Great tip on the "death grip" ... I need to learn to relax my guide hand with the bowl gouge for sure... great video, Tomislav with amazing tips for all levels of turners! - Thank you! (and glad the noise from the bearings is gone!)
Thank you for the "over the tool" view. It really helped to see what part of the gouge was doing the work. Thank you for taking the time to explain "less than 90 degrees". I appreciate your patience and detailed explanations.
I am no expert by any means but a small tip I learned the hard way with scraper is to take into consideration how agressive the burr/edge is on the scrapper. I was having a lot of bad catches even when the scrapper was below 90deg only to noticed I had rolled the burr so much it was lumberjack hook and would dig into the wood 😅. Still fogging my shield a little when approaching a scapper to the surface for the first time on a project.
Thank you for this very informative video. You have a real talent for breaking a technique down and explaining it in a way that is very easy for people at all levels to understand. Hope you are getting all the details worked out on your signature line of tools. I also hope that they will be available to the US market 🤠🇨🇱
Dear Tomislav, after listening to this excellent demonstration I believe that you should be called a « refiner » in teaching. Thanks for sharing your skills
Your comments on cherry are of interest to me as that is what I mostly have in the form of prepared blanks to practice on. My current projects are 18” crotch figure bowls and the cores that came out of them. Your teachings were very helpful on getting good results with these. Especially the teachings on burr formation.
Excellent video Tomislav. That was very helpful. The detail you provided made everything very clear. That bit about very light touch is a critical piece of information for anyone starting to turn. That avoids so many problems.
I can't say that scraping causes me problems, but your instructed so much more theory I think it will be even smoother for me. So many instructors tell you what and how. The why is what allows you to apply the knowledge in any circumstance. Thank you for the theory. Scraping a bit above center was new to me. I'm looking forward to the scraping of the yellow heart, in my chuck and ready to go, tomorrow.
I just finished a olive bowl this afternoon and I used my scraper for the bottom and it worked great, but I wish I had seen your video first. I had a lot of the technique right, but you always show me some new things which would have made it easier.
I don’t suffer with the death grip but when I am doing turning that requires delicate touch I stop breathing……😅 Another good video Tomislav, thank you.
Thank you very much, I have sorted yesterday bussiness side of things, which took longer then expected as I can't make it faster unfourtually, but now in matter of days I should have everything up and running.... I'll announs it very soon, thank you very much for your interest
Another excellent video Tomi, thank you. I have also heard Richard talk about a very delicate touch. Is there any chance you and Richard will get together one day for a video? That would be the all time best thing on RUclips. Also, can I make a request? I have seen various people talk about how they price their work. Often going on a size of the bowl calculation. I can't see how this works as, for example, a live edge burr with a wide rim and some beads etc. may take many times longer to make than a plain bowl of the same size from a piece of free cutting plain wood. Does the wood itself make a difference to final price? A piece of spalted Plum usually being more desirable than, say, a plain piece of Sapele. A video on that subject would be very interesting.

Another great video Tomislav. I'm curious about what angle is on your scrapers. I started out at 15 degrees and then 20 but it looks like yours are steeper than that and they work well. Of course that may be because you are a much more experienced turner than me. Thanks, Larry
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thanks Tomislav. I actually found that video before I read your reply and wondered if it was a response to my question. Much appreciated!
Pozdrav Tomislav, Kaki Si. A beautiful little bowl and a great tutorial, when you get around to selling your refiner will it come with the little nick you grind on it on the left edge?
Thank you very much Those who will want to order will be able to choose either factory edge, sharpen with grinder burr, or pulled burr with burnisher. And also if someone wants the nick for getting into corners
Tom, when you're making wood bowls from Oak or any wood of the same grain kind and it's a dry wood, what is the minimum thickness of the bowl walls that is save to do without chance of crack or break during turning?
Well depends on size but I rarely on super dry wood like this go less then 5mm,mostly because of the thin sound. But otherwise there is no general rule if thickness
It can but there should be a reason for your cathes, there should't be catches, try watching some of my videos from TEHNIQUES playlist, perhaps it will point out where you make mistakes with gouges
Thank you very much, I have sorted yesterday bussiness side of things, which took longer then expected as I can't make it faster unfourtually, but now in matter of days I should have everything up and running.... I'll announs it very soon
Yes, for me they are more efficient as I don't have to sharpen them nearly as often , to me I just don't see the need for negative rake scraper.... I have only one, Steve Jones grind and I use it only to round square smaller stuff. But that doesn't mean they don't work, they are just another way of smoothing the surface and we all prefere something different.☺️
Thank you for your instructions! Well done and very informational! What is the size of your scraper? It looks a bit thicker than 6mm, which i use. To prevent this rougher grain at 40:00 i change the direction while sandiing in the lower grit.
Ofcourse, I would turn forward and reverse a few times during sanding, especially if there is a raised grain like im this case. This is what I call bowl scraper, ita 25x10mm, 1inch wide by 3/8 thick
One of, if not the best instructional video I’ve seen! You have a great ability to break a process down and explain all aspects. I hope you get everything worked out with production of your own tools and that they will be available to the US market 🤠🇨🇱
Wonderful! Thank you Tomaslav. in my 73 years you are the king of RUclips.

Thank you
To all the new turners watching, this is excellent teaching of solid bowl turning technique. Well done sir. Always a joy to watch
Thank you very much sir
Thank you Tomislav for confirming that going slow with a scraper is better than fast with a gouge. Your the best teacher i watch!
Thank you, most of the time,if you slow down feeding rate either with gouge or scraper you will get slighty better surface

That is true and that is why I suggest when someone is starting out to use the burr straight from grinder, its much less grabby

Excellent tutorial Tomislav, thank you 👍
Quick question, which model of drill do you use? I'm looking to get a right angle drill for sanding 😉
Thank you sir
I believe Makita only makes two models now, with cord like I use, I have one with fast change head
Thanks so much for the great info. What angle is the relief on your scraper?
I try to sharpen close to 45

Do you work with any hard woods. I'm in Australia and a beginner.
All of these woods are hardwoods,I rarely use softwood like pine or poplar.
Will this technique work with end grain turning?
Yes it will

Did I hear you say you was using a spindle gouge? And no I am not complaining glad to seeing am not the only one
Yes, You sir are not alone😄
