There's plenty of good players, sure, but I think the main reason we see lower ranked players reaching the later stages in these tournaments is the silly best of 7 matches they have in the early rounds. It's way too short a format. 4 frames is nothing - pretty much any pro can win 4 frames against another pro. It's almost a lottery.
It was a really rubbish shot, to try a safety and open the pack like that. It was a school boy error in the a semi final of a major tournament. May regret that for the rest of his life.
