  • The Waterford - Ballinacourty line lost it's traffic in 1982 following the Closure of Quigley Magnasite. The IRRS ran a farewell spl over the line on the 24th July 1982. Filmed on 8mm sound , mono.

A masterieice of a film showing beautifully: the crossing over the Suir Bridge from Waterford West; & later: crossing back over the bridge to Waterford, It was great to see Kilmeaden & Kilmacthomas: stns, along with the various crossings and scenery and the old track bed to Mallow!

Thanks for uploading Tom. I was 16 when I travelled on that spl. I got a spin from Durrow to Kilmac on the way back with Johnny Barry. Guard was Kevin Walsh I think. A very young Ian Wicks at Waterford West on the way out.

Great Video Tom. Lovely to see the old times on film. I wasn't even born yet lol Am I right in thinking that the train from Tivoli, Cork to the Magnesite plant in Ballinacourty ran to Limerick Junction Then went to Waterford and then back out to Ballinacourty? If so would it not have been prudent to keep the Mallow/Dungarvan section open to cut out the extra distance required by travelling onto limerick.

That is correct , had the line from Mallow been still open it would have ran via Mallow.

Thank you for preserving the sights and sounds from this era, now lost. Were those "mating" tank wagons at 10:46 the remnants of a "rough shunt"...?
