Yes. There’s a lot of sly class commentary in here lol. As far as I can tell, it does *not* endorse disenfranchising women, but it does show how sometimes the wealthier women can campaign for all this almost like a fad, when the poorer women are too busy working and caring for their children and home. I’d also always missed Mary’s comment about job references being old fashioned. 😂 But yes, the bird lady is “invisible” to many. Mr. Banks doesn’t see it from her perspective, and how she needs to make a living, just wondering why anyone would care about birds.

Fun Fact: "Feed the Birds" was the first song written for the movie, and it was Walt Disney's favorite song. He had Richard Sherman play it for him every week. He said, "Yep...that's what it's all about, isn't it?" He got the deeper message of the song: it doesn't take much to do a good or kind thing - tuppence worth, two pennys worth - so do it whenever you have the chance. Feed the birds=Do a good deed.

The only real tearjerker scene for me is when Mr. Banks walks to the bank at night. He knows the lady with the birds is always there, but when he looks at the steps to the Cathedral, she's nowhere to be seen, nor are the birds. It leaves me sad to this day, because we don't know what has happened her. Other than that, I always watch the movie with a smile on my face.

The scenes with actors and animated characters was filmed with sodium vapor process.
Disney made one sodium vapor camera.
At the time of its use, the sodium process yielded cleaner results than did bluescreen, which was subject to noticeable color spill (a blue tint around the edges of the matte). The increased accuracy allowed for the compositing of materials with finer detail, such as hair or Mary Poppins' veiled hat.

So I'm watching Mary Poppins as I write this and something just occurred to me during the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious song. Burt says he first heard the word was when he was young child but the only person who would have told him that word is Mary Poppins. So I can only deduce that Mary Poppins was Bert's nanny and that's how they know each other.

One thing I really like about this movie is that it never vilifies the parents for their pursuits. The mother isn’t a bad mom because she’s a suffragette, she’s a bad mother because she cares more about what history will remember about her accomplishments than her own children, and Mr. Banks isn’t a bad father for being ambitious and a hard worker, he’s a bad father because he cares more about carving his niche in the edifice of time than he does spending time with his kids. The movie never says that them having careers or political leanings is bad, they’re just showing that their kids need lots of attention that they aren’t receiving.

Another great Disney Musical from this era to watch is Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (the father) from this film.
A few fun facts for this film:
    1. The women who wait outside to apply for the nanny position are actually men because they couldn’t find enough ugly women.
    2. In the animation sequence people like the songwriters, Julie Andrews and multiple others do voices and David Tomlinson voiced Mary Poppins Parrot umbrella at the end.
    3. The choreographers Marx Beraux and Dee Dee Wood would go on to do the choreography for many other classic musicals including: The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Slipper and the Rose,
    4. The woman who played the Bird Woman is legendary Actress Jane Darwell who starred in over 100 films and at the time she had been retired, but Walt Disney convinced her to be in the film and personally sent a car to pick her up everyday and treated her like Royalty.
    5. Besides being Bert in the film Dick Van Dyke as Mr Dawes Sr when he would be dressed up in all that makeup he would troll the backlot tours by making them think it was an old man and cross in front of them as slowly as possible then right as they were about to pull away he would sprint off as quickly as possible!
    6. Julie Andrews was hoping to be in the film version of My Fair Lady which she started on broadway, but Warner Brothers wanted someone who was actually a star as Julie had not been in a film yet so they went with Audrey Hepburn. However the story doesn’t end there as Julie Andrews was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy opposite Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady and she won and in her acceptance speech she ended it with “Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and made this all possible in the first place Mr Jack Warner.” and everyone lost it including Mr Warner. Then at the Academy Awards this film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won for:
    Best Actress,
Best Song for Chim Chim Cheree,
    Best Original Score,
    Best Visual Effects,
and Best Film Editing. It was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Scoring Treatment, and Sound unfortunately losing many of those to My Fair Lady.
Edit: Yes Ed Wynn (Uncle Albert) was the Mad Hatter Walt always wanted to have him in something he appeared in several other Disney films including: The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Babes in Toyland.
Edit 2: When they were in the early development stages of the film Walt gave his songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman a copy of the book to read of what they thought would be good material for the film and they underlined six chapters in red crayon and when they went in to see Walt they handed him the book and he chuckled because in his copy of the book he had underlined the exact same six chapters in red crayon as well.
The inspiration for the song “A Spoonful of Sugar came with Richard Sherman’s son came home from school and he asked what had happened to learn he had been given the polio vaccine to which his dad asked if it hurt and he explained no they put the medicine on a sugar cube on a spoon and we swallowed it. A literal spoonful of sugar helped the medicine go down.
When the brothers were playing songs for Walt one day a couple hours they thought would work for the film at the end he asked them to play that bird woman song again to which Walt walked over to the window saying “That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?” Referring to the theme of the film. It was Walt’s favorite song the studio ever made and every Friday Walt would meet with the brother and just talk about things going on at the studio and other projects and at the end of their meeting he would always ask them to play the song by saying “Play it” and when they finished it he would send them off saying “Have a good weekend boys.”
Even after Walt’s death Richard Sherman would still go into Walt’s office on a Friday afternoon and play the song and on what would have been Walt’s 100th Birthday he went the celebration when the dedication of the Partners statue was unveiled and played the song saying it was only for Walt at the end of the song he blew a kiss to the statue said Happy Birthday and walked off, but he was told later on that when he was nearing the end of the song out of the clear blue sky a single bird came down near the piano and off back into the sky.
    Edit 3:
All of Mary Poppins was filmed indoors.
The old woman that children encountered when they run away from the bank is the actress who voiced Cruella De Vil in “101 Dalmatians”.

Same! She was such an inspiration to me growing up too. And I wsrched her movies many a time when I was sick or bored. When I was little I would sit on buses and sing songs from classic musicals like Mary Poppins, Sound of Music or Wizard of Oz for the whole bus. Julie Andrews is probably my all-time favourite singer. She very much inspired me to take up singing lessons.
I'm a soprano too, so I will burst into songs from Mary Poppins and Sound of Music all the time. Particularly 'Feed the Birds' which is such a beautiful song.
I got to see Julie Andrews for a talk where she discussed her career and told us personal anecdotes of her life. Honestly, as beautiful and wonderful in person as on film. She was warm and kind and wickedly funny. Had the whole audience laughing their heads off. I just about wanted to beg her to adopt me as her granddaughter.
One of the highlights of my life was at the end the whole audience sang Edelweiss for Julie. She'd lost her voice by then due an operation gone wrong in the 90s so she couldn't sing for us which was clearly very upsetting for her. So the host asked if we would sing it for her. All the hundreds of people in the audience stood up and we sang the song together. It was in the most beautiful old theatre so it was magical. And Julie Andrews teared up and was so touched. It was really special.

The whistle for the Robin was actually provided by Julie herself. In the movie ‘Saving Mr Banks’ the story of how Disney made Mary Poppins it was revealed that the main focus on the story wasn’t the children but their father and how he needs his family as much as they need him. In fact ‘Feed the Birds’ was Disney’s favourite song and regularly asked the Sherman brothers to play it when they were at the studio.

Feed the Birds is the BEST message ever just as she says "the smallest of things can be quite important" its true
Step in Time took 6 weeks to get right and everyone loves Dick Van Dyke for his dancing but HE'S NEVER HAD A DANCING LESSON IN HIS LIFE he just moves his body to the music his role in this is the epitome of living a happy life doing what u like and liking what u do he bounces around to whatever "job" he wants whether it actually pays money or not sometimes just being happy is a form of money
The effects were way ahead of their time so was the whole movie itself

Always related to Bert more than any other fictional character. Sure, he's covered in filth, and has arguably the worst job, he's poor, but yet he laughes and smiles, he does everything in his power to bring joy to others. When Mr. Dawes Jr. takes out and opens the umbrella, one of the bankers stands up and utters out, "No, not that!" She does have an amazing voice. I don’t know if you know who this is but the lady playing Mary Poppins is Julie Andrews and she also did the sound of music after Mary Poppins and she was on Broadway for a few years unfortunately in 1997 she had her voice tragically taken away from her because the doctors went into operate, thinking she had vocal nodules and then turned it up turned out later there wasn’t anything really wrong. She was just tired from working too much and at that point it was too late because they bought drip so bad she couldn’t sing at all like her, beautiful voice was basically gone through no fall of her own.

Agree with you, this is a movie Everyone should see at least once. Funny watching you try to and finally pronouncing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Julie Andrews is an incredible talent performing and singing many times on broadway as well.

Loved your reaction to this movie and glad you enjoyed it! I grew up watching Mary Poppins, which made the movie “Saving Mr. Banks” even more interesting because you learn a lot about the movie’s history and struggles.

Yu kinda cut her off, but that old lady character was played by Voice Actress who voiced "Cruella Deville" in 101 dalmations. She also narrated begining of Cinderella.

This is my first time to your channel, and I love the look of wonder on your face. It reminds me of when I saw it when it first came out.
When Mrs. Banks sings the line 'Mrs. Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!', she's referring to Emmaline Pankhurst, one of the most important figures in the Suffragette movement. She, and many of her followers, were often jailed for their activities, most of which wouldn't have resulted in jail sentences of a man had done them. They endured severe punishments, including force-feeding for hunger strikers.
Admiral Boom fires the cannon twice a day as a time-keeping measure for the neighborhood. That's why the people in the Banks household (and, presumably, the other neighbors) know when to grab fragile items that would be broken otherwise.
For upper middle-class families in the Edwardian era, it was very common to be somewhat detached from one's children. Mr. Banks wasn't necessarily a fool. He was a product of his time.
    Fun Facts:
Many of the nannies who get blown away are actually men.
The background musicians in 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' are known as 'Pearlies', Cockneys who use pearl buttons to make elaborate designs on their clothes. Cockneys are people who are born within the sound of Bow Bells (the church of St. Mary-le=Bow) in London. They have a very distinctive way of speaking. Bert's accent is supposed to be Cockney, though Dick van Dyke wasn't very good at it.
Ed Wynn was known as 'The Perfect Fool', which his son Keenan Wynn didn't appreciate. It wasn't until after his father's death that Keenan realized the soubriquet referred to Ed's consummate skill as a comedic performer. Among other roles, Ed was in the Disney film 'That Darn Cat'.
David Tomlinson (Mr. Banks) also provided the voice of the parrot umbrella at the end.

I loved this movie growing up and this past spring my school did a production of it! I had to learn to tap, we had Mary and Bert fly, we added little tricks like Mary fixing a collapsed table without touching it! ugh I wish I could do it again!

Yes, indeed. Mary Poppins is a great singer. Julie Andrews was known for having one of the most beautiful singing voices of any stage and screen actress. It was a great tragedy when she had a botched vocal cord surgery that deprived her voice of much of its range and sweetness.

Knows Ed Wynn from "Alice In Wonderland" but just catching on to who Julie Andrews is. That's unusual. And apparently didn't connect Dawes Sr. to Dick Van Dyke. By the way, what's with the "Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins" graphic? This is the Disney film, which predates the stage musical by decades and has nothing whatever to do with Cameron Mackintosh.

Something few people notice in the rooftop scene, you really have to look at it to notice that there is stuff moving in the background. It's not just a static backdrop. Today that would be no problem, but back then?
Turns out that scene had 5 to 7 (I don't remember exactly how many there where) layers to it. Yes, they filmed 5-7 layers and put them on top of each other. Just for the rooftop scene.

Song of the South was before this, and Jerry Mouse (of Tom and Jerry fame) danced with Gene Kelly in a film. I don’t know if The Incredible Mr. Limpet, with Don Knotts, was before or after this. Betty Boop and Koko the Clown interacted with their animator in the ‘30s and Porky Pig had a short that mixed live action with animation. Animation/Live Action has a very interesting history.

Disney had pioneered the mixing of animation and live-action with his *Alice in Cartoonland* shorts during the silent movie era. Donald Duck appeared in a combined animated and live-action sequence with latin singer Aurora Miranda in *The Three Caballeros* (1944). *Anchors Aweigh,* the film in which Gene Kelly danced with Jerry the mouse of Tom & Jerry, was released in 1945. *Song of the South* came out in 1946. Another sequence combining Gene Kelly's live-action dancing with animation was included in *Invitation to a Dance* (1956). *The Incredible Mr. Limpet* was released the same year as *Mary Poppins* (1964).
