  • First Thought Talks 2023: In the Fires of Rebellion and War
A century ago, Ireland was reborn in the fires of rebellion and war. The playwright Sean O’Casey bore witness to these seismic events and dramatised them as the Dublin Trilogy, three great works of Irish theatre, full of history, humanity and humour - The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock. 100 years later, Garry Hynes has woven O’Casey’s three plays into an epic Druid theatrical event of conflict, national identity and the human toll of war.
To discuss these plays and incredible production Garry is joined in conversation by journalist and author Fintan O’Toole.
First Thought Talks are presented in association with University of Galway.

Saw the Trilogy in the Abbey last week (in the august presence of Uachtarain na hEireann!). Contrary to the musings of all the luvvies, these productions are really not very good. Some cast members were simply not up to the job, dragging the whole performances down with them. Shadow of a Gunman worked on some levels, but the other two can only be described as failures.
