Genesys entered my life a year ago and now it’s basically my go to system! After years of lurking, something suddenly clicked. I love Universal toolkits; Genesys has a traditional feel that makes it easy to run with classicists and a narrative feel that makes it a huge deal for storytellers.
It has even an edge over other toolkits I might like more: you can let those player type live together and the game won’t break. In FATE, my gamer changer, you really need a full group buy in, or it just doesn’t work… In Genesys, you can have a player merging Talents and skills for the perfect alter ego and a narrative gamer developing motivations and skills, with a few social talents… You can do it all.
And more: I love the idea that, provided they are quite helpful, you don’t really need any table. Roll the dice, interpret it and set what next. I love how the way you read results can set the tone as well.
I’m GMing a modern horror/thriller, gonna play Keyforge soon and planning some Terrinoth afterwards. I did a one shot using the Genesys Resident Evil porting and some adventuring in Katrthun; it just works. XD

I literally have everything ever published for Genesys. I fell in love with the system. But sadly I never played. I even considered sellinga the Star Wars books. Theorically I love the system- but I got hooked on Dungeon World, Symbaroum, Cortex Prime and Cypher, and just never came back to it. I knew it’s still being published. My LGS just got a restock of Star Wars just a month ago.
It was great to come across your video.

    Genesys is back!
Following the release of the amazing Twilight Imperium setting book, genesys dice are now on preorder and supplemental materials for each of their settings are in the works.
The transition from FFG to Edge took a while because Edge was merely an RPG translation company before. With COVID and the blocking of the suez canal also adding delays. But now that Embers of the Imperium is finally out of manufacturing/shipping hell, Genesys is back and just as alive as ever.

It is the best rpg that we have played. I have introduced it to the students at school (High School). There are around 12 students that play daily and we have done so for around 5 years now. The narrative dice system encourages creativity and the students love purchasing / upgrading skills and talents. Over time, we have made a huge amount of themed talents for bards, assassins, monks and necromancers. It is quite incredible what they have come up with. The main issue that we have is that here in Australia, we just can't get items anymore like dice! So many young people would love to take this game up, but we just can't get it here.

I've played and enjoyed a few one-shots with the Genesys system: a hellboy game, a kind of Hogwarts game but you are playing familiars of the wizards and a Star Wars one shot. In a few weeks we are going to start with a Warhammer 40k Dark Heresy campaign. something I'm really looking forward to. And I GM'd the Legend of the Five Rings starter set 2 times.
The system is a lot of fun. It is very flexible beeing just a generic game mechanism to whom you have to provide a setting and adjust the ruleset - but that is either in pre-made settings like StarWars, L5R or Twilight Imperium (yes, there will be an RPG for the board game) or you can create your own setting. There are options shown for different settings like fantasy, scifi etc.
Playing was a lot of fun. As you already mentioned the dice results are more than succeed / fail: Positive stuff happening at the same time, negative stuff or triumph / drastical negative events ("you shoot at your target but hit an explosive device, filling the whole room with hot flames and reducing the breathable air").
Regarding the current status of Genesys: as you mentioned Edge Studios is a new studio related to FFG and it is all about the RPGs. Currently you can't get any genesys dice (at least here in Europe), so my guess is, that due to the pandemic the dice are somewhere between China and their destinations. The pdf's should be available. But don't quote me on that.
    Have fun gaming. 🙂

As I understand it, Genesys reprints had issues due to Covid, same with the Star Wars game. And they are just now sorting those things out. They are about to release (seen pictures of the book surfacing) a "new" setting for Genesys Embers of the Imperium, similar to Realms of Terrinoth it is based on one of Fantasy Flight Games board games, Twilight Imperium.
I have played it and I am currently running a fantasy campaign in our own setting. It is a really good system for telling stories, it might seem complex at first but it is rather easy ones you get the basics down. The hardest thing for players seem to be what they can accomplish with advantages or threats.

I agree a tough barrier to get into it but very fun when in it. I think any generic setting role playing game is harder to character Create - learn the mechanics. The popularity of 5e is the simplicity to get players into it. 5e is very hard on a dungeon master to balance every single encounter. Genesis, however, is basically a system all about game master tools. It’s also all about customization so when a player says, can I player… You just say yes and tweak something. Genesis is perfectly modular for tweaking things. And the best part is that the counters do not have to be balanced. So when you take a unexpected left, turn, the GM can quickly throw down something appropriate and not have to worry about the nitty-gritty of finally tuned balance. There’s also no fudging of dice.

  • @martinbowman1993
    @martinbowman1993 Год назад +1

The thing with narrative dice is you have:
boost/set back - which is luck
    Ability/difficulty - this is about a characteristic
Proficiency/ Challenge - this is about skill
When you roll a dice pool and the only success left is from a boost dice - success comes from luck
When you roll a dice pool and the success comes from an ability dice then the narrative is formed around an ability
When the only success is from a proficiency dice then the story comes from effective use of a skill.
This is what separates the dice system from a target number system and also it is separate from a gimmick dice set to milk you for money.

However that period is over they just released a new book called twilight imperium and they're coming out with another book for that setting an adventure so I'm hoping to see more books more support but this is a system that has a big fan base but it's literal held up by the fans.

FFG had their RPG department then Asmodee (parent company) closed it out of the blue. things were in limbo for a little while until it was announced that Edge Studio was taking over the RPG department and that some of the staff that were laid off were rehired under edge. then covid hit and cause numerous delays with getting new prints of the books and combination of reworking the star wars license with Lucasfilm that caused a huge number of delays on that. They are slowly getting back to producing stuff and getting the reprints out for existing products, the dice becoming available again finally (for Genesys) but the bad thing is because of all of the delays people started moving on to other systems that seemed like it was being actively supported.
There are those of us that love the narrative dice system and you really have all you need to play using it (when you can actually get a hold of books that is in print), otherwise you have to get the PDF's.

I love the system, it allows for so many different play styles and doesn't have as much power creep as systems like D&D IMO. The open-eneded magic and talents can be overwhelming for many people I found though. We found that either magic magic something you unlock parts of it works, or just basically having a spell list you mostly stick to. The talents in things like terrinoth are good but without a set progression it can be daunting for many so the GM may need to help players 'level up' a bit more or create skill trees for them.

I've only played the Star Wars game which is basically the same system. And it is probably in my top 2 or 3 systems, especially to GM. I could even go so far as to say it's probably my favourite to run. I just wish that Genesys had more dedicated books for each genre, and more World Books/Campaign Settings.
I'd love to see a dedicated Pirate setting, and a Western. They could even have a range of options available for GM's to tweak how much magic, monsters, and "weirdness" is in the world, from extremely low/no fantasy, all the way to high fantasy.
But yeah, that's really the only thing stopping me from going all in on Genesys (that, and they need to put out a bunch of "Monster Manuals", for a range of different Settings).

Genesys and the other games that run off the system are definitely still around. The company just released a new book for the system recently that hasn't made it to the US yet. (I am thinking Edge is not based in the US). The issue atm is that when the games changed hands from Fantasy Flight to this company Edge (which I am guessing is a much smaller company) they have been slow to get things rolling. Books and especially dice are very hard to find atm because the company isn't printing atm, or at least that's the sense I get from correspondence.

IIRC right before 2020 the parent company did some reorganizing after the head of Fantasy Flight Games left. This left some stuff in limbo for a while (most notably the RPG branch of FFG); eventually the RPG lines got transferred over to EDGE after presumably negotiations over the Star Wars RPG license, which FFG acquired before being acquired by Asmodee, with the final products released being the Keyforge source book and Expanded Players Guide. While corporate was figuring out and legal stuff it seems like the RPG staff pushed out some other stuff, which is why you have the L5R and Midnight games for D&D 5e. Dice is still in short supply as of writing this comment, the current head manager at EDGE is saying it'll be coming "hopefully soon" as their manufacturing (for both books and dice) was in chaos during much of the last couple years as they switched manufacturing and printing from China to the EU.

Genesys is an amazing game and, as far I am concerned, the perfect game. Most "modern" games still miss the mark in skill resolution by 50% (except maybe 2d20), and most games that have made it to a 4th or 5th edition are still bogged down in their high combat, low RP, binary skill/combat resolution roots (though they have made small strides). If dynamic RP is your thing, Genesys should be your go-to. I yet to find a game this dynamic (though 2d20 gets close). Its the only game I run and, likely, the only game I will play.

    Thanks for this video!
I've been looking for years in search of a "good" system regarding to my expectations, I was first struck by warhammer 3e with its narrative dice system (NDS), then I found Star Wars RPG by FFG, and there were fantasy adaptations from this one which I started playing with (Sky Wars: Edge of the Kingdom). Finally FFG released Genesys and I was so happy.
I'm in France, to my knowledge Edge Studio is based in France and there is another studio in Spain. Covid has delayed many printings, but finally Genesys in french has arrived in France stores something like 6 months ago.
This is my favorite system by far because of its story first paradigm, and because it is not designed firstly as a combat simulator (even if very good combats are possible). It is efficient and hides a lot of mathematics, I think it is elegant, and can be used by non-geek people as well as geek people. I also like the toolbox approach.
I'm pleased to hear of people loving this system.
Here are a few resources with fan made settings:
    ffg-forum-archive.entropicdreams.com/topic/303120-genesys-master-resource-list-revamped/
There are valuable PDFs in Drivethrough too, in the Genesys Foundry: the www.drivethrurpg.com/cc/27/genesys-foundry
I would like to see more books and more complete settings.
I'm about to write my own fantasy setting, somewhat inspired by The Dark Eye universe (Aventuria).

The fact that you need specials dices for this set of rule is a big no for me. I already possess Savage Worlds ( that is the best generic system) , BRP ( for more OSR classic gaming) and Gurps... So it is sad but except if someone that I know own that game... There is sooo many good generic games nowadays that's it is hard to pick just one..

Have a love hate with it. If I'm playing Star Wars it's my go to. But outside of Star Wars I'd rather play other games. Primarily my love hate comes down to the die system. It's just all over the place and can be really swingy. I like that they provide narrative, but then at the same time they also provide charts for what the results mean which has caused a good divide in a few groups I've played this with. Others are fully on board with the narrative and some are hardcore that if there is a chart the results must adhere to the chart. Also the fail factor seems to be really high for starting characters, or maybe we just have bad luck, but it just feels unbalancing. As you get better it also just ads more dice which doesn't really improve your odds just increases the spread of results. So this has been largely relegated to playing Star Wars for us and that's it.
To play other settings I'll either pull out Fate if I want a more narrative game or more recently I've been really drawn to Cypher System. It still handles good narrative play but also has more meat on the bones for the system in general and unlike Fate and their very broad setting books Cypher settings are well produced, more strongly designed and perhaps even more useful have pre-written adventures.

    Genesys is great.
But...the magic system as written is a bit too open eneded for most tables. I would recomend using it for non magical settings.
Terranoth is fine. Its pretty generic and that book has a lot of fluff without a lot of mechanics. Would have liked tonsee a more generic fantasy supplement with more crunch.

Still playing? It's pretty much the only thing I'm interested in playing. Level-based, D20 task resolution mechanics games are boring. They're for lazy players, and D&D has become a wargame where you only control one unit. Which is exactly how it started out.

@@RevKev I hope you get a chance. I'm GMing for a setting I created that's a blend of sci-fi, cyberpunk, and Cowboy Bebop. My players seem to be enjoying it (they haven't advocated for moving on to a different game and system yet, at least).
The hardest part, I think, is getting D&D players to change their mindset. They have to actually put in some work, it's not just "I rolled a 22", "You failed", and "I gained a level, I get 2 skill points, a feat, and I roll a d8/10/whatever and gain that many HP".
I love this system. It's not perfect, and there's a lot of wiggle room, but if I want a simulationist level of realism I'll play Twilight: 2013 or a computer game. If I want a tabletop wargame I'll play Battletech or one of those WW2 games or something in that vein.
      Good luck!
