The most important moment in this movie is when Phil turns to her and says: "I know you think I'm a jerk. It's okay. I am." That instant of self-knowledge is what it's all about. Then, what he does about it.

I remember researching more deeply into this film, although that was several years ago. If I remember correctly, in the original script outline, Phil spent something like 10,000 years worth of experienced time, looping through the limbo of Groundhog Day (about 3.65 million days). In that time, he learnt French, French romantic poetry, ice sculpting, playing the piano (and possibly other musical instruments) and he taught himself as much medical knowledge as he could through reading medical texts and journals (up to Doctor levels of knowledge). He must also have read every book in that towns library, if not every book in the whole town - and probably several times over.
[from Quora - Danny Rubin, who conceived the “Groundhog Day” story and wrote the original screenplay, specifically stated in the scripted dialogue that Phil Connors had been trapped in the time-loop for a staggering 10,000 years. Rubin’s story was one of unimaginable, unending mental torture, like going to Hell for eternity.
Harold Ramis thought Danny Rubin’s screenplay was too dark and depressing, so Ramis and Rubin edited and rewrote it and transformed it into a legitimate comedy; and it was in the editing process that they decided to leave the actual duration of the time-loop a mystery.]
As you can tell, this is one of my favourite films. 🙂

Punxsutawny, PA is a real town and they do have a Groundhog Day celebration every year... but the movie was filmed in Woodstock, IL. The interiors of the hotel where Phil stayed is actually the Woodstock Opera House. It overlooks the town square. The park in the middle with the gazebo is the setting for "Gobbler's Knob".
The festival emcee "Buster", whom he later saves from choking, is Bill Murray's brother Brian.
The actor who plays the neurologist is the co-writer and director of the film Harold Ramis.
The actor who played the man in the hotel hallway was also Santa in Home Alone.
Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, Chris Elliott (Larry the camera man) and Robin Duke (Doris the waitress) were all cast members of Saturday Night Live at different times.
Chris Elliot and Brian-Doyle Murray starred together in US sitcom Get A Life (1990-92)

I think it's really well-structured and the filmmakers wisely decided not to get *too* detailed with why he was cursed, how long he actually spent, etc. It's not about those little details- it's about the journey of Phil from self-absorbed to self-aware to completely selfless. Just a really wonderful film.

People have calculated drom the clips and have estemated he was in the timeloop for 30 years (the director said he was thinking more like 70years).

There's a horror movie with the same time loop idea. Happy Death Day. It's not as heart warming, but it is very entertaining.

Great reaction Emma, it's sad that they hardly make any romantic comedies anymore, "Overboard" is another one worth checking out. 🙂💝

Nice reaction to a great movie...Now if you want to see Andie McDowell (Rita) in another really good movie that no one is reacting to...check out "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994), lots of laughs and fun, except for the funeral, of course.

Not only do we not know exactly how long Phil Connors was stuck in Groundhog day, but we also do not know why he was stuck there in the first place. Maybe God was just having some fun.

Due to vague criteria on what constitutes an early spring, the groundhog's accuracy is somewhere around 40% correct in predicting the weather. (36% to 47% range from various sources). Still Phil is wrong more than he is correct.
The mayor is Bill Murray's brother. The 4 brother (of 5) all appeared in the movie Scrooged. That's worth a watch. (Christmas movie).
Some estimates have Phil Commers stuck in the time loop for 33 years and 350 days. There were many popular answers... (Apparently, there were some people with too much time on their hands...).

Emma, you bring up an interesting point. You do reactions that other people want you to do. The question I have is, what film do you want to react to just because you want to? Perhaps you can throw in a personal choice every once in a while because it was a lot of fun watching you react to this! Keep smiling!
