why not get a single in the middle, hums at the neck and bridge (i say this as someone who owns an HSS strat, i never use the neck pickup) or alternatively active pickups which can act as both singles and humbuckers
fender jagtang. its pretty pricey, but its the same guitar kurt cobain used and pretty much designed. has a single coil neck pickup and a humbucker bridge pickup
It sounds like the tone knob is rolled back slightly. I do this on my telecaster when playing distorted, and it really thickens the sound and takes away the shrill high end.
Single coils! They always sound clear bright and articulate. If you want to muffle them a bit you can roll the tone a little. Humbuckers USUALLY have a fuzzy muffled sound to me and you can't add brightnes and clarity with a knob!
Distorted single coil really suck on riffing.. But sound good on leads or cleans stuff.. Humbucker have punchy sound on distorted riffing, but lack of high end also more dark too.. Both good for it's path..

Single coils prob. but each have their uses. More articulation with singles but more umpf from dual coil.
Layer both in the studio and then you don’t have to compromise. Blend best aspects of each guitar together. That’s how I roll 😎

Maybe there was more of a noticeable difference back when humbuckers where invented.
