ahahaa holy shit i think there might be 1 1/2 minutes of commentating over a 22 minute video. the fuck are we doing canada?!?! put some metallica in there or something
To anyone who carried this thing: you have my respect. I used my dad's old pattern 82 rucksack when I first got into ruck marching. I loaded it with steel weights, 70 pounds. This ruck has no sternum strap, the waist belt is just unpadded webbing and when you tighten the shoulder straps the bare straps will dig into you under the arms. I did 10km during the winter with 70lbs twice a week and yea, I salute you if you carried this in the army!
@@gavins9846 that's brutal lol but if you think of it from a training standpoint; it's an experience. You can get better kit down the road and think back on the awful 82 you had to hump 😂
'82 pattern gear is the tiniest improvement upon the grossly inadequate Oliver pattern leather equipment foisted upon the Canadian Army in the Boer War and much of the Great War.
Yeah, and briefs, t shirt and socks should be rolled together. Except for 1 pair of socks in an outer pocket. Is this the 82 pattern? Like the silent keepers on the outer pockets.
A perfect example of Do as I say, not as I do, your reward for noting that lesson earns you tea and biscuits whilst the rest of your section performs gravity checks...
I'm halfway through the (Canada) driest video ever. MND couldn't even spring for a mic in the room with our faithful demonstrator. No, you'll do it all in silence, and under our one electric light-bulb. We have to pay by the word on voice-over so let's keep it tight.
yuKeepFcknWitMEEEE Hah. I had to watch the video as I thought you meant they had him pack his armor plates. Would never have even occurred to me that he was bringing flatware :D
diederik vl: There was no "Sense of Urgency" in packing. In a real time situation when time is short - you can pack it in 2 minutes - i know that for a fact - had it screamed during training - "PACK FASTER"!! LOL By the Training NCOs. 😂😂
I remember assembling the 82 pattern rucksack the day before leaving for CFB Meaford on the parade square of the John Weir Foote armories in Hamilton in the summer of 04.
Btw - if you load a bin liner into your ruck then load the ruck there's a higher chance you'll rip and pierce the bin liner than if you preload it and slot it in.
Kit bag on the kit truck is where most of that stuff goes. Ruck is for ammo, water and bare essentials. You won't be sleeping beauty till you feel safe. He's packing for a camping trip, not combat.
Canada is not Florida. You leave stuff like your sleeping bag behind and the enemy just has to wait 24 hours and then loot the human popsicles. Unlike in the US our kit is not designed primarily for invading other countries either. Like most European armies a lot of our gear is designed to fight a defensive action on your own turf.
Also what you describe (ammo, water and bare essentials) is what your LBE is for not your ruck. The original manuals for the 82 pattern stuff is online and it was never intended that you would be fighting with a ruck on your back.
Red River Scout I had to stay up fully dressed with minor naps 72hrs during winter conditions. That's just training, during offensive operations I'm sure I would been alert the entire time.
this reminded me of how much I hated trying to gear up in the Army. I use an alice pack which i have modified after getting out of the army but a lot of the gear issued never packed well. There are much better solutions civilian made which has made the pack awesome, hopefully the military has helped the soldier with new lighter tech, remember he doesn't have his weapons or ammo.
I love the large alice packs... go bigger i go bust and wont be able to move as i was always a pack rat. I always got the list plus some in those things.... i still use one to this day being out its my bugout/ camping bag.
Holy fabrics and linen. As an ultralight backpacker you'd think he's taking all that to offer the local mosque as prayer mats. No way I got space for that in my pack; wheres the food go?
Wow, they really just let a guy with a uniform from the 2010's struggle stuffing gear from the 90's in a pack from the 70's and call it a 'training video', huh?
It actually is not a bad idea. It is cheaper and do you really need a custom made liner? I mean it is not a high end camping trip. Plus one cool trick with using plastic bags (I have seen it demonstrated with an ALICE pack) is you can use them for buoyancy so your ruck will actually float if you need to cross a river. Every bag liner I have seen would be kind of useless for that. That being said if you really want a ruck with a bag liner there is a company that makes a 64 pattern ruck that has a bag liner.
I had a garbage bag in my ruck during reserve BMQ at FYA and we used the same ruck in this video. I was 7TOR out of MPA. Sadly I only made it as far as the last 2 weekends of my BMQ-L before my knee gave out on me. 130Bty, hua! Mind you I did get to have the Meaford experience before my hopeful career in the forces went down the shitter. But yeah, I don't see the problem with using a garbage bag as a liner to be honest. Maybe I'm old fashion in saying this but if it works, it works and I'll use it. (or it could just be that I'm too lazy to make the trip up to the Dennison stores to get one, if they even give them out there. No idea. lol)
Tip #1- ditch the 82 pat POS ruck and get something decent. Don't take a bunch of unneeded crap like melmac plate and cup. There should be a canteen cup at bottom of canteen. No need for second shirt or trousers. Socks good, less underwear. Long johns not needed if warm enviro. Unless going to the arctic, ditch the hood and one of the sleeping bags. I see he had a fleece toque - wear that to bed. The early 90s Canadian attempt at the poncho liner was crap: too heavy and bulky. I swear that thing was essentially an old wool blanket sewn into left over rain suit nylon. Rubbish. The better CADPAT one didn't come out for a while so do like we all did - buy US Army poncho liner at their PX, used at surplus store or order via a catalogue. Speaking of which, where is this OCdt sleeping? I don't see any string etc for making a shelter so I assume he'll be in a mod tent with his buddies. In that case, no need for a shelter half or even the bivvy bag - those are for real soldiers. For that matter, he doesn't even need a poncho liner. Ablution kit is unnecessarily bulky. Don't use full-size towel - not going to lay on the beach. The hand towel is sufficient. The horrendously heavy and bulky angle head flashlight? You kidding me? The narrator makes an error when he says "you put the air mattress in the 'stuff sack' with the sleeping bag". He must have been reading from an old script from when we still used the black 'rubber lady' inflatable air mattress. It's inefficient to stuff the thermarest in the valise. He seems smart enough to pack the valise in reverse order - you don't want to have to haul out the sleeping bag to get at shelter making stuff - especially in the rain. The valise needs to be cinched tighter. Compress with knee and cinch the string progressively - like lacing a boot. The opposite D rings should touch each other. Admittedly hard to do with so much extra crap like the outer sleeping bag etc. The end drawstring needs to be cinched tighter so that the white label isn't visible. The sliding tensioners on the drawstrings are notorious for loosening. Once tightened, tie a quick release slip knot in the string which prevents loosening. The valise straps on the ruck are backwards. The running end should be brought up from the bottom and fed into the buckle at the top. This way, straps can be cinched by pulling them down, toward the user. Easier to strap thermarest on outside of valise instead of between it and the frame. Note the thermarest cover has a row of 'anchor points' like molle straps. Best to pass cargo straps through the loops to prevent thermarest suddenly popping out of the side or shifting position. Many find it easier to secure thermarest under the top flap or securing it longitudinally on outside of main bag via extra straps or bungies. Rations. Must be stripped of unwanted items or those not needed. This will save half the bulk and weight. The OCdt packer was smart enough in the vid to pierce the bag and force the air out of one of the meals that was being stubborn. Stripped rats then can go in the outer pouches.
the valise straps are not too short; they were designed to secure just the valise; not the valise and the thermarest pad. Back in the day, the black betty mattress was packed to a square and stowed in the bottom of the valise. This left plenty of strap to secure the valise.
Everyone there is an a attachment they replace the shoulder straps with(the combat attachment comes with shoulder straps and pouches for ammunition and grenades) the combat attachment.
Individual items should be packed in separate plastic bags, some items can even be vacuum packed. Having crossed many rivers, streams, lakes, lochs and even at sea, i can say 1000% better to waterproof individually. Carry spare plastic bags too. One trash bag is NOT enough. When it comes to water and sand they get in everywhere. The residual air in some bags can also add to buoyancy when doing a river crossing using poncho as raft. Although mostly military I have had to cross water at other times in a non military situation.
Then snap the buckle from over packing the ruck and spend a day trying to get a new pack and putting it together again. Only to be given an even worse pack from supply that is sure to fail even quicker. I don't see the crate of ammo and jerry can they hand you and say put this in your ruck after it's full in this vid. Now picture yourself doing this -50 in a snow drift.
We haven't, I use this exact model, mine was made in 1987 and of today is still being used, just with a lot more duct than I thought possible because our units don't any ruck sacks period. No Gucci ones, no more shit ones like mine, they're all fucked.
Does anyone know of videos for the new rucksack pattern. I believe the sleeping bag stuff goes in the bottom. I'm wondering the ideal set-up for balance and comfort!
Incase you haven't tryed yet if you pack the sleeping bag without the new compression sack I find it actually takes up less space and is that little bit lighter
I can guarantee that this cheap trash bag is not going to keep the gear dry. They should use either a heavy duty 3 mil white garden bag. It’s though, will keep the gear dried and it’s easier to find stuff at night with a red light. Try to find your stuff at night in a black trash bag.
I highly recommend the tarp not be put in with the sleeping bag. If it's raining, your sleeping bag gets wet when you have to open the compression bag to get it.
heavymetalcowboy originalman yeah? you get cell signal almost everywhere, also really useful if your vehicle doesn't have a radio so you can text the packet commander
Most of your ammo would be keep on the LBE and in your field jacket and trousers. According to official manuals online you would not be fighting with your ruck and would not need if for engagements lasting less then 24hrs. Most fire fights would usually be over long before that point.

I'd like to say that he shouldn't be packing his underwear and socks first. He should be packing the stuff he is not gonna use as much to the bottom, to the stuff he is gonna use the most on top. This way, when he changes his cloths daily. It will be much more simple.
I notice he has "cc" on his rank slide and he has a plate, mug, and eating irons, but regular troops don't get issued with them anymore,so you could be right?
who showed these soldiers on how to pack a rucksack? totally wrong. did not tightly roll anything and left a bunch of wasted space unused; did not even ranger role any part of his clothing. ROLE the sleeping bag and not stuff it there! if you roll it correctly you place a set of thermals in their or spare uniform in there. also ground sheet goes with sleeping bag as well as bevy bag. field strip though meal packs! note book in cargo pocket ON YOU. place gloves into coat pocket! field cap if not warn goes into pants pocket! trust he is not hiking very far with that many field rations.. that is the worst rucksack packing I have seen in a training video, it looks like a video you would see in beaver cubs or 1st year boy scouts. thanks for the laugh guys
Lol, yea make sure you dont leave any room for pers ammo, ammo for section and platoon weapons (1 belt c9 per man and .5 belt c6 per man) water, food, NVGs, pyro, or a radio. Noob.

Where's his webing pouches mess tins cooker and so on
fortunately this is not carried on day to day patrol missions.
Cool
He is an Army Cadet, not regular or reserve, hence the ridiculous shit he is packing
+Todd McPherson not sure that he is;don't Canadian Army Cadets wear O.G. uniforms?
That sure is a lot of excess baggage though!
+sapper steve He is Cadet Instructor Cadre, not a cadet. he is technically a member of the CF but all they do is just supervise cadets.
I notice he has "cc" on his rank slide and he has a plate, mug, and eating irons, but regular troops don't get issued with them anymore,so you could be right?
sapper steve it's CIC. I think it's just civvie stuff
+Todd McPherson That couldn't be a cadet because cadets dont have digital uniform. (I know about what I'm talking because I'm one). I think its a CIC
CIC that's why he's packing weird shit. Why do they even get commissioned.
Wait up; where's the beer?
Moose-burger MRE
Poor guy CIC not the best for this demo but a good old grunt would have been better, GO ARMY !!!
Be very carefull you guy's in the middle east. God speed, be well, be tought, be the great Canadian.
who showed these soldiers on how to pack a rucksack? totally wrong. did not tightly roll anything and left a bunch of wasted space unused; did not even ranger role any part of his clothing.
Noob.
Sir i lost my pack sir
God damned ruck sack....
You're all a bunch of muppets.
He's packing his full kit so as to move to a different base of operations NOT packing for an op...can't you all figure that out?
Mike Maslen I imagine some people that are an awful lot more intelligent and qualified than a Mr. Mike Maslen designed the way that rucksacks are packed and the contents necessary
ya 1st time he started putting his crap into the ruck, I knew this. but if they are teaching persons on how to pack a completed pack, this is far from what it is to be
that pack looks horrible to wear lmao, maybe i'm spoiled from more modern packs
Two pair of underwear? No wonder leaf's smell funny.
cheap cheap gear, this is my video of the day. made my day as well
Too much clothing. Whar is he packing for ? Some sort of fashion show ?
overpacked and so much unnecessary stuff. oh god want to see him walking a few miles.
bet you do
I used this video as a reference for when I went to the field the first time... holy fuck did I learn quick
good tip for campers and scouts but i put the bed roll on top use the top cover in the middle now hump that 15 mil in dark in rain
muddy trails you dont know suck tell do that
you are thinking of the old 1964 pattern rucksack. also it depends on person where to put the sleeping bag
