How I retired at 38 to live in Bali - 5 Money Concepts that helped me get there faster

- It took only 4 years of dedicated investing and financial planning to get to my target retirement passive income amount (modest as the target was, but I did start with only a small amount of savings to work off). This is my story of how a decade or so of living simply within my means (generally leading a minimalistic needs-based life) and 4 years of actual action allowed me & my husband to retire a year ago at age 38 and move to Bali to live the best versions of our lives whilst we are still young, active and healthy to enjoy all the activities we truly love.
Timeline: I'd quit my Big Law corporate job before i turned 30. It took me about 4 or so years of wandering around Asia to build up a new set of livelihood skills, learn about different ways of life and philosophies and to crystallize that my own life goal was not the pursuit of wealth per se, but the pursuit of a simple but comfortable life built around activities that was meaningful to me. From that point, the goal of reaching a state where i could comfortably live & do what i wanted in a place i loved, Bali, without having to work a 9-5 or run a business was born. 4 years of dedicated planning and investment action later, we actually actualised our dream and we've been happily living in Bali ever since.
Sharing our story and the 5 money concepts that sped up our journey to FIRE here in the hopes that if your own life goals are similar, then know that it's possible and it could potentially happen in just a number of years.
We all deserve to have a chance at living our best life whilst we're here!

Most people don’t realise it, but the secret to retiring comfortably is finding a way to make returns while your money works for you. My dad, as I remember, started saving for retirement quite late, but I know he was making more than 10k returns from his investment monthly and it was completely passive.
This is really amazing though. I'm curious as to how he did it. Was it real estate? Or he was a market enthusiast?
Not really. Approximately four years before to my dad's retirement, our family was introduced to a financial advisor. That was the catalyst for the transformation. I believe my retirement income would be on the right track because I've been using the same advisor.
I'm intrigued by this. I've searched for financial advisors online but it's kind of hard to get in touch with one. Okay if I ask you for a recommendation?
I'm hesitant to make recommendations like this online so I can't drop her contact here, but you could look her up yourself and contact her if you wish. Her name is Sharon Lynne Hart.
This is amazing. I have great admiration for people who retire early.
*I'm 50 years old and living in Germany Berlin🇩🇪 I'm willing to retire at 55 if things keep going the way I planned bought my first house last week I'm glad I made a productive decision that has changed my life forever can't be more proud that I'm right now*

Sorry for late response I was able to do this because I understand four pricinciples of financial planning success think long term with goals and investing, spend less than you earn maintain liquidity (an emergency savings) minimize the use of debt and with the help of financial advisor Ava Brenda Harry I made over $120k in crypto

This is my fifth year after retirement. I’e been following the 4% rule thing I saw on a youTube channel, but this isn’t really how hard I expected things to be. After I cashed out a lump sum, I still have about $760k left, but at this rate, and with how the market is (we were putting money away in an index fund), I’m starting to get really worried.
Not a lot of people are able to save that much in a lifetime. But now you are retired and depend on your investment, it’s best you redistribute your capital. To simplify the process, you could allocate your resources with the help of a financial advisor.
I’m closing in on retirement, too, and I have benefitted so much from using a financial advisor. I didn’t start early, so I knew the compound interest of index fund investing would not work for me. Funny how I pulled in more profit than some of my peers who had been investing for many years.
I really need help, please. Can I ask who the financial advisor you work with is?
Carol Vivian Constable is the licensed fiduciary I use. Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment..
She appears to be well-educated and well-read. I ran a Google search for her name and came across her website; thank you for sharing.
I didn't become financially independent until I was in my late 30's, and I'm still in my 30's. In addition to having purchased my second home and earning money on a monthly basis through passive income, I've also achieved three out of five goals. I just hope this inspires someone to realize that it doesn't matter if you don't have any of these things yet, you can start today no matter your age. Change your future by investing! I made a rather big decision by investing in the financial market.
I agree with you and I believe that the secret to financial stability is having the right investment ideas to enable you earn more money, I don’t know who agrees with me but either way I recommend either real estate or bitcoin and stocks.
I keep wondering how people earn money in financial markets, i tried trading on my own made a huge loss and now I'm scared of investing more.

A minimalist lifestyle is key, and probably sans kids. Most people I know (myself included) have big cars, big houses, big families and big debts. And it’s a never ending treadmill leading to a heart attack.
I think sans kids is the biggest thing here. You can cut off cars, houses, luxury, etc- but if you have a child/children, you will want to give them the best things you can, including education.
ILOVE PEOPLE GIVING ADVICE WITHOUT HAVING LIKE 2-3 KIDS TO RAISE LOL
And also having good health helps.

Thank you. Just what I needed to watch. My hubby and I are directors of our farm business and own property, plus small pensions. I am nearly 52, hubby is 55. We have started to save to retire from the farm, and possibly live on rental income, I'd really appreciate you go LIVE and talk about how to earn passive income online and retire comfortably, let’s say $1M.

I totally agree, I'm 60 and newly retired with about 1.2 million outside retirement funds, no debt, and very small dollars in retirement funds compared to my portfolio balance over the past 3 years till date. tbh, the role of the invt-advisor can only be overlooked, not denied. just have to do your research in finding a reputable one.
Certainly, there are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’AILEEN GERTRUDE TIPPY” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.
If you have 1 million, you can put your money into a high-yield savings account (5%) and live off the interest in a cheaper country like Bali or Thailand (forever).
I lived in Singapore for 15 years and I realised that its not the place for me to start a family, living simply and retire. I'm Indonesian, don't retire in Bali. Don't buy the lies from these influencers. Even I don't want to retire in Bali 😂 I'd rather have millions and travel to Bali during my retirement but never retire there.

Hi Jean, I wish I had heard this lesson 20 or 30 years ago. I’ve spent my whole adult life caught in the rat race. I admire your courage as a couple to make these life changes. Here in Canada we are taught and encouraged to live to work, a process installed by big businesses many years ago. People like Tim Ferris and Robert Kiyosaki have helped to let a new generation understand there is another way. I give thier books to young people I think will be receptive to such a change. Thank you for sharing your experience, tips and concepts. Please keep it up. One related lesson I’ve learned is to find a partner who shares this desire for a different lifestyle and getting out of the rat race.

Hello Steve, I am glad to hear your stories. I'm currently applying for a student visa from IRCC, which hopefully can help me get a PR afterward. On the other hand, I am also worried about the high living expenses in Vancouver, BC - trying to rent or buy an apartment, working in a company to get local work experience to be eligible for citizenship(I am an entrepreneur and have run my own business for 8 years ), and all that kinds of things. After reading your comments, I realize that why would I put myself into that rat race?! I am still happy to go to Canada to attend school because it will help scale up my business, but I think I will not care about PR as much as I used to. Thank you for your sharing!
Hi Steve, thank you for your kind note and that personal sharing. I completely agree. With the right partner, we become something greater than just two people put together - that idea of 1+1 becoming more than 2 I guess haha. That’s my experience w V, I’ve been very blessed in that regard. Think you prob have one too! Canada is a wonderful place to live if one is financially comfortable there, I hope you enjoy your life outside the rat race there!

At age of 22 I was earning almost 3 times what my dad was earning, still living at home and my Dad caught sight of one of my payslips one day. Eeek! First he demanded I pay rent to my mum ( ha ha!! ) and he also made me speak with his Co-Op insurance guy. My Dad made me sign up for pensions and savings on the spot, they barely made a dent into my money at the time so I didn't notice the money missing each month. Ten years later when my daughter was born we were able to build her the nursery my wife and I wanted, I bought a new car ( and driving lessons at age 34! ) and quit my job for 3 months to be with my wife to learn how to be parents, all on those simple savings that had grown. The original pension is long frozen but it was a lesson and was replaced with a bigger and better one that I've been paying my own money into at 10% for 17 years, that with my work pension at 15%, the mortgage paid off 2 years ago and debts almost sorted and I'm still 10-15 years from retirement. My Dad kicked my arse about money and he's still going strong at 82 and whie hes not a rich man he makes his money and small pensions he has work for him. He wasn't a financial whizz, he just had a serious knack for good common sense!

If you want to increase your net worth, investing in the stock market is an excellent way to make that dream a reality. The stock market isn’t just a get-rich-quick scheme; it can be a way to build sustainable wealth.
However, it is possible to lose (rather than gain) wealth through the stock market. It’s essential to have a strategy in place and to invest in suitable securities at the right time.
How so? I’m a beginner with close to no knowledge of how to go about it.

"Most big, deeply satisfying accomplishments in life take at least five years to achieve. This can include building a business, cultivating a loving relationship, writing a book, getting in the best shape of your life, raising a family, and more. Five years is a long time. It is much slower than most of us would like. If you accept the reality of slow progress, you have every reason to take action today. If you resist the reality of slow progress, five years from now you'll simply be five years older and still looking for a shortcut." - James Clear

It's been almost a decade of a non-9-5 life now. I'm never turning back i can safely say.
@@JeanVoronkova True, my FIRE story helped me discover what genuinely drives me personally. The main takeaway from my 4 years in early retirement was that you do not actually retire. You got to work either way, sometimes even more. Moreover, the allure of your interest that drove you to early retirement can fade away once it becomes your new job.
I also discovered that you do not need to quit your job to be creative or do something fulfilling. An overall positive attitude is what is needed no matter what you are doing and opportunities come your way. Alternately, you do not become automatically happy once you retire early. Good and bad days are part of your life...you cannot eliminate them.
Last but not least - never say never :)
It seems that many want to retire without working before retirement 😂😂😂. Studying until mid 30 and retiring with 38 is nice but what is going on when you are 70 years old? Life is easy and beautiful when you're young but when you pass the 60 you have still 30 years of life ahead and it can be long without money. Look how many westerners are moving to SEA because they can't afford to live in their home country.
Jean this is such a great video ! Thank you so much for sharing your journey to get to where you are.
Found your channel while watching a channel my granddaughter likes….Your voice is so calming and I can feel the peace that you have. I’m 52 and really trying to find mine. ❤🙏🏽 Best in health.
This video is extremely relatable on many levels. Thank you for inspiring us to chase our dreams ❤
thanks for the kind note, i'm glad the video msg resonated with you :)
You are not retired you are a digital nomad.
If retired at 38 and all I do is travel and go from place to place. After 5 or so years of travelling, I would want something new to do. Something that gives meaning to life. That's probably just me though
For a former corporate lawyer, I'm sure that feels like retirement
yup. And need a a career to actually retire from. Quitting your job isn't retirement.
And you are nothing Jack Goodman. Quit hating on people and let them call themselves what they want.
Thanks for all the invaluable takeaways! I'm learning a lot from your awesome videos! ❤
A reminder I needed. Everything doesn't need to happen right now. Patience and release.
Yep, definitely, it’ll all happen when it’s the right time!
Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?
as most investing-related questions, the answer is, it depends.. my best suggestion is to consider advisory management
Agreed, the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around 300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.
this is huge! mind if I look up the advisr that guides you please? only invest in my 401k through my employer for now, but enthused about diversifying my investments for a prosperous financial future
'Vivian Carol Gioia' is the licensed advisor I use. Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.
I just looked her up on the web and I would say she really has an impressive background in investing. I will write her an email shortly.
jean! this video came to me at the perfect time. i like my industry (data science) but i want to do it freelance while living in vietnam, not in a rigid and bureaucratic corporate setting. hearing your transition from big law to freelance has inspired me.
hey! I'm glad you have that take away from my videos! that's wonderful! Dare to dream. Seriously I had so much pain struggling to exist outside of my legal training and work experience but i carved a new path for myself eventually luckily. And no regrets leaving that corporate environment yeah. Vietnam's wonderful we lived there for many years (me 8 V 12) - you'll love it i'm sure. All the best
First time viewer here, I appreciate your simple and common sense logic, combined with a very soothing and calm voice, have a great day.
Hi Jean 👋 great video! You have such a great understanding of life, everything you said I fully agree with so it was so refreshing to here your journey. Thanks for sharing ❤
Great Video, Success is dependent on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Show me a man who doesn't have an investment, and i will tell you how soon he will go broke. Investment is building a safe heaven for the future. With the right choice of Investment that has at least 1% minimum risk and with an expert guidance, profit and Intrest is 100% guaranteed.
I agree with you. I had a senior colleague at work who was living well but never had an Investment, unfortunately his work was terminated,so he went from living well to surviving with his family. If he had invested when he was still working, he would have had another source of income.
Investing is a prior decision to make for the future. If you are seeing this and don't have an investment, please do make plans to invest so you don't end up like my senior colleague at work.
This made so much sense, just like he said " for one to invest, the person have to consider an appropriate choice of Investment with at least one percent minimum risk , profits margin, a mentor and expertise to guide and help you manage your Investment portfolio.
With the help of Angelina Morris who works with an Investment organisation in England, I have been investing in the Foreign exchange market, Stock, and dividends with her expertise and guidance, she has helped me make huge profit on my Investment portfolio.
@@halasultan6439 Oh its great to see someone who also benefit's from the services of Angelina Morris indeed it's a small world. She is my portfolio manager and mentor too for 2 years and still counting and I have made profit of 123,795 usd from my initial amount of 5100 usd with her managing my portfolio.
investing requires good experience and knowledge to carry out a good and successful trade, I have lost a lot trying to trade all by myself May I ask which investments are good??>>>>>>>
Considering that I am only three years away from retirement, it becomes challenging for me to solely concentrate on the long-term perspective. Despite having invested in reputable companies and having a significant amount of funds allocated, my profits have been stagnant. This situation raises the question: Does the current recession and unstable market offer any calculated risk opportunities for generating profits?
I understand your concerns, my friend. I recommend exploring passive index fund investing and expanding your knowledge in this area. Personally, I experienced both successes and challenges when initially seeking a reliable passive income......,
how do I get in touch with this consultant that assist??>>>>
STEPHANIE KOPP MEEKS, that's whom i work with look her
Thanks for these recommendations.....,,,
Thank you sooooooo much. This video changed my thinking for ever.
Thank you for this. It was so empowering.
Another well structured and executed video Jean. It was great to learn more about Vitaly and you as well. Nicely done! ✨🌱🌞
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks for sharing this, Jean! I’m currently in the exploration phase, trying to figure out what I truly want out of life! It is really hard to separate our own identities and values from others’ and society’s expectations! Unlike you, I haven’t arrived at the answer yet, but your story really inspired me to continue re-evaluating everything I choose to do with my time.
Well i'm also just figuring it out as i go along, i'm just further down the road than you are cos started earlier lah! The world really is our oyster... we just need the confidence to go shape it to what we need it to be. Good luck!
Hello Jean..good to see you.
Be happy and enjoy your life! Take care and stay safe 🙏
Omg how in the world you figure it out so early. This is so wonderful. I love it. I will definitely share this to my young men sons. They are also successful young engineers and I wish them to live a fulfilled lives and hopefully they one day meet that perfect partners with the same visions. Thank you.
I like this ladies personality I can tell she’s a good person ❤️
thank you Darian! that's kind
minimalist lifestyle compounds, awesome! and not a get rich quick mindset, really like it! keep up the good work 🙂
thank you! getting rich quick seems to be a thing percolating through the millenial generation now esp w the rise of crypto awareness..... recent Luna drama caused a lot of heartpain to many of these people i believe...
You are hope for me. Thankyou for posting this video
Thank you! you gave me real food to think about how i live my days now. thanks!
Jean, once again you've hit the nail on the head with your spiritual yet practical insight on how to live a TRUE quality of life. Real freedom is the ability to have choice, as the universe lives within us with infinite possibilities. Simplicity is truly luxury, and having the passive income to make better life choices is true wealth!
Very strong statement "the universe lives within us with infinite possibilities"
i love this comment from you, thank you so much for sharing. Couldn't agree more with every bit of it. True wealth is the ability to choose free from fear and money influences.
Spiritual?…just advice about doing a job you enjoy. This is common sense, nothing in the least bit spiritual about it!
Thanks for sharing your story Jean. My wife and I have been in the s&p500, both through my TSP and through Fidelity in her 401k. Until 3 years ago, we were 100% in the s&p for over 12 years. Cashed in $300k from the S&P and invested with a full service CFA. We currently have $1.2million in out tax deferred savings, no children. I retired last year at 49 and my wife will retire next year. I can say we're doing just fine.
This is cool. I was wondering if investing in a cumulative ETF during this next decade is a sound investment. Or is it better to invest in a distributing ETF (even considering taxes)?
@@George-hl7jf My funds are pretty much diversified. You should probably try algorithmic trading; copy the gurus, more so one with experience of the past bear markets. I copy a chartered financial analyst Josephine Guevara Laporte. Been quite consistent. My portfolio returned approximately 21% in the last quarter.
Hi I'm already in retirement and have like $700,000 in a CD account with a very low interest. I only need $30,000 for liquidity purposes(emergency fund) and plan on growing the bulk to over a million. I found Josephine Laporte's official website after looking up her name. Quite impressed at her portfolio and I want to schedule a call with her. What's the fee structure?
@@theexpendables3152 Since it's an algo trading based model, it's very much transparent because you can actually see what assets you have and how much growth your portfolio has achieved. Josephine takes 10% of only the profits, no hidden fees.
@@profderek8111 A 10% of profit is fair. I've just dropped a message from the website. I find it better to pay a little bit more for peace of mind than worry about market trends and still get burned. Thank you.
Jean this video is truly inspiring, thank you so much!
1:19 Thank you for sharing your beautiful journey in Vietnam with us 💕 I’m so proud that our country is a choosen place for so many foreigners to immigrate & retire early, especially in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Con Dao.. those beach areas. Namaste.

Most people venture into crypto to be millionaires, meanwhile i just want to be debt free
That's very practical and smart goal, a wise man once said do everything you can to get outta debt, one of his tips to getting rich
When you invest in crypto you are buying days you don't need to work
Now is the best time to purchase and invest in bitcoin, stop procastinating.
Crypto currency will outsmart the banking system in the nearest future serving as a global fiat. Already making over 85% profit from my investment.
Wish I knew about crypto trading earlier. Brace up and get yourself a bitcoin before it's too late.
Geeeez your a keeper! Congrats on everything you two have achieved!
Awesome, Thanks Jean
Wow you are so brave 👍🏼 and you are absolutely not wrong about your decision.
I’m Indonesian/Java and I love Bali too.
thanks! its not for everyone of course, many ppl think its too slow n boring haha, but i love my own choices!
@@JeanVoronkova I’m quite surprise with your decision normally in Asian culture the parents are very very proud if the children are had a good courier like yourself as a lawyer, but as you said everyone is different as long as you are happy 🙏🏽 but hey with your talent you’re easily get a job in Jakarta 👍🏼 you are a smart girl!👍🏼
Love your videos Jean, you have really worked through a lot to get to where you are now, it’s really inspiring and I look forward to learning more about your journey as it unfolds. All the best!

Hi Jean, we are from same country. I really admire your simple and purely happy life. Has retired financially independent and moving towards your path.
What an inspiring story! Have a nice life Jean! Good luck!!
Thank you for speaking up about alt choices in life
I look ard and see ppl living n walking down a pre planned life or so call good life
And they dun seems to think there are other routes in life
Hope more people can see this msg u are trying to convey
thanks Song, u really are a kindred spirit. Its ok if they are happy in that pre planned life. SG govt is damn good at pre planning our lifes for us hey hahaha.... but the sad thing is if they are actually not happy and feel stuck but fear moving out of the mainstream.
luvely said and I luve the way you talk and express the points. luvelyyy and nizooooooo
Thank u 🌻🤓
Thank you. Your video made me feel good again about my plan to move to Asia. And I love listening to you talk. Your voice is so soothing. All the best to you. :)

Beautifully put together!
Delayed gratification is key to reaching your financial goals early! Thanks for sharing your story Jean.
Jean, thank you so much for this video. I need to bookmark it so that I can watch it everyday. The information you share is something that we as hamsters on the wheel need to hear everyday. Thank you again. See you next Saturday.
Thank you Sean, I’m really glad that my sharing made a difference and helps you. It’s all a bit personal n we’re pretty private so it took me a long time to make this video, but now I’m happy I did!
Sooooo good Jean! What a great breakdown! Loved this. I've been seeing your videos popup on youtube here in bali and it was awesome to hear your story. I am 36 and right behind you I think! Katrin is 28 and is basically going to make both of us look like we weren't even trying haha.
haha thanks Timcophoto! I'm glad the video resonated with you guys :)
Wow!! You give me hope!! Thanks !!
Fantastic. I only recently retired at age 65. I did what I loved so I kept at it. I still "work" at my convenience and I get to do other stuff that I love doing. Glad you are happy.

Thank you for telling your story. I found it interesting. As far as education on how the rest of us can do it, I find it doesn't work when you say just work great paying jobs and do things smart. That's easier said than done. If you're smart enough to think of something that makes you money, that doesn't mean the person next to you can. That's where the rest of us suffer and why we can't do what you do.
