  • Onam, the most popular regional festival in Kerala falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug-Sept). After the continuous rainy month of Karkkidakom, the month of Chingam brings out the Sun and thereby bright hopes to the future in the minds of people. From the day of Atham star, pookkalams (flower carpets) are laid at the doorsteps of houses to welcome Lord Mahabali.
Thrikkakkarappan/Onathappan/Mathevar becomes the central icon of most of the pookkalams. A four faced pyramidal figure made out of clay, Thrikkakkarappan, the representation of Vamana, is placed on a banana leaf or a raised platform and is adorned with rice paste and flowers. Regional variations in the number and arrangement patterns of Thrikkakkarappan are seen across Kerala. During Onam season Kaikottikali is generally performed around Onathappan and Onapookkalams.
The traditional song of this Kaikottikali describes the preparations and excitement among Keralites during the Onam season which leads up to the grand tenth day of Thiruvonam.
