detail ;)
Yes this is the reason why pen always wear yellow clothes
Yellow can also mean greed. You can see in S2 Ep8, she wears yellow during her fight with Eloise. She said she gave up Lady Whistledown for her, but when Eloise left, she got her paper and pen and started writing all over again. She’s greedy now, she’s started her lies and conflict. Yellow represents so much of Penelope’s personality, it also represents betrayal which really fit when she started writing her last of first Lady Whistledown paper.
@@plmdea no, but in the book, she never confessed to Eloise. Lady Danbury was the one knows she's the lady whistledown, next Benedict and lastly she tells Eloise when she was planning to quit. Penelope in the book and Penelope in the tv series aren't much very like. Pen in series is becoming greedy as hell because her pen name as lady whistle down becoming a boom. But pen in the book she wants to quit as a lady whistledown because the people surrounding her are fighting. After all, I remember at the party lady Danbury challenges the people to find the real lady whistledown (but she knows it's Penelope) and the people become suspicious of everyone to the point they become hated each other. That's the reason why pen quit as lady whistle down she doesn't want everyone to be mad because of finding the real lady whistledown. She's down to earth in the book but in the series, they change her into a greedy woman.
@@uoebsjs3059 oh…i never read the book, my family are kinda saving money rn too but i heard it was better than watching Bridgerton so i’m pretty excited to read it in the future. Huh, i never knew any of that, thanks!
Yeah…it’s from the books. When she is finally able to dress herself she looks better because yellow never suited her.
I met Nichola, the girl who plays Penelope at a party once in 2019 and she was just the sweetest person. She danced with me when my boyfriend was being too shy to, and chatted with me when I didn't really know many people there, and was just generally lovely 😊
That’s really cool! She seems like a down to earth nice person! I want to meet her one day, she’s really a great character in Bridgerton, plus she’s making a comeback.
💛💛💛
LUCKYYYYY im such a fan of her T_T
I loved her in Derry Girls.
@@zahraansari3710 Same! I'm really going to miss that show
I can't wait to see what they'll do with her wardrobe for season 3. Her independence, confidence, and self assurance will mostly likely be at it's peek (hopefully) especially now that her rose-colored glasses view of Colin is now gone. This is gonna be good 😁😁
yes ! if she wears more green, i’m hoping it will go from pale to vibrant as her character develops more ! 💚
@@artatmidnight Yeeeesss I'm also kinda hoping they try emerald green for some reason I just want to see her in it 😀
oh my gosh… yes! I know for certain green will be her color once she’s married, kinda combining the Featherington yellow and Bridgerton blue. But I can’t help to wonder what her color will be now that she isn’t influenced by her mother or love
I loved this insight! And it’s amazing how some series are bringing more information to the characters by the use of colors in the scenes.
thank you! bridgerton does a great job with using colour to express all the different characters & families, especially when there are so many ! 💛
**this is just based on the show, not the books! i believe in the books it’s bc yellow is ‘happy’ which her mom thinks will attract a suitor. but the costume designers took their own liberties when making the designs 💛
the costume designer for Bridgerton season 1 is Ellen Mirojnick and is Sophie Canale for season 2 ♡
I spent most of the day reading the first book and I accidentally read almost all of it in one day
It's so good so far!
Yees, in the books her mom always makes she use yellow by saying it's a happy color, but she often is criticized by the color for making her look sick and unattractive, and I think that she says that using yellow is actually sad for her, but I may be confusing
Thanks for this explanation because when I watched the video at first I thought “did the costume designer not read the books?!!” Lol
@@tdp8212 same! I thought why all the meanings? Just follow the book. 😂
Thank you! Literally came here to say this and you did it for me! Cheers!
I love how she likes to write and her name is “Pen” 😏
Exactly what I thought in season 1 when it was revealed she’s Lady Whistledown.
Yellow is also very specifically mentioned throughout the books, long before the costume designer was working on Bridgerton. In the books wearing yellow allows Kate and Penelope to bond, which in turn results in Anthony showing great kindness to Penelope in front of Kate. And it's the first time that Kate sees Anthony in a different light. It's a shame the show cut that scene, because it was a great scene for Anthony and shows his empathetic side in front of the Ton.
Love how yellow went from joy and friendship to now cowardice and deceit
In ep 4 where she wore green at the ball, at first I thought it showed her jealousy towards Colin visiting Marina and not being able to get over her even after she was married. But I never thought about yellow and blue making green lol, which is more accurate.
According to the costume designer it's in the book. That's why. In the book it's because her mother thinks it's a happy colour. Penelope hates it.
Was coming here to say this
Yes! The books!
Was looking for this comment
yes, and after she married Colin, she starts using other colors more suited for her complexion.
In the books Penelope doesn’t like yellow either but I think she looks great in it, really nice contrast to her red hair 😍
“Cowardness”💀
FR 😂
Cowardice, but yes.
Me who's favourite colour is yellow :'(
Its covertness
She looked so cute when she was running like that❤
*Buddhist monks told me that yellow was the color of warmth, earth, energy and a humble soul. I used to wear so much black and other dark colors. One day I saw this yellow shirt, I took the chance to wear it and since then have fell in love with wearing/having yellow things. It makes me feel happy and safe.*
Cowardice not coward-ness--unless I misheard. I'm part of an elite squad known as the "grammar police" reporting for duty.
nice
I'm relieved to see you protecting our realm so it doesn't falls into the hands of the wicked
@allbluberries
You missed the one above you. Bold print.
I'm on leave this week.
If I remember correctly, the book also mentioned that Penelope oftrn dressed in citrus colours because of her mom. Yellow is citrusy.
Every time i see one of Penelope's green dresses from s3 I can't stop thinking about what you said about the colour green
In the books it's mentioned specifically that Penelope wears yellow because her mom thinks it's a happy color. "And a happy color makes a happy girl and happy girls get proposals."
(Also fair to note that Mrs. Featherington mentions that she never thought that Penelope would get married and take care of her as an old maid.)
Penelope is genuinely so sweet and caring. I hope she gets her happy ending. I was so mad in S1 when Marina wanted take away Colin from Pen
She so beautiful!, netflix needs more shows with her
I'm so early ahh ! I'd love a whole bridgerton analysis video from you one day 🥺🤍
omg thank you 🥹 maybe after S3 comes out ! 💛
Me who has never watched Bridgerton:
“Interesting”
this video has found its way back to me and this video was why i even started to watch it in the first place! i was so intrigued by penelope as a character i’m excited to see who she was and now in season 3 i am so happy how far she came as a character
Actually, it's because of the books. She wears it because her mom chose it, because yellow is a "happy" color, and guys want to be around a happy person. But even in the books it's a bad color choice for her. It's only when she's firmly "on the shelf" that she starts being able to chose her own wardrobe, and the colors suit her better
What color does she choose ?
@@a.g.demada5263 I'm pretty sure it's blue, but it's been a while since i read the book, so i'm not positive about that
@@MickyDVeteran ah ok. Thank you
Love there color psychology stories
Their
Crazy how colors of outfit in olden times represented "status" "personality"......Instead of just cuz 😆
I remember that Penelope hates yellow in her book and even wrote in public that she looks like "an overripe citrus fruit"... When she is finally 28, she was finally allowed to wear green which Colin finally realized she's special...
Also in the books Kate’s mother talks about the Featherington sisters, saying that the girls would look much better in a blue or green. This points to Pen getting into her Bridgerton role, almost like it was always meant to be?
“How many times have you watched this?”
Yes
the costume designer grabbed a color wheel and the emoji keyboard and started matching them together
I love the color yellow and that very meaning for the color fits me perfectly
Yellow was chosen because that's what's in the books
She looks so pretty in pink and green
We gonna talk about that sneak peak into Collin’s bedroom for season 3? Bc he has yellow sheets.
Yellow was not the choice of the costume designer, her wearing yellow was a massive theme within the book 😭
Yellow was also the color her mother chose in the books. I think this all falls under the “don’t overthink it” category
Yellow is my favourite colours.... I feel attacked lol
Same lmao
I thought their story was season 4 and Benedict is season 3.
i believe benedict is next in the books (although i haven’t read them) but it was confirmed recently that penelope & colin will be S3 for the show
@@artatmidnight i’m fairly sure - just from what i’ve heard - that they may be running alongside each other. in any case, pushing back colin and penelope for longer would likely only make them more unlikeable/annoying as this season really took their characters downhill
maybe
They can’t do An Offer From a Gentleman yet because they haven’t laid the groundwork for it. I predict that the party where Penelope has her glow up moment might also be the party Sophia sneaks into and she meets Benedict.
The show probably wants to be come across as “realistic” in terms of the fact that siblings don’t get married in chronological order. At least not normally. So instead, they’ve probably decided to fallout of the order of the books and create their own timeline of when each couple falls in love. Which, aside from the shows historical inaccuracies, makes for a more realistic story.
spoiler alert if you havent gotten to season 2 i accentally googled (during season one) "why does penelope wear yellow" and it told me she was lady whistledown, i was so mad lmao
"Accidentally"?
@@Stonytude well i mean i didnt want to see that huge spoiler, i hadnt read the books or anything, and i didn't think it was going to be such an integral part of the story, but it said "well since she's lady whistledown and shes jealous etc." i was so shocked and i laughed but i was a bit upset
noooo i just started watching this seriess
Book 4 when her and Colin get together, he outs her in an attempt to stop the lady.... (Bitch woman in Daphne's season) from outting Penelope as lady whistledown because Penelope refused to be blackmailed
Yellow is also often associated with false gold. You'll notice it in other works like The Great Gatsby in which all of the old money characters where white and gold but Gatsby, new money and low born, is always draped in yellow but never gold.
I thought she was too attractive to play Penelope but she did such a good job in both seasons. I was torn.
I won’t lie Pen deserves to be a Bridgerton ❤️🔥🔥🔥 she’s such a graceful soul and that beauty aura of the Bridgerton family ❤
when she said "yellow can be associated with coward" i thought about zenitsu Demon Slayer fans will know
Also yellow is the colour of communication - and she is the one communicating to the public as lady whistledown
She look most pretty in yellow🌸
She's so adorable 😭❤️❤️
And i think it also relates to sunflower that is always unnoticed but very powerful just like how she is whistledown
She's so cute, yellow with ginger hair is beautiful together!
yellow was one of the colors her mom preferred from the book so it wasn’t the costume designers decision…and in the book her mom preferred “happy” colors like yellow to attract a suitor
The only thing I keep thinking in awe is holy crap she reminds me of beauty and the beast she would make a beautiful belle
🤭.
She really wore pink whenever her mother is not around. Remember the ball miss Thompson was "sick" and her mother wasn't able to attend?
Interesting note is also that yellow is typically a colour that grabs your attention the most. (of course depending on the environment you're in) The reason why "caution" tape and things that try to sell you stuff by a smaller price is also often yellow. So it's kinda funny that even with that colour she is still seen as invisible.
Red heads in green is always a great choice
It’s also written in the book that she always wears yellow
During the Regency period yellow also signified wealth and standing.
In the books she wears yellow for alot of the books since her mother forces her too because it is a ‘happy colour’
I noticed that the Bridgertons wear pastels and the Sharmas always wear the “cool” tones, purple, blue and green. Like Kate always wears purple or blue and its maybe symbolic but tbh it just looks really good on her 😩🤚
Green is also a color of a new beginning as well as the color of relief
I loved how she started out in yellow and Colin always wore a variation of blue, and when they started developing a bigger attraction and integrating into each other's lives, she began wearing green.
Bro this story is the only reason I'd watch the show.
To me yellow represents friendships, and how penn is always pushed into the friendzone by colin
Don’t forget, she also wore it in the book which was described of going terribly with her red hair.
The color yellow looks good on her, but the green and pink is on another level, it's like it is her own color, especially the green.
Ive never watched bridgerton but I keep seeing these shorts and I love the detail they’re putting into just the costumes! I gotta get on this, the ladies look so beautiful in their dresses too
the green was so cute
The Green !!!!😌
Yellow is such a happy pretty color I like it
Until you read the books and discover that there is a running joke that Penelope's mother always dresses her in yellow though it doesn't fit her because she thinks it looks more joyful
my favourite character is penolope, she is a GENİUS!when i started watching bridgerton again i saw that the language of penolope, lady whistledown is so good for me,i am not a native speaker in english and i think she writes really good, making her point directly but not in harsh way.
The pink looks so pretty on her
She's very pretty
I always thought yellow is the color of the Bee, that they often show as flying from one household to another for gossips!
Her wearing yellow reminds me of a yellow Canary ..”sing like a canary” which she sort of does by exposing others in her writings.
Listen people can hate on this show all they want but look at the effort of the crew. love these costume design reveals!
She doesnt need a glow up, shes already beautiful 💕
she is seriously so beautiful
She looks beautiful in green
I have to say this the bridgerton costume designers are geniuses
Yellow also relates to the Earth element and being grounded.
Can we wait a minute to appreciate how her clothes looks amazing on her.
Yellow could also be considered a happy colour showing that other people may have considered her as content with being single.
However, this could represent her status in the earlier seasons as a wall flower as she only felt brave enough to stand up for herself through her persona Lady Whistedown.
It really looks pretty on her!
Wow, props to the costume designers.
Suddenly, Janus being yellow makes so much more sense.
In consistent fandom sense, though, awesome video! These are all super interesting and cool to know!
She looks so stunning in everything !! 💞
She is so beautiful
Damm i actually love yellow
I’m pretty sure in the books it states that Lady Featherington dresses the girls in yellow because she thought it would convey cheeriness.
In the books het mom makes her wear yellow. In the 4th book (her and Colin’s love story) she’s finally allowed to wear what she wants as she is in the end of her 20s
Yellow is also a color of jealousy
No that's typically green. "Green with envy"?
@@bidishah thats true but yellow is also associated, but green is also associated with more good things, while yellow in a subtle way
@@bidishah in our country and culture it's "the green eyed monster/ monster with green eyes" for jealousy and "the yellow envy is eating him up" for envy...
@@bidishah yellow actually is one of the most hated colors, together with orange.
Yes, it’s also seen as a symbol for jealousy, unwellness, etc
So basically yellow can mean anything
This is soooooo pleasing
I’m so curious how they will write Penelope & Colin’s story because the way they wrote Penelope in the second season is different than the book. I just finished reading Penelope & Colin’s book which was funny, witty and romantic I really enjoyed it so I’m curious how their storyline will be written.
In the book
Her mother specifically dresses her in sunny colors to give off a sunny and cheerful demeanor to suitors
I love Penelope 💖💖💖 looking forward to S3 so much and hope her and Colin will finally share their love
I love when the costumes are really thought through
damn she's so fucking pretty 😍
The costumes are just beautiful!
