Works! And, while I had a ziplock bag full of used batteries to test, I just happened to have in that bag one dead Duracell Quantum that I could get the test strip off of. It took extreme patience and a gentle hand to get it the battery covering off without ripping it, as it was adhered by glue to the battery. It helped to score the wrapping directly opposite to the test strip so I didn't inadvertently cut near it and had plenty of wrapper to gently peel piece by piece until I was peeling it as a whole. But, it was worth it because I'm finding plenty of still good batteries in that ziplock baggie, that I would have otherwise EVENTUALLY thrown out. I've been saving them over the last year and a half, and go through a lot of batteries with a 10 year old with wireless game controller, and our wireless mice, countless remote controls, etc. etc. This little homemade device is going to save me from buying batteries for a while. Thanks MeZilch. And, it's so great to be able to "You Tube" DIY and find solutions for every day problems and to save resources.
That sounds like a good idea however in normal, quick use you can't even feel the heat. Problems can arise though if the test button gets locked to the "on" position (it happens) as well as attempting to test exposed metal batteries such as the one you stripped naked to get to this tester strip!
You have to be the most inventive prepper out there, and my favorite along with Urban Prepper. I have learned so much from your videos, so thanks for that! Maybe a dumb question here, but do you have a huge stash of Altoids or do you actually use them all to empty a tin? Just curious.
Thanks. My friends and family know I'm into making these kits so when they use up an Altoids tin they save it to give to me the next time they see me. I no longer eat Altoids, BTW; I eat Tic Tacs.
Yes, a non-conductive paper storage sleeve/pocket might be good for people who want to safely store this tester INSIDE their battery compartment. Good idea! . . Also, as I mention in the video's text 5:48 , clear tape can actually be run along both sides over nearly the entite length, not just one side like I show, for added durability and safety. Only the test button area and the tips that touch the battery terminals need to have the exposed metal.
They're actually better than ever because the old ones were a single color but these new ones have a color coded strength meter: red, yellow, and green.
The way tthese testers work is by shortening out the battery and heating up and the indicator is actually a simple heat indicator, so don't use them to much because they will drain your battery.
"A little bit weak, but still good to go." i think that pretty much self discribes p.s. before pealing plastic wrap warm up the bat to soften glue that is holding tester to the shell
Hi MeZillch. Cool video, it was more or less what i was looking for, except i had a small hope that it could be done without something like the test strip. Regardless, cool vid. I have a question though, any battery with a charge indicator strip will work right? Doesnt necessarily have to be the quantum brand?
I have no experience with any other charge indicator strips so I can't really comment, but my guess is it would work? Be advised shorting the plus and minus together on any battery can potentially generate heat and also be dangerous. Proceed at your own risk.
Well my name for it might be a bit misleading. It isn't actually a tactical kit, an EDC kit, nor a survival kit: It is a TOOL kit you might use as a subset to any of those kits.
I love your survival kit that you carry on you at all times the bleach you carry try using shock for swimming pools it's powder very concentrated bleach the ratio I don't know but you had three quarters of a tablespoon to one gallon of water and that makes a gallon of bleach just in case you wanted to know he probably already know that but just want to tell you anyway. Thank you for your videos keep them coming I appreciate you
The point of this mod is it allows you to carry a battery tester on your person every single day because it is small and paper thin, yet practically free. If you don't value those things then this probably isn't a good design for you.

Why to press the dot, when already contact is made 😮by the foil
welcome back, great video
you could also use electrical tape on the bottom tip of the reader & on the extended (aluminum) side to keep from burning your fingers.

A modern day Macgyver. Awesome Mike.
Thanks. I wish I had more time to post but it has been a busy year.

Great video!!!! I am also glad your back. I love your videos! Keep them coming!!
Thanks for clarifying that.
I will be on the lookout for these batteries, very cool video

Missed these videos
if you were to create a "heavy " paper slip-cover you you could make it safer so that it could be packed without the risk of shorting out.

I remember batteries like that ages ago. I didn't know anyone was putting those test strips on batteries again.

Very neat! Glad to see a new video on what I consider to be the coolest channel on RUclips!
Thanks!
Good stuff, as usual. Welcome back.

Yes, good point, they drain power quickly so they should only be used sparingly.
at first i thought the notifacation was a glitch
when i saw you uploaded a new video i was sooooooooooooooo happy
muy buenas ideas,,,,que bien escucharlo otra vez... !
Thanks for making videos again!! I Check almost
Daily!
Great idea bro!!! Post video related to that altoids tin!!.
Welcome back.
Great vid.
Are you from Canada or Quebec? I noticed some French on the battery.
I bought the batteries from a US supermarket but I noticed the French on them also.
Great video as always.
YES YOUR BACK great vid
I was waiting for a new video from you. Cool!
Yes! New video!
Hey! It's been a while. Nice video and idea, thanks.
That's a pity there's no Duracell Quantum here in Brazil... I'll try to find other batteries with the same feature. Great vid! Cheers!
Thanks for this great tip!
Awesome as always.
Awesome, we've had those type of batteries here in Australia since the 90's and now they've been removed from our shelves, maybe due to causing fires.
great video
Love your videos. Yo are very creative
welcome back.....

gianfranco petitti verissimo ;)
still prefer regular way of battery testing
