Hey everyone and thank you for joining me as I watch the 2004 movie Whiplash.
Andrew enrols in a music conservatory to become a drummer. But he is mentored by Terence Fletcher, whose unconventional training methods push him beyond the boundaries of reason and sensibility.

Andy Serkis was just outstanding as the drumsticks! What a physically demanding role that must have been for him!

This one of those movies that I have zero interest in the actual subject but it's just so damn good that it ended up being a favorite. The Iron Claw is another. Couldn't care less about wrestling but the entire movie is just so well done it pulls you right in.

Whiplash is the perfect title as that is what Nieman and the viewer experience repeatedly throughout the film. By the way, J.K. Simmons earned a bachelor's degree in conducting in college, something the director didn't know until after Simmons was cast. J.K. also won an Oscar for his performance.

Was he dedicated or obsessed? At what cost is it worth finding the next Charlie Parker? Is it worth Sean Casey's life? The look of approval Fletcher gives Nieman and Nieman's look of pride in getting that approval makes the ending. But what of the sadness you see from Nieman's father? It's like he realizes he has lost his son to Fletcher.

That ending was so amazing. You hardly get movies that end at the climax.

Is anxiety + exhilaration one emotion that has a word? That's what this movie did to me. Loved your reaction - looked like you felt the same.

It's a very sly ending because you want Andrew to "win" with a big successful finish but you also want Fletcher to be accountable to his basically criminal levels of abuses of his students. Like do we want champs or do we want justice? Why can't we have both? This is such a great movie from that and many other perspectives. Aside from all that, the music is absolutely great, and the cinematography, editing and direction is top-tier. I kind of love/hate this film, what a weird state.

"There are no two words in the English language more harmful than: good job"
I slightly disagree. I would add "unearned" in between "two words" in that sentence and that would be my philosophy.
Fun Fact: The film was shot in 19 days.
Awards And Accolades Fact: J.K. Simmons has won a total of 47 awards for his role as Fletcher.
Drummer Boy Fact: Miles Teller, who has played the drums since he was 15, received blisters on his hands due to the vigorous, unconventional style of jazz drumming. Some of his blood was on the drumsticks and the drum set as a result. During the more intense practice scenes, the director wouldn't yell "cut!" so that Miles Teller would keep drumming until he exhausted himself.
Landing Blows Fact: For the slapping scene, J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller filmed several takes with Simmons only miming the slap. For the final take, Simmons and Teller decided to film the scene with a real and genuine slap. This is the take that is in the film. J.K. Simmons suffered two cracked ribs when Miles Teller tackled him during the last two days of shooting. Simmons managed to continue working despite his injury.

Another brilliant movie that came out the same year, that you should check out, is Birdman by Alejandro Inarritu. It beat Whiplash for Best Picture. One of my favorites of all time.

Lovin this movie. As a drummer i get both sides. and i learned early on to use tennis grips on my sticks as well as wear bandaids or baseball gloves. Really cuts down on the blisters and if ya slam your finger on a tom rim or stice it on a cymbal. and it gets the heart pumpin. its a great sport. And such an amazing Ending. wowzers
