"FREE" DIY Battery Tester

  • Here's how to make my (nearly) free battery tester for your wallet or mini tool kit out of a dead battery, tape, and some aluminum foil. It's effective yet so small so you can carry it on you every single day. I plan to keep one in of all of my mini EDC tool kits.
    Duracell's FAQ page warns: "Do not dismantle batteries. When a battery is dismantled, contact with the components can be harmful and may cause personal injury or fire", so I don't recommend this device for children. Disconnect immediately after each use and do not use if wet.
    Duracell explains how their Powercheck technology works here: • Video
    Remember to test at room temperature, 70 F/ 21 C, for the most accurate results because this device is actually measuring heat created by the resistive strip under the multi-colored thermo-sensitive crystals. If you can't find these batteries locally you might try BestBuy, Walmart, Amazon or ebay.

    Works! And, while I had a ziplock bag full of used batteries to test, I just happened to have in that bag one dead Duracell Quantum that I could get the test strip off of. It took extreme patience and a gentle hand to get it the battery covering off without ripping it, as it was adhered by glue to the battery. It helped to score the wrapping directly opposite to the test strip so I didn't inadvertently cut near it and had plenty of wrapper to gently peel piece by piece until I was peeling it as a whole. But, it was worth it because I'm finding plenty of still good batteries in that ziplock baggie, that I would have otherwise EVENTUALLY thrown out. I've been saving them over the last year and a half, and go through a lot of batteries with a 10 year old with wireless game controller, and our wireless mice, countless remote controls, etc. etc. This little homemade device is going to save me from buying batteries for a while. Thanks MeZilch. And, it's so great to be able to "You Tube" DIY and find solutions for every day problems and to save resources.

    you could also use electrical tape on the bottom tip of the reader & on the extended (aluminum) side to keep from burning your fingers.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  7 лет назад

      That sounds like a good idea however in normal, quick use you can't even feel the heat. Problems can arise though if the test button gets locked to the "on" position (it happens) as well as attempting to test exposed metal batteries such as the one you stripped naked to get to this tester strip!

    if you were to create a "heavy " paper slip-cover you you could make it safer so that it could be packed without the risk of shorting out.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  7 лет назад

      Yes, a non-conductive paper storage sleeve/pocket might be good for people who want to safely store this tester INSIDE their battery compartment. Good idea! . . Also, as I mention in the video's text 5:48 , clear tape can actually be run along both sides over nearly the entite length, not just one side like I show, for added durability and safety. Only the test button area and the tips that touch the battery terminals need to have the exposed metal.

    The way tthese testers work is by shortening out the battery and heating up and the indicator is actually a simple heat indicator, so don't use them to much because they will drain your battery.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  Год назад

      Yes, good point, they drain power quickly so they should only be used sparingly.

    You have to be the most inventive prepper out there, and my favorite along with Urban Prepper. I have learned so much from your videos, so thanks for that! Maybe a dumb question here, but do you have a huge stash of Altoids or do you actually use them all to empty a tin? Just curious.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks. My friends and family know I'm into making these kits so when they use up an Altoids tin they save it to give to me the next time they see me. I no longer eat Altoids, BTW; I eat Tic Tacs.

    Hi MeZillch. Cool video, it was more or less what i was looking for, except i had a small hope that it could be done without something like the test strip. Regardless, cool vid.
    I have a question though, any battery with a charge indicator strip will work right? Doesnt necessarily have to be the quantum brand?

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  4 года назад

      I have no experience with any other charge indicator strips so I can't really comment, but my guess is it would work? Be advised shorting the plus and minus together on any battery can potentially generate heat and also be dangerous. Proceed at your own risk.

    I love your survival kit that you carry on you at all times the bleach you carry try using shock for swimming pools it's powder very concentrated bleach the ratio I don't know but you had three quarters of a tablespoon to one gallon of water and that makes a gallon of bleach just in case you wanted to know he probably already know that but just want to tell you anyway. Thank you for your videos keep them coming I appreciate you

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  7 лет назад

      Well my name for it might be a bit misleading. It isn't actually a tactical kit, an EDC kit, nor a survival kit: It is a TOOL kit you might use as a subset to any of those kits.

    • @MeZillch

      The point of this mod is it allows you to carry a battery tester on your person every single day because it is small and paper thin, yet practically free. If you don't value those things then this probably isn't a good design for you.
