Jump is often overlooked because its a keyboard heavy hit, but the solo is tremendous and the fact that Eddie made it work in a Keyboard driven pop song was genius.

When I first heard "i'll wait" solo, i thought, "wow, he finally played a Clapton- esque solo, and it is perfect "
really bluesy, but still EVH touches all over it. I love the tone, or "sound" of His guitar on this whole album., but that little solo is so subtle ,melodic and tasty.... one of my favorites.

@@rightchordleadership; brother I agree. Butch completely ignores any solos from 'Diverdown" and every album afterwards. Eddie's soloing on all VH albums regardless of era and singer are all amazing. Another unbelievable solo that neither one of these guys mentions is the soloing on 'Humans Being."
To just mention and give props to solos from the first three or four albums shows a lack of understanding for the depth and genius of Eddie throughout his entire career.

    • @rightchordleadership
      @rightchordleadership 3 года назад +2

@mark grgas Well, Pete and Butch are certainly welcome to pick their favorite solos, which may or may not be the same as ours. What I would say is that if one restricted themselves to the first four albums, they’d be missing out on some phenomenal EVH solos. When every solo the guy played is a potential contender for a top 10 list, it becomes a very difficult exercise.

I have been a huge EVH fan all my life. I am 54. I remember seeing him live and on all the concert footage throughout his career with his guitar solos...and cigarette. It's too bad that cool trademark of his was part of the reason we lost him so early. One of my other heroes was Rod Serling, another person and who was hugely influential in his area of expertise, and who's trademark was also the lit cigarette, it was his undoing also. Don't smoke kids.

Three thumbs up for Pete, Butch, and Eddie! Big Love guys! Here's a little anecdote for you guys. There used to be a radio station I listened to that had a contest where they'd play a Van Halen solo and the first person to call in with the correct answer would win some VH cd and merch. I could guess a solo in the first three seconds every time! Too bad we didn't have cell phones back then. I might have won something. My top five Van Halen solos aren't his best five solos, they're the ones that stuck with me all these years later.
    5) Push Comes To Shove ~ Fair Warning.
    4) Fools ~ Women And Children First
    3) Mean Street ~ Fair Warning.

Was never a fan of tapping. But what I love about Eddie was his use of the blues scale. As a guitarist myself I love that flatted 5th and nobody worked it better than Edward. He touched on it in almost all of his solos but one of my favorites is the solo on “Outta Love Again “ R.I.P. Maestro...

    • @gabriellarrubia1006

I personally love tapping as a technique, the fluid nature of it and just the whole sonic texture it offers... But I'm glad you mentioned this aspect of Eddie's phrasing which is massively overlooked... He could do a solo with no tapping whatsoever and it still sounded different, refreshing...

Eddie/Edward is my favorite guitar player ( and may he rest in peace) so making a top 10 was difficult, but I was able to round everything up.
    10. Jamie's Cryin' - The intro solo is simple, but incredibly melodic and catchy
9.Runaround - One of the few solos where Eddie used a wah pedal,
8.Spanish Fly - Eddie being Yngwie before Yngwie. Jokes aside, always loved this solo more than Eruption, with the ascending scale run on the e and b string being the most shred guitar played by Eddie
7.Jump - Funny that Van Halen's biggest song has a solo that says everything about Eddie, blues licks, tapping, big bends and symmetrical scale runs
    6. You Really Got Me - short, flashy and blistering
    5. Mean Street - The intro solo is the most unorthodox solo ever, with the slapping and tap harmonics which really catches your ear.
    4. House of Pain (solo before the breakdown ) - Eddie's most melodic solo, showing off his Holdsworth influence
    3. Feel Your love Tonight - If Bottom's Up is Van Halen copying ZZ Top, this is Van Halen copying Boston. I love this solo as it features no tapping, is one of the few Van Halen solos with a chord change backing it, and most of the licks sound amazing, despite making no sense with the key.
    2. Somebody Get Me A Doctor - Much like the solo in You Really Got Me, short and blistering, and the arpeggio that Eddie plays at the end is one of my favorite phrases from him
    1. I'm The One - One of the first Van Halen songs I listened to and the first that made me realize how amazing of a band they are and what a great guitarist Eddie is. Had Eruption never been on the debut this would be the guitar song on the album. Eddie shows off every single one of his techniques, tapping, crazy whammy stuff, scale runs, bluesy licks and even during the verse and choruses of the song Eddie will play a cool, short phrase. It still blows my mind when listen to the song (especially the isolated guitar track video)

A great and timely show Made even more special by someone so obviously a devoted fan - thanks Butch. And you, too, Pete. Have stated before that EVH was the first guitarist since Jimi Hendrix to make me ask the question.....Who is THAT? And those two remain my favorites to this day. All I can do these days is listen to Eruption at least once a day. But the Beat It guitar work also keeps playing in my head these days. Thanks, guys, for such a heartfelt show.

Nice to see Butch back again - how about doing yours and his favourite solos by Gary Moore?
I really like these shows as sometimes you get a curevball thrown it that makes you go back and revisit stuff - Jeff Young's pick of Whiter Shade of Pale by Schenker being one, and Butch's love of VH2 has made be revisit that as I usually tend to gloss over it - when it came out I think I dissed it a bit, as trying to copy the first album, however listening to it a few times again it really is great and I can see why Butch loves it so much. Another thing I also did after watching this was to digitise Beat It off my wife's cassette of Thriller and then edit out most of the singing to just leave a mainly instrumental at around 1minute 30 - as I throw together compilations of you top tens and hourable mentions to make interesting playlists to listen to while I'm working but just couldnt bring mself to listen to Michael Jackson, though I used to love it when Beat It came on the radio as the British DJs , who always used to cut off any guitar solos on singles had to keep the solo in - though I never air guitared while trying to skate!

Story i read about the beat it solo was, eddie was kept waiting around to do his part so he went to the bar, time comes for him to play his part,he`s had a bit to drink ,he`s sitting on the stool as the track is playing and starts falling asleep, seconds before he`s due to come in they bang on the window to wake him up,he wakes seconds before his take and, plays that solo, amazing, hope it`s true

Too hard for me to do a top 10, just hearing Edward play is the best ear candy for me. I need to get my hands on some of those early club days bootlegs. My uncles got to see them a lot during those days. They always tell me they were better than most stadium/arena bands at that time.

Eruption obviously because that tapping technique that he did on the Frankenstrat STILL drives me insane. I also love his solo from Dreams when Hagar became their new lead singer. I also liked his guitar solo for Hot For Teacher. The Beat It guitar solo, and his guitar solo to Jump. That guitar tone with pinch harmonics is incredible.
Edit: I forgot to include Spanish Fly on here because that's another great EVH guitar solo
I also think he wrote some great riffs/solos for the keyboard too. He had great melodic phrasing on the piano. Obviously, he was trained classically on the piano when he and Alex lived in Holland in the Netherlands before coming to the States when he was 8. I play keys/sing, and they're my favorite instruments. I have to name these out:
    1. 1984 - 1984
    2. Synth solo/synth riff to Jump - 1984
    3. Dreams synth riff - 5150
    4. the melodic piano riff to Right Now - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

Oh man, no way to avoid the long paragraphs on this one... I can't stress enough how much EVH was important for me. Always got positive vibes, like the music just took me somewhere nice. Grew up with the hits and later as a teen fell in love with this band when I dove deeper into the catalogue. To top it all off, Eddie became one of my biggest influences when I took up guitar... a huge part of my playing comes from him and a few other guys. This is my top 10:
    10. Jump- It's one of the most overplayed songs in the EVH catalogue, but I'm still fascinated by how the notes land on this one and how the guitar interacts with the keyboards... Also, the mini keyboard solo right after it is gorgeous.
    9. Dreams- Although not the most impressive solo from Eddie, this is quite possibly my favorite Van Halen song and I think the solo is fitting, because it actually seems to have a dreamy, ethereal vibe. I can actually imagine a Dali-esque Surrealistic dreamscape when I listen to it, which reiterates what I mentioned about VH taking you to different places.
    8. Right Now- I adore the apparent beautiful simplicity in this one, where Eddie is just extracting maximum emotion from pure melody, choosing not to rely on any pyrotechnics... It's just really good phrasing
    7. Outta Love Again- As I've probably mentioned before, Dimebag Darrell from Pantera is the guitarist that made me want to play guitar... When I rediscovered this EVH track years later I immediately saw the resemblance in specific note choices, and I can't help but think a lot of Dime's chops could have stemmed from this specific solo...
    6. Blood and Fire- The last EVH solo to give me absolute goosebumps, and I think it's a perfected version of the outro solo from Unchained, which I also considered for this list for the same elements... Similar chord voicings and dynamics that give it that majestic sound...
    5. 5150- I'd argue this might be one of Van Halen's most technical songs in general, including everything from the riffs to Alex's drum fills. The solo is no different, being a total shred fest with the added difference that it's way more topsy-turvy and flexible sounding than something that a linear "shredder" would play...
    4. And the Cradle Will Rock- One of Eddie's most brilliantly confusing solos, catches you off guard with sudden changes and phrasing that goes into jazz fusion territory... I'll happily admit that I've rewinded this solo MANY times...
    3. You're No Good- As much as the first album was a complete novelty in guitar playing, I think this solo is underrated, because to me this is where tapping was really transformed into a virtuosic technique you could use to cover the whole fretboard as opposed to spamming circular patterns... Total genius!
    2. Little Dreamer- More mesmerizing phrasing, almost lullaby-like, which is weird given the technique needed to pull it off... This is just a beautiful song plain and simple, and the solo couldn't be tailored more specifically for it...
    1. Push Comes to Shove- I think this might be Eddie's most brilliant solo from both a technical and melodic standpoint... There's a marriage of classical and blues going on here, almost like a dialogue... The tapping segment is meant to sound prettier and more chill than usual, and every part of the solo reiterates the drowsy, slightly moody aspect of the song... There's almost an Inception-like feeling of a dream inside a dream, like the song is describing a shot of whiskey while thinking about a girl... I might be talking nonsense, but the expressive nature of this song is unmatched...

"Judgement Day", "Not Enough", and "Humans Being" are three examples for me of great Eddie solos from the Sammy Hagar years.
And I agree with you Pete that the solo of "Dreams" is a great of example of how a guitarist like Eddie can streamline their soloing in certain cases, yet still end up with a very memorable solo that is just as worthy as the more technical stuff.

One thing I always appreciated is how Alex and Eddie played their parts so together. The groove and feel are phenomenal. They complement each other and the song brilliantly. Listen to summer nights, or, well, all of van Halen. What a great combo that just had a great musical connection combined with ability. And Alex is very under rated overall. man just listen to little guitars or I'll wait, or every other VH. I know I'm being redundant, but I just love van Halen. They were always so much more than what the haters said about tapping and being a superficial "party band". RIP Eddie

Maybe not a true 'solo', but what Eddie did on 'Intruder' is amazing to me. The sounds he got down on tape - amazing. Plus, unlike 'Eruption', the band get to play throuhout that one. He threw those little touches in all the time, like in the intro to 'Everybody Wants Some'. For a a pure solo though, I'd have to go with 'I'm The One'. RIP

Edward was/is a legend. I knew the single works and eruption but not all the deep tracks. Did also like Jump in the days, even if it was a bit too poppy/synthy, but the best part was the guitar solo. Listen to Dreams since it was mentioned (among some other listens) and only liked the song so-so, but yeah that solo is just mind boggling. Anyway great show, with a sad undertone...

What do yous think of those amazing hidden gems from Van Halen demos that pre-date the first album? Man, theres an albums worth of songs that absolutely should have been released as a proper full album. I like Diver Down as an album- but its half full of covers. I dunno how tracks like "Lets get Rockin', "Eyes of the Night" and a host of others from their early days missed out on the albums! Amazing songs! I know that they unearthed some of them and retooled them for "A different kind of Truth", but Id love to see those old demos properly released. This was a very entertaining, enjoyable chat with yous to sit in on. Thanks for doing this.

That said, nothing will ever top Eruption, it set the standard for virtually every player that came after and sounded so alien and new to everything that had come before ! Greatest pure "guitar solo" ever, even though it's more a compositional piece. So many more, Your No Good, Sinners Swing, Hear About it Later, Ice Cream Man, Mean Street, Light Up the Sky, Little Dreamer, like I said ALL OF THEM !!!

Good choices. I honestly haven’t ever thought of making a top ten list of EVH solos and I am a huge fan. I am not going to attempt it. However, I love the one in Hang ‘Em High and the one in Push Comes to Shove. What he does in Cathedral never gets old. On a side note, Diver Down is my least favorite of the first six albums, yet it has three of my favorite songs.
