New shelves! Whalen 5-tier metal shelves from Costco

- I couldn't stand my old patchwork shelves. But I'm too poor to buy incredible barrister shelves. And I'm too inept to build custom shelves. So when I saw these Whalen 5-tier metal shelves at Costco for $95 I strongly considered getting one. When they went on sale for $75 I had to buy three.
One problem--one set of shelves was missing some pretty important parts. I tried to get the parts directly from Costco but they wouldn't get them for me. They told me I had to buy a new set and return the one with missing parts. Then they sold out of the shelves. I went back a few times (two hours round trip) with no luck. I ended up making my own (fingers-crossed) solution. Yes, the shelves were cheap, but I should get what I paid for.

You can build a series of steps on each shelf, might be able to place 3 steps on each shelf each step a little higher.
That's what I was going to mention. I have the same setup, but honestly does look very warehousey.

Double-shelf each shelf, with a short stair/platform (styrofoam planks from Home Depot) behind the first row so that the second row of books behind the first row is raised a half-foot (or whatever the height allows). That way you maximize book storage capacity for each shelf *and* fill the depth. I have several bookcases filled with mmpbs arranged exactly that way…works great👍🏻 .
I'm tempted to try this but I predict that procrastination driven by overwhelm and anxiety will scrub those plans. But I love the idea.

Ikea worked great for me with order online with a time slot given for pick up. No extra charges for this or for expensive delivery. My Ikea is 1.5 hrs away so this was the only way I could buy and get what I wanted. They were out of stock otherwise by the time I got there.
Yeah, that's the issue I'm dealing with. I'm over two hours away and they won't deliver to me. And I'm not sure they'll have the number of shelves I'll need to make the trip worthwhile. When I recently returned to Chicago, we arranged an Ikea delivery for 5 Henmes shelves so I could bring them back for me. When the truck arrived, they only had three. We cancelled it and then we found the ones I'm using.
@@THEJEFFWORD Yeah. That's why I bought them online with store pickup. They reserve and collect the items for you. You get a timeslot for pickup and a notice when your order is ready for that timeslot. I purchased early workday morning, picked an afternoon timeslot, and got a notification before my timeslot that my items and timeslot were confirmed. When you get to the store you pull into special parking spots and text a number and they bring them to your vehicle. And for me to find the items in stock meant checking a lot as I bought them in May 2021 when Billy shelves were out of stock across the country.
When I did my renovations I bought 5 of the Billy Bookcases from Ikea. I had them shipped to the house. They hold books really well. I like your setup though. Lots of room.
Yeah, we wanted the Henmes cases by Ikea, but we're too far for delivery.
Congratulations on your new set up, Jeff. I recently bought 4 new shelves that were about a foot deep and that bugs me (my ideal depth is about 9 inches). I can't imagine having two feet. Also, it drives me nuts how much space is between the top of the books and the next shelf. They could easily squeeze at least one more shelf in most of these.
It's a departure for me as well. I'm predicting a set of new shelves in the future. But not the near future.
I know the feeling! We are ordering 3 or 4 more shelves as well. And I still can't figure out where Knowing Darkness is going.

I just bought one of these tonight. OMG that damn box was so heavy, I barely got it into my house.
If you moved them yourself, you got a workout at no extra charge--those are 92 pounds each! Did you get them on sale? Normally, they're $94, but I've bought them on sale twice. Once for $74 and once for $79. That's an insane bargain. I haven't see shelves of this quality for this cheap anywhere.
I thought if you arranged those shelves whereby the three are perpendicular to the wall you could arrange like a public library and place the books “back to back”. You’d have four “aisles” of books and not the most ideal for gazing at your collection, you’d get the most storage out of each shelf.
I was going to do that exact thing. But having that short side against the wall didn't prvide enough stability.
I was thinking of doing that with two large Ikea Kallax cube shelves. On carpet I don't know how stable they would be. A vinyl record RUclipsr said his Kallax shelves kollapsed while he as out. 😳

I just put that piece of garbage back in a box to take back to Costco. Unbelievable that they sell such an abysmal waste of your time. From somebody who has purchased built shelves over the years this is one of the worst
I guess I wasn't expecting a whole lot at that price. I now have new bookshelves (I'll do a video about the updated library) but I put the Whalens in the garage. I bolted them to the wall and bound them to each other with clamps. They're not budging.
