This just maybe the answer I've been looking for. I have my in-laws that have some issues getting to their church nowadays, the church livestreams on youtube every Sunday but they end up watching it on a smaller computer screen uncomfortably in their bedroom since it's a link in their e-mail. I've been trying to set it up on their TV with a Roku, but they find the navigation frustrating and often give up. If I can give figure out how to set up a simple one purpose solution that takes them directly to the latest live video every Sunday without having to remember commands, navigation or search terms it would be a big win. Thanks, I'll be checking this out.

Neat, it's good to have more ways to do things. You can also do this with Raspberry Pi OS, have it auto-log a selected user and launch a program at startup. Might be a video idea to show the generic Linux method for setting that up.

@@ciarangoldrick4121 It'll depend on what you use as a display manager. If we're talking about the Pi, mine may be out of date, but I've got lightdm and you can setup a user auto login in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, but if you've got some other system installed you'll have to figure out what display manager you're using. On my desktop, I've got Slackware and I use sddm coupled with KDE, so I can just open up the system settings and set it up from there. A nice rule of thumb would be to open up a terminal and navigate to /etc and then do ls -d *[Dd][Mm]* and see if there's a folder or .conf file pertaining to a known DM.

I wounder how easy it would be to replace Chromium with Electron. Electron allows for auto play with audio for videos (which I've done). Plus Electron can be used as a server to make changes by logging into the Pi and also add a bunch of plugins and such later down the line.

Imo using a web browser to auto play videos/gifs is not the best idea
If i were to do something similar i would use MPV for videos and feh for images or swww for gifs/images it also has transition animations too
But otherwise yeah that’s an overly simplified way of doing things of that nature

Does the "embed" feature also disable YT's deadman switch? If you don't make any inputs for a while, YT pauses on its own and asks in you're still there.

So I’ve looked at other variations of automation like this. My use case is even a bit simpler as I don’t want to connect to WiFi or but simply read a attached usb device and loop videos. There are other options out there but all seem to need two things. 1) an old version of adafruit video looper that tells me.
Is no longer there or 2) stops at a prompt to “insert” a usb device, this is great but I still must physically interact to initiate. Any thought how I can automate to the level you have here where (once power is turned on) it would go all the way to the point of reading the usb already in the RPI and start playing / looping and not stop until power is shutoff?
I want this to automate outdoor videos to play from my RPi on a timer so it runs each night. Any thoughts on how I could incorporate what you’ve done here but with local files? Thx again and great video!!
