  • Bamberg is a town in northern Bavaria, Germany, laid out over 7 hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. Its old town preserves structures from the 11th to 19th centuries including the muraled Altes Rathaus (town hall), which occupies an island in the Regnitz reached by arched bridges. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, features 4 towers and numerous stone carvings.

The famous smoked beer from Bamberg may not be everybodys taste but I personally like it.
Bamberg is a very beautiful town in the northern part of the German state of Bavaria.
The dress of the reataurant staff you saw is a bavarian style but there may be some similarities to Czech or bohemian traditional clothing styles.

1:30 A Franconian Schäufele - the grilled shoulder "shovel" of a pig.
3:20 Weißwurst is not really Franconian, but from Munich. It is made from uncured veal with some bacon and some herbs. Because it contains no pickling salt and no nitrites. it turns white while pre-boiled. It is mostly served within the water it was warmed in and together with sweet Bavarian mustard (the brown dip beside it) and a Brezel. It is a traditional staple for the second breakfast around 10 am.
    6:51 Leberknödel-Suppe = liver dumpling soup.
7:08 Apfelstrudel (apple strudel, Strudel meant originally something like swirl or whirlpool); it comes originally from Austria and is mostly be served warm with some whipped cream and some icecream at the side.

Don't forget to mention that a Weißwurst breakfast is incomplete without a beer. It's a vital part of the experience. And don't worry, there's a big variety of non-alcoholic beers available.

Actually that part of the Czech Republic you noted is Bohemia and was very German (after WWII the German people were expelled). The Trachten dress (Dirndl) the waitress is wearing is from Bavaria. It's of German origin not Czech.

Parts of Bamberg's old town hall are over 500 years old. According to legend, it was built in the middle of the river because the Bishop of Bamberg did not want to provide land to the residents. The German Red Cross was founded here in 1921.
Fun fact: Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock spent the first 12 years of her childhood mainly in Nuremberg (Nürnberg). That's why she has such a charming Franconian dialect when she speaks German.

Do you remember the comment from Rachel of DW in the video about Meet the Germans Road trip, South... that there is some area "in Bavaria" where you should avoid calling people Bavarians? Here you are, in Franconia, with cities such as Nuremberg, or here, Bamberg. (Including the white sausages that can be found in Franconia, but they are a totally Bavarian thing and not so common at all in Franconia, especially compared to Bratwurst). 🙃

Yeah, and most of all, don't call a Franconian a Suebian, or vice versa, by mistake. Happened to me once and I had to listen to a lengthy lecture about dialects, geography, and history. In Franconian, of course. I'm Bavarian.

Bamberg is historically not so small. It was the seat of a Prince-Bishop and is also known as the Franconian Rome because of its seven churches atop the seven hills of the old town. Nearby Nuremberg was once a central city of the Holy Roman Empire, geographically (for the part of the Empire north of the Alps) as well as politically (the Imperial insignia were stored at the Imperial castle in Nuremberg). Nearby Würzburg was first the capital of the duchy of Franconia and became after the dissolution of that duchy (and after Emperor Frederick Barbarossa had been married to his second wife, Beatrix of Burgundy, by the bishop of Würzburg) also an Prince-Bishopric. (The region around Nuremberg became Protestant after Reformation except for the parts ruled by the both prince-bishoprics). Those Franconian regions were given to Bavaria by Napoleon.

Mainly, the Allies bombed towns that were important to the war machine, so steel industry, coal and weapons manufacturing. But they also did what was called the "Baedeker Blitz", where they targeted towns with a rich history and that people loved. Dresden.... well. We started the atrocities and barbary then reigned superior. That Bamberg escaped that fate is a major miracle. History is painful and ugly at times, but if it isn't, you're not actually studying history.
