Dear Gary, Thank you for such a wonderful education.I'm 63 and love to garden, thought haven't done much over the past years.I We live in the TX Hill Country. Until listening to your program I was quite the compost maker and user. When I get back to TX I'm going to make a very strong effort to change all potted plants to similar mixes you've introduced me to.
    Thank you,
    Eric

Gary's explanation is the voice of reason. Listen and learn. I wish I'd heard this many years back ...

Same here. I would’ve saved ~$1,000 on soil if I knew this 3 years ago on my raised bed and other areas my soil started compressing and had to rebuy.

I was thrilled to find that Lincoln Avenue Nursery in Pasadena now carries Gary's Top Pot and Acid Mix! I randomly drove by, decided to stop, and found it on the shelf. I asked, and they had only had it for about a month after a customer had asked for it every single week. I purchased every bag they had for a new collection of house plants.

Thank you for sharing this truth !
This should be required viewing for all Nursery people, Master Gardeners, etc.
In my experience, Nursery owners are very short-sighted and creatures of habit to a fault. Dare I observe that they are often very under-educated. They see the lower cost of a cheap, bulk soil mix, and they like the fact that it weighs less than a true soil consisting of sand, silt, clay, and bioactive components.
They sell the plants. Trusting customers pop the plants right into clay-sand. Those roots become waterlogged, anaerobic (no oxygen) and diseased since the fake soil is essentially a sponge surrounded by a sand barrier.
The customers may return, but the problem is *never* addressed. It's like fools leading fools; just terrible for the environment, too.
For this industry, this issue is a tragic, completely avoidable elephant in the room. We have to continue spreading this truth.

Hi Gary I'm from the Caribbean just wanted to find out if it's good to grow avocado in potting mix and gimmits? Gimmits is little pieces of coral that washed up on the beach the size of a pencil eraser.

Do you think a 50/50 mix of sand and peat moss is a good potting soil for trees like mango and avocado?

    • @GarysBestGardening
      @GarysBestGardening  5 лет назад +3

That could work, it may be more beneficial if you add something like Pumice as well, but the Peat and Sand should work.

@@GarysBestGardening would equal parts sand peat and vermiculite work?

Gary, are you referring to Durling or Clausen regarding the 75% redwood sawdust 25% sand?

Any kind of sand? Like the sand from the beach or builders sand or the sand they give you during a hurricane season? Wintering because of the salt. Tia

If I go down to a building supply like micoys or other I’m sure they won’t know what sandy loam is. It always happens to me. :(. South Texas
