  • Here is my dog Rocky. He is is 3 yr old Belgian Malinois. Yes they are awesome but they rarely have an off and will want to play all day! If your sleepy, sick, tired, they will still need to be worked. Watch my Mali and enjoy, but understand the drive. Yes the are cool dogs that can do amazing things, but working malinois aren't for the lazy. These dogs want to work all day, their who life. So if you think you want a belgian malinos think again. Thanks for all the support

    100% on this. My brother trains with Police and SAR teams, had two GSD's, both from Czech working dog lines. There is a big difference between a dog breed from your local breeder and one from a working dog line. The latter can come with a bloodline that can sometimes go back over a hundred years, all bred for a specific purpose and they all come with an unbelievable amount of drive. His GSD's basically had two speeds: sleep and 110%, there was nothing in between. They are truly incredible animals BUT, as you said, its literally 24/7/365. My brother isnt married and has no kids and always said if a woman ever told him "its me or the dog", he'd send her packing. Sadly, all his dogs have passed and he has since stepped away from it because it literally dominated his life for about 20 years, but its an experience I always truly appreciated. Much respect to you as you probably have over 1000 hours into this dog.

It's meant for bully breeds such as Staffys, APBTs, American Bulldogs, and another pitbull breed I forget. Game bred literally means it's meant to HOLD ON TO GAME AND NOT LET GO. In other words, you got an independent dog that thinks and acts on his own, nothing like a working line mal or GSD who was bred to please their handlers. Sure you can teach them a few tricks, but to claim they have the same level of obedience as a belgian mal is ludacris. If you actually did breed game-bred pitbulls and understood what game-bred meant, then you'd be agreeing with me, not spouting nonsense for your favorite breed.

      I had six malis in my life and I currently own two of them. I also lead a dog school in Europe. Malis need a lot of time and daily training but ofc they are not energized 24h a day and they shouldn’t be energized 18h a day if the owner is holding the dog as he should. Usually they tend to sleep 18-20h a day. Training a Belgium Shepard has the same rules as other working dogs - less is more. If your dog is energized for 20h a day you should visit your local dog school to learn more about holding a malinois as obviously something is wrong and will affect his health.

      MasterPaw Quick question. Did you clicker/marker train your dog? Your dog's roll over is SOLID. Very attentive. I'm sure it helps that you have the tennis ball in your hand.

    • @MasterPaw
      @MasterPaw  7 лет назад +9

      i don't believe in clickers, I use my voice as a marker.. yes having the tennis ball is defiantly geeking him up... he is a working dog that will do whatever for the ball.. doesnt have to be out in the open obviously, and he's trained without it, but yes it def helps focus for sure. :)

    I grew up with one of these dogs, not having any siblings it was always my best buddy, from a young age until my early adulthood (she got old for this breed, over 16 years old). Absolutely wonderful animals. When the clock would announce the specific times a day on which we would go to the forest, and you did not have your shoes yet ... she would get up from her place and would go nuts and bring you your shoes, all happy and up convincing you to put them on because it is time to go! Fantastic sparring partner as well, you could fight and play around but she would always know it was just a game. For people unknown to this breed it must have looked intense.
    Unbelievable work ethic, even in her late senior years. Best friend I ever had, and I still miss this dog dearly 15 years later.. As soon as I have the time to have one again I certainly will.

He knows how to jump, stand, do a downward dog, sit, crawl, lay down, u name it. I'm not a patient person- AT ALL - but I worked with him and now I'm training him to be a agility dog and service dog to go to elderly or foster homes.

Since we got him I've heard so many horror stories about people getting huskies and they have destroyed their homes so they returned them. They have so much energy, they need to use it up during the day. Again if you don't want to work him don't get him comes into play. Our husky is crazy smart. He has two German Shepherd brothers and when he doesn't want them in the house he'll go ring the bell to let them out and he'll not go out. Sometimes he wants to be the only dog in the house so he tricks them.

    Had a malinois mix a few years back. They really do want that tennis ball. I would bounce the ball off the ground high into the air and he was locked on. As soon as the ball started to fall he would jump up, do a half flip and grab that sucker out of the air. Most athletic dog I've ever seen

    The reason I want one is to keep me busy as well. I miss my dogs, they both lived a long life but lost one in Feb and one in June, now I'm missing a big part of my life.

      Don't do it, either you're active or you are not. Don't get a malinois hoping to keep you busy, because busy is not the right word, its a full commitment, if you have any doubt in your mind that you cannot offer a malinoise 2-4 hours a day, of mental AND physical excercise. DO NOT GET ONE!
      Its more than just walking/playing.

    We have a year and half old male. Got him from the pound at four months listed as a medium German Shepard. I just figured out who he is and am so excited to start agility training with him. He never made sense to me as a German Shepard but as a Belgian Malinois he's perfect.

    Yep, they're awesome dogs- but they ARE hyper AF. They're more high-strung and have an even higher prey drive than the GSD's.

      @@DopeBoysofAtlanta Watch the dog`s actions in the vid. Should be obvious. Then, try walking a Malinois through a forested park area in spring or summer. Better keep a good hold on THAT leash, you`ll have a sprained shoulder if they see a rabbit or squirrel. ;)

    Only breed i would say hell no in every case of considering getting a new dog. Dont get me wrong, they are really outstanding on theyre own. But so much drive witout a break. You really need to be a malinois type of Person or you just cant handle this breed. I had a lot of molossian breeds with theyre own skills to be needed to handle them proper. But malinois seem to me like dobermänner on red bull & steroids

    Well done for showing this. Waaay too many people get a dog because they think it is a 'cool' looking breed , or a currently fashionable one, without long term thought to the consequences. All dogs have their idiosyncrasies, but a ''working'' breed really needs a job of work to do, or they get fearfully bored and destructive.
    Border Collies in UK had a period where they were 'fashionable', but a Border Collie is bred to work, it is embedded in their genes, just as a Lurcher's need is to chase.
    They need 'a task' to do as a fish needs water.
    A working/pastoral dog , even a small one, improperly kept can become terribly destructive/barky because he or she is bored out of their minds.

      The saddest thing I heard recently was some Malinois have been dumped in shelters. Talk about a crime! Apparently some people fell in love with them from seeing the movie "Max" 3 years ago and didn't know what they were getting into. You have to work with them and run a lot every day. You cannot go off to work for hours and leave the dog alone - he will destroy everything. What the breeders were thinking to sell them to unsuitable owners, I cannot imagine. Breaks my heart.

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 3 года назад

      @@pegster6 I only just saw your message..
      Agree totally. In 'Lockdown' my ex sister in law got a border collie pup from working parents. She is finding the dog annoying already, as are the kids.
      She grew up with ''Toy'' dogs...My brother tried to dissuade her, we all did. She wouldn't listen.
      A Border collie goes nuts without 'Work'.
      A Malinois has the same brain, but with added ''Teeth''. Breeders who sell working breeds to non working homes are unethical in my book.
      Where my son is going to rent a farm building, there is a working 'pair' of Borders.
      He threw a tennis ball for one, and the farmer said ''Oh, that was a mistake...He'll want you to do that for him Allllllllll day''...And these dogs work!
      It is a great shame when people buy dogs that are not suitable for them. The dogs suffer.
