The game really felt as though there was a Civil War among the writers and developers and not writers versus developers more like some writers and developers versus the other half of writers and developers.
Part one feels like a traditional fire emblem and balance Around that. But then you have a big lipped alligator moment that is part 2 And an even bigger one when the 1st half Of part 3. Is that by the time you're given control back of the Dawn Brigade, Feels like someone didn't tell the guy who is making the levels these specific chapters you're being given back a group of Characters who are still at the stats they were at the end of that chapter but you're fighting enemies who are balanced around say Ike's group. In a swamp level with fog of war! I was like what the h*** were they thinking. And the worst thing is There are just so many better characters that the only reason you would bring any dawn brigade Other than the 2 protagonists of the story (Sothe and Micaiah) It's simply because you decide to say f*** it you like them enough to keep using them but they do not have enough character development after part one for you'd even cared too much and the support which is supposed to make up for that is bare bones that it doesn't make up for it. Because a lot of players playing radiant dawn are likely going to be returning path of radiance players Who likely have old save bonuses so basically anyone who was in the 1st game Are gonna be so much better than anybody exclusively new to this one. In the end you have a s*** ton of filler characters who really didn't do their job as filler characters they just existed because they had a mention about them like Meg And even then that's more of a blink and you might miss because it relies heavily upon you having supported Zihark and Brom Do you have any idea of who she might be, I mean once part 2 comes around you'll make a lucky guess of who her father is if radiant dawn was your 1st game and not path of radiance basically you started playing on Radiant dawn and never played path of radiance.
And then some characters really get shafted like Tormod Whose path of radiance bonuses does not save him. There's a reason why you didn't see this type of format ever used again in fire emblem. Story wise it's interesting gameplay wise it's freakin annoying and redundant and the support system which had pretty good writing And made up the back story for the characters who are not the main characters in the story and even enrich the characters who were the main characters in this story Got shafted all because they wanted to put as many fillers and so you would not be without a full army and then you get to the tower of guidance at the end and realize you're gonna cut that number even lower especially since they're gonna give you the royals who pretty much Kick a** and you have to actually choose not to use Which unlike another fire emblem's sorry Bud you have to take many of them so now the numbers further cut..
I enjoyed radiant dawn but it's one of the fire emblems I would least replay The other one being genealogy of the holy war. Blasphemy yes but it takes a lot out of me 3 houses gets replayed Only because new game plus gets rid of much of the tedium As some of the bonuses that I allow myself to use without breaking the game means I have less busy work so I can enjoy the f****** game. There's a bit of a reason why I like traditional fire emblems like fates and engage. It's nice to play those like 3 houses but not so often. And I really really want to play power radiance which is also a traditional fire emblem but radiant dawn as I said never again. Play the 5 times and refuse to do so again. And hated how you had to do many times just to get one secret character that you can only use in the final map I have to ask why did they regulate the "Gotoh" that is Sephrian/Lehran To such stupid requirements just have a chance of using him in the final Battle when hes kind of redundant. Because you know you're replaying the game after certain point so he really doesn't add anything. At least the Gotoh of FE6 Blazing Sword/GBA Athos Join you for both halves of the final battle.

@@paulman34340 I dunno, it did not feel like that, it felt like that was intentional and was intended to make it more of a challenge. They were thinking that the Dawn Bridage levels should be really tough. I mean they are not all better, some are still useable and viable despite everything, they do have enough character development after part one or you to care enough about them and the supports are not all bare bones and it does make up for it at times. Not everyone actually. They are not filler characters and they did their actual jobs well, no they are fully actual characters for the most part.
They did not all get shafted and they are not filler characters.
Actually he is not reduntant as he has some use. Wrong he does add something as he is a useful unit.

@@Jdudec367 Let me be clear, I do "NOT" hate Part 2, frankly speaking it was my favorite chapter STORY WISE as a Path of Radiance fan because I got to see Elincia growth as a Queen (She's honestly my favorite Nyna in the series likely cause I think she's the ONLY playable Nyna in the series! Playable as in "story given" rather then unlocked by completing the game for the challenge modes)
Part 3 can cause a split because you have the Greil Mercenaries (who even without their POR Bonus stats have great base stats) vs the Dawn Brigade (Who you better HOPE got lucky RNG wise with Stat growths and you training them properly! Found I only needed Laura, Aran, Micaiah, Sothe, Nolan, Leo and Edward and no one else! But damn will I despise the chapter you get them back in! It's like how Cecila in Binding Blade joins you....on a DESERT MAP THAT SEVERLY CRIPPLES HER MOVEMENT WISE AND MAKES HER EASY PREY FOR WYVERN HELL! Well at least the Fog of war map is manageable compared to that hell (though the irony half that map was reused in Blazing Sword and it's where you get Pent was just cruel as being an unmounted Sage in a Desert made him run RINGS around the bosses of that level is not lost on me! Poor Girl) Lets just say we know who's going to win in popularity (even if you DIDN'T play POR to have an Ike Bias, you know their are FE players who choose their characters based largely on their Base stats cause there's less work to do in making them viable then take a chance on a potential dud! Not that I ever know! Other then one time with Dimitri in 3H and even that was recoverable! I never got RNG Screwed, or felt like I did in a FE game because I know how to adjust! Have played where I used the Dawn Brigade from start to End any chance the game let me)
Part 4 though REALLY shows the game was Narritive before Gameplay with the "let's split up gang" to wrap up plot points and threads on the way (If you found a way to use the Fire Sage Kid without POR Bonus or whatever! Power to you! Only used him once and Late Comers are not very appealing to me without the Stats to prove it! Will Say Engage RESTORED some fate in late comers as they CAN be worked around to be useful despite their join time. GOTOH runs strong with Veyle LOL! But fuck Oliver! Never was a fan of him in POR as I ALWAYS saw him as a villain! But did love him for the Meme status he has garned like Gheb from Sacred Stones! He SURPASSES him! Gameplaywise I already have like TWO Saints that are better and Micaiah who is a Upgraded LORD Saint who is mandatory as the Main Character, so I have no need for more then one other Saint choice) which as I'll remind, storywise it's alright, gameplaywise, I'm using alot of characters who won't make the final line up (because IS for SOME GOD DAMN REASON decided to SEVERLY lower your final line up for ALOT of characters who are needed storywise! No making them just be with the group and you could choose to deploy them, YOU HAVE to deploy them, lowering who you can FREELY choose! Note they never did this again in future FE! The only mandatory Deploy's was the Lord of the game and the Avatar, and then just the Avatar til 3H for obvious reasons! But you never felt FORCED to use some characters! I HATE when I'm gimped of who I can use when you give me a shit ton of characters)
But hey that's MY View and Opinion of Radiant Dawn! I will admit after playing it like 40 times over the Wii Lifespan (as I searched in vein for POR again, I regret trading it in after beating it once, assuming I'd buy it back later) I have little desire to play it again despite liking Micaiah (Especially as Heroes and Engage REINVOGRATED what I loved about her) over Path of Radiance (But that may be as I said, because of my regret selling the game after beating it all those years ago! I was young and foolish and I did this with Blazing Sword & Sacred Stones before! Sold them while they were new and got them back after I had time to cool down later cheaper then their original price! Didn't know about limited print back then! CURSE YOU NINTENDO!) But I will say it was a great finale to the Tellius and Ike's Story (Even if it had a crappy Support Conversation system! At least Paired endings are there....even if limited)

I love most of the tales games I have played. A funny thing I had with Berseria was Velvet... I almost feel like her playstyle was purpose built for people like me. Usually in tales games a level of grade grinding Is required for NG+ to get everything... Somehow me maining Velvet the whole game caused me to have 10x the required grade for NG+. Arise was a really nice fun change... I do however wish they would have included multiplayer and Cameo Cosplay outfits (I mean come on Alvin and Dohalim's kits were literally mostly Stahn and Leon's kits from destiny) they could have added in a new mystic arte for each cast member based on the Cameo costumes to reference them it would have been dope.

    • @FlameUser64
      @FlameUser64 6 месяцев назад +2

@@rdraken I love Velvet's fighting style so much, but, to be honest? I… I kind of want a game about the Velvet of the prologue. The caring, naïve, idealistic, impulsive woman who fights like a demon because her body won't do otherwise. Because heaven forbid she sit still when she could _move._ There's just something about the contrast between her caring nature, and her impulsive will and reckless, feral grace, and I think it almost makes her a more interesting character than the Velvet we follow for most of the game. You know, the one who refuses her true nature again and again and again because she believes she can't be that anymore, and never gives in to the idea that she _can,_ and when she's almost about to finally realize she can still care and love the setting's metaphysics chime in to literally tell her she can't.
It's telling a worthwhile story, yes, and Velvet is a good character, but prologue!Velvet speaks to me more. I want a Tales game that tells the story of a character whose motivations and personality are basically that of prologue!Velvet. Or someone who loses that and has to learn all over again that she _can_ care, and that her care and her passion are her strength even in a world that fights them at every turn.

Honestly one of my favorite things about Xeno X is that every npc is allowed to be a person, an not just a character that goes from point a to b to c through the day/ night with a minor, if even changed, bit of dialog over the course of the game. You see and interact with people who have lives and they change through the entire story from nobdies scraping by to people who've found their place. People who felt alone and scared to having a lover or friends, finding family or their place in the world. Some are skumbags through and through, others start with no hope and by the end are full of it. It feels alive.

  • @The_Blazelighter
    @The_Blazelighter Год назад +33

The issue with Xenoblade X's story isn't that it's nonexistant. In fact, the story really ramps up towards the end. The real issue is that as soon as it starts to get interesting, it ends and hits you with that cliffhanger. That, and your character has about as much personality as a block of tofu (not to be confused with the potato).
Sidequests are undoubtedly the greatest thing ever, though. In what other game are you going to convince an alien to get shot, all for a pizza, twice? Or the time a villain's mastermind plan to poison the city's water supply was foiled by an alien hippie who just so happens to walk in and drink all the poison? Good times.

The thing with the Tales Series is that the characters are introduced with the intent of falling into a trope and thrive off of either subverting those tropes or further exploring them. The best characters in the series do just that, while the worst/ least popular characters are the ones that fail to deviate or expand on said tropes. I think Berseria does a great job with that, although the skits do kind of drag on sometimes. Like we're sneaking into a castle, but somebody has to talk for minutes on end about crocodiles in the sewer.

Skyward Sword was the *only* console Zelda game I didn't play on release. After a few years of waffling on whether or not to pick it up used with the Wii Motion plus or whatever the peripheral was called, the HD Remaster was announced.
It was legit my favorite Zelda game in a long time; I enjoyed Breath of the Wild well enough, but it's like the opposite end of a spectrum. The dungeons were basically entirely gone - generously, the puzzles were chopped up, scattered around the map, and then a single dungeon gimmick cut into four and then whatever Hyrule Castle was (I never did beat BotW!)
Skyward Sword, meanwhile, for its foibles does basically have proper dungeons intercut with linear, puzzle-based 'overworld' segments that are dungeon-esque, and that's what I consider to be the Zelda series true competitive advantage - expansive open worlds have become steadily more replicable. Masterfully designed dungeons not so much. It's only bittersweet that it seems like the Breath of the Wild formula is what will win out in the end.
The only other game I've actually played extensively is Radiant Dawn, and yeah that's such a weird black sheep. I bounced off it due to the ping-ponging difficulty (Dawn Brigade missions are stupid hard; most of the Ike missions are just a slog vs. a zillion enemies, sometimes with hosts of NPC allies too!)
I've actually just started playing Tales of Berseria on a whim; I'm totally unsure what to make of it thus far. To call it less anime seems ridiculous to me, it's simply ridiculous edgy-to-the-point-of-camp anime (and I'm just honestly disappointed how it feels like they totally wasted the likeable protagonist on a goofy revenge story, espeically since I'll always stan martial arts girls).

Radiant Dawn still hasn't quite shaken the stigma because the difficulty manifests as not being able to deploy many characters for extended periods of time, which sucker-punches newcomers that had no way of seeing it coming in most cases and is extremely Iron Man unfriendly, which is hilarious when considering that Intsys' attempt at finding new consumers until the higher ups insisted on adding Casual Mode for New Mystery was insisting that those dead units weren't a big loss.
Also certain supports like Astrid suddenly never having siblings or the Black Knight's reverting to the character he was before PoR's localization managed to create continuity errors with the previous game.

    • @jvts8916

By the way, I feel like Intsys may have constantly shot themselves in the foot with the "no big loss" excuse given the support system of the SNES era onwards (except Shadow Dragon) made them more than just another fighter that happens to be named and they could've taken a page from their existing audience and said you could just reset if you weren't satisfied with the results.

Berseria did try to stand out with it's more darker tones which I do appreciate at the end since most tales games are usually lighter with exceptions being games like Arise, Abyss, Xillia 2 and Symphonia- I did enjoy it a lot though! The cast was pretty fun, not my favorite but I enjoy them, though gameplay side I felt was too simple for it's own good, but for me it was the story that carried it through me. Makes me curious as to what is YOUR favorite from the series, and as another Velvet lover to another, my man. 🤝

Heck yeah, Velvet fan club. That's what we are here at the Super Hambone Military Compound/ Correctional Facility.
If I had to choose a favorite Tales game it would be between Arise and The Abyss. I'm currently playing through Abyss in full for the first time and I'm really enjoying most aspects of the experience. Outside of some freezes and a very odd softlock I encountered it has been a pretty consistently high quality experience. I especially like Luke as a character and think his arc is well paced in the sense that he begins to change right as the player and the party begin to get sick of his shit. The change isn't an immediate 180 either, he's still impatient and naïve, just with far less selfish motivations.
I can speak on Arise in its entirety since I beat it back at launch and thoroughly enjoyed nearly every aspect of it. Even with the pacing problems in the second act I had fun from start to finish and am happy with the direction the series is taking. I've spoken on Arise at length though so I won't rewrite the sermon.
Though all of this may change when I play Tales of the Tempest. I've heard that game is so good it integer overflows to a 1/10!!! Can't wait.

As for arise, me and you share the same opinions on it as a whole, especially the fact that it brought a little more folks to a wonderful yet very cheesy series for the most part. I just wish the last portion wasn't such a slog to get through, but hey can't always hit. My favorite out of the series is Xillia 2, though my favorite combat wise is Graces f and Destiny DC. As for the game itself, while the special attacks as items thing is kind of annoying and the final stretch goes on for just a tiny bit too long, those are my only two complaints. Honestly I can even see where they were coming from with the attack item thing, since a lot of games feature a separate resource like MP with items to replenish it, turning the special attacks into items themselves must have seemed like a way of cutting out the middle man.

  • @metazoxan2

I think Berseria was very much a reaction to Zestria.
Zestria is a game that can be fun if you ... frankly just avoid grinding and play the story without stopping. The game's pacing is terrible especailly around the middle part where it drags way too much. But just have fun with the combat and don't slow down and it's a lot more tolerable.
Even then it's not great though. It's main character is just too bland, it's villain has pretty weak motivation but he talks like he knows everything, and the world itself feels dull due to all of the fantasy elements being hidden from the people so you have a world only a select few know is fantasy which results in the world itself being designed like a non fantasy world ... which means it's just a bunch of normal towns an stuff until you get to the dungeons and most of them are just fairly bland looking ruins.
So with Berseria they tried to stand out more to make up for Zestria.

    • @noisepollution4473
      @noisepollution4473 Год назад +3

Berseria also makes the plot of Zesteria less bland.
      SPOILERS!!!
Knowing the origins of the good vs evil thing Sorey is doing makes that entire world feel morally compromised which adds just a little bit of irony to the whole game, making it much less bland.
Unfortunately you do also have to play the game. And the story itself is still the same, even if knowing the amcient past gives you a little extra context.

    • @rdraken
      @rdraken Год назад

The other issue with Zestiria is the cast is made out of paper-mache. The party members go down so easily so higher difficulties are just a slog unless you are over leveled... And even then the AI controlled party members have a notably high mortality rate. I get that was the design swapping the Seraphim and using Armatus to rez the Shepard/Squire... But that was so bad. I liked how Xillia 1 encouraged you to swap party members mid combat to get advantages and it felt funnily enough less forced.

@@SaintJoseph911 Maybe a little when your monster hunting.
But it's a lot shorter on the slow parts.
Zestria's problem was more than half the game was you going through these entire maps to get divine weapons to unlock each form. Then you had to go through ANOTHER dungeon to unlock the super skill of each form.
So most of the game was you dungeon diving over and over while the main plot largely just ... waited for you to finish.
The main bad guy only jumps you once or twice and other plot relevent things are more like distractions from the dungeon diving rather than happening during them.
On the other hand when you're hunting the special monsters the enemies are constantly on your tail and interfeering.
Of course if you want to 100% the game you have to find all the crucibles and junk which slows the game down. But that's optional.

I really enjoyed it for what it is. The sword combat is quite fun, the music is phenominal, the art style is beautiful, the characters are great, and the locales are varied which I prefer at the expense of interconnectedness. You covered pretty much all of the variables even though it wasn't quite emphasized that sequels in Fire Emblem were almost nonexistent. The only example of a true sequel at that time would be Mystery of the Emblem, which also included Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light packaged with it on the SNES. Blazing Blade was a prequel for Binding Blade, but the western audience never received Binding Blade so up until then connected games was nonexistent outside Japan. Now separating those games by a console is even more of a split for the players.

You know what I really love about the "Tales of" franchise? Everyone has different favourites and lists
Some say Symphonia is their favourite. Some say Abyss, some say Vesperia. And some say Berseria, like I will.
Having played the majority of 3D Tales games and after a bit of thinking and research, I think it mostly depends on what you are looking for in a game.
Do you like a more story/character driven plot? Berseria and Abyss are probably on the top of your list.
Do you like methodical, detailed and deep combat? Look no further than Graces F, Vesperia and Xillia 2.
Do you like a bit of both? Xillia 1 is probably up there with Symphonia and perhaps even Zesteria despite its flaws.
As a result, my favourite Tales games are as follows:
    1. Berseria
    2. Abyss
    3. Xillia 1
    4. Symphonia
    5. Zesteria
    6. Vesperia
    7. Xillia 2
    8. Graces F
Edit: yes, Arise is still on my TODO list, but I don't feel as inclined to play that game for some reason. I feel it is more combat focuses, so hence why I am skeptical to start playing it.

Berseria is pretty bog standard though.
Only real difference is that, rather than try to talk to everyone about why she is actually the good guy and her quest for vengeance is just and righteous, Velvet just says "Fuck it. People can call me the lord of calamity all they want, as long as i get my vengeance. If killing Arthur also means the world can retain their free will, happy accident"

I would argue that either Gaiden or Genealogy (or maybe Three Houses) would be the weird stand-outs for Fire Emblem. They feel the most different from the general series. Gaiden added a world map, multiple protagonists, changed promotion rules, etc. Genealogy is the only one where you can deploy your whole army every map, did the Castle thing which made the battles feel more strategic than tactical at times, put the time skip in the middle, introduced child units (which Awakening would bring back in a way that makes sense and Fates would bring back in a way that doesn't), did the arena differently, did inventory differently... Yeah, Genealogy is the real weird Fire Emblem, to be honest.

Absolutely agree. Berseria had better character development, story, and god I hate Arise’s skits, both for the new format and the fact that too many are must exposition, where prior Tales games used skits for further characterization and fun moments. Berseria ended up my 2nd favorite Tales after Abyss (then followed by Vesperia and Symphonia) so I was rather let down by Arise (rather telling the developers later admitted Arise wasn’t even a Tales game early in development).

As someone with somewhat unusual video game taste, especially in the already somewhat niche JRPG space, it was so fun watching this video. I loved almost all of these games, but yeah, they’re also all very weird. Xenoblade X especially, the story is serviceable, but in comparison to the mainline series, it’s trash lmao. But your comment about the gameplay is totally true, the Skells and world are unlike any other game I’ve played, and I used to screw around in it for hours in high school.

Berseria was my very first tales game. I went into the game knowing next to nothing about it after being reccomend it by a friend and my mom later buying it for me as a birthday gift. I fucking loved it, I was blown away and surprised by how much I ended up loveing that game to death. Sure, it's flaws are very apparent, the music is mid minus a few tracks, the zones are mostly boring, and towards the end the combat was wearing me down (something I'm glad Arise fixed). But overall, Berseria became one of my favorite games ever and it's what introduced me to the series, I absolutely loved it's story and characters. Now I need to find a way and time to play the others, I've only played Arise after Berseria 😅

I've watched pretty much all of your content across the past few days, and I really like the things you have to say, you're super succinct but also have a lot to say and manage to get a lot of content across in a relatively short runtime and bring your personality across really well. You really deserve the growth you've been seeing! Keep up the good work.

Radiant Dawn is so great, very scuffed though for sure. It’s a very ambitious game and a couple of balance changes/additional gaiden chapters for the Dawn Brigade could easily fix the rougher edges.

Integrity and Faithlessness is my favorite Star Ocean and i'm not ashamed of it.
If someone is an avid gamer and every game they love is "critically acclaimed" and they dont have any games they feel the need to defend against a negative popular opinion, not a single one, I think that's boring. Like they mold their taste only around what's popular.

Honestly some of the hate that game got end I will agree it's my least favorite of the star oceans but the hate it get filled way to overboard.
But Hey it at least is still considered canon along with 4 as 6/Divine Force Showed so at least Tri Ace still considers it and the last hope still decent those games weren't completely bad I enjoyed my time with them they may be my least favorite but none of them Are below that 1 game that I consider completely non canon even the creators view it as non-canon that is SO3.
People overhate on SO 4 & 5 but those games are at least star ocean games I don't know what the h*** 3 was.
Says something when 3 is the only one without a "Kenny" in it😂
But yeah I still accept SO5, It might have annoyed me with its story and at least some of the characters and it's attempts to be star ocean 1 without the time travel. But I still remember having a good time with it.

Let's not forget the grandpapi of all weird fucking sequels.
Kingdom hearts Chain of memories is the second entry story-wise to the franchise. It is a direct sequel to a ps2 action-rpg, on the gba with a weird action-tcg format that introduces the main villains for the subsequent saga of the story. It is also a pseudo-remake of the first game rehashing the exact same plot-points and worlds that were already present in the original ps2 game. And not only that, the next mainline game, kingdom hearts 2, is a direct sequel to chain of memories and the events of the game are crucial for subsequent entries but are never really addressed directly unless you play the original game.
To this day fans of kingdom hearts do not know what to make of this thing. Or its ps2 remake which, in some regards, is clunkier to play even if it does flesh out the story more.

I actually bounced off of Xenoblade 2 because I generally don't like rpgs with auto battling companions. Like I generally want to be in control of every tool at my disposal and auto battle feels like it makes combat encounters themselves less engaging.
That being said I played quite a lot of Xenoblade X. The plot and world was really engaging and the combat was so simple I didn't care that I was hands off in most encounters. Until the Mechas. Basically, having a whole second set of equipment and skills that felt mandatory to establish killed my engagement with the game.
