Hello, I have seen your video many times but I still am not so sure of which one of the screws I need to tight. The problem with my shutter is that (when set in one second) doesn't open entirely. It does open perfectly when set in Bulb. Thanks for sharing.
Hi man, I really want to thank you for this video, you saved me! The shutter curtain of my M4-2 was stuck (I couldn't even see where the f*** it was) and I didn't know what to do until I saw this jewel. I only pushed down a bit the "closing curtain pick up roller" with the screwdriver and voilà, the curtain was back :D :D :D I couldn't rotate it counter clock wise though (that's a good thing I suppose) also no problem with shutter speeds. I think my M4-2 needs a CLA. Thanks again mate!
Hi! Looks like I might be having a similar problem with my M3 - it got stuck after I made a shot and not it won't rewind or let me press the shutter. The curtain is closed, but the edge is slightly visible on the viewfinder side. Was it similar in your case and how was the camera after you pushed down the closing curtain take-up roller?
A Leica shutter that sticks in this way needs cleaning and lubricating. It is sticking on the blind break which is binding. Do not tension the blinds without lubricating first. A correctly cleaned and lubricated shutter will not need re tensioning unless it has been tampered with in this way. Adjusting the blinds in this way will through out all the fast speeds.
Great job! I was wondering if you can do another video showing how to adjust specific timing for each shutter speeds. My m3 does not properly close from 1/250 and above. Thanks for the help!
Use a paste paint thinner and brush it on the old vulcanite. You may need to repeat a few times and clean up with alcohol. The paint thinner will remove vulcanite, rubber cemment, and paint, so cover the black screws or remove them as well as the back door before you start. Also, be super careful when removing the vulcanite from the back door as you will strip off the black paint. Good luck.
Hello. I own a Leica M3 but it seems to have a defect. The shutter is opened when the camera is cocked (!) and it seems to constantly be in bulb mode. Any ideas?
My shutter seems to have come loose after winding, and will not fire now. I think there may be a piece of film stuck in there somehow, as my last roll had some tears in it. Would doing this help my issues you think?
Hey! Impressive job with your Leica videos. Your pretty brave to open them up. I was wondering how you got the metal under the vulcanite clean. I will be replacing some old vulcanite soon. Thanks for your comment on my m3 m4 overview.
Please people... this is a load of crab! The guy hasn't got a clue! First clean and lubricate!! Than you will find that the spring tension isn't that far off... Leica did use high quality materials... never touch spring tension unless you really have to... this video is insane!
This tutorial is completely useless. You cannot adjust the shutter spring tension simply by checking the slow speeds. If you do so, you will end up with not properly working high speeds. It is extremely important, that both curtains have EXACTLY the same increase in speed, otherwise you´ll get at least uneven exposure @ 1/500 and 1/1000 sec or even at lower speeds. To adjust the shutter propperly, you need to measure the correct shutter speed at different spots inside the film-frame and adjust both curtains. If you do not have the needed analyzer, better have it done by a pro and do not touch the adjustment screws...
If you are not a Leica mechanic and you undertake jobs like this at the very best you are NOT adding to the value of your M3. At the worst you are turning it into a paperweight.

my M2 doesnt close at 1/4, 1/2 and 1 sec. will this work? most of other shutter times are ok. will it affect the others?

what about the rust?
John: Tthe top Leica technician in the United States, Sherry Krauter, states that the M3 requires nine (9) different types of oil. You knew that, yes?
Very Good!
