  • I decided to give Coral Balance another go and see if it would stabilize my nitrate and phosphate levels. Well, I am not sure about that. It may be feeding the corals but it isn't helping to control phosphate and nitrate the way I would like.

    If you used phosphate-e (or gfo) to bring down chronically high PO4, it's hard to blame any product on increasing the PO4. Get it down, keep it down for a while, then try a new product. Then if they jump it's easier to make the correlation causative. I use Min S and Organic. I recommend Fauna's pO4 0.04

      I’ve really thought about trying that product out. I’ve heard great things about it. I’ve been using phosphate e for awhile. But I’m probably gonna have to change up my feeding more, but I feed twice a day kinda heavy because of my anthias. I never had luck with them until I started feeding more.

    Reef aquariums contain organic and inorganic phosphates. With that said, hobby grade test kits only test for inorganic phosphates. You're only seeing a portion of the whole picture. This may be the answer you're looking for.

      I didn’t know that! Thanks for the input I’m gonna have to research more into it. So my phosphates may be even higher than what I’m measuring? Would they better be measured with an ICP test?

    I reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaallly appreciate your videos. Documenting the trial and error of different products is fantastic. They can claim what ever they want but the proof is in the real life results. Thank you for what you do.

      Thank you! I appreciate the love. Sometimes I get a lot of flack for what I put out. I don’t claim to be an expert. I’m just a guy showing my success and failures. I’m glad it’s helping some people out!

      @shallowreefing You can't please everyone. I been watching reef videos for 10 years lol. Your type of content is getting rare. Most of it now is people showing their set ups skipping huge amounts of information.

      @shallowreefing Another thing. I have been thinking about trying coral balance based on your videos. Not necessarily for nutrient reduction but for coral health. I feel it's a new type of approach going with floculants which is what this appears to be. I currently use the diy reef snow but coral balance seems to take it a bit further. Another thing you should check out for your cyano is the diy coral snow thread by sunnyx on r2r. He talks about a method to keep it at bay. It's about the surface bacteria and just out competing the cyano.

      I’ll check it out! Coral balance definitely gave a feeding response to my corals. It did increase my skimmer production when I first used it. It could be binding things up so they could be skimmable. Maybe the conversion to urea is what made some LPS polyps extend. It’s a pretty cheap product so there isn’t any harm in trying it out.

    The Milwaukee Salinity Digital refractometer has been really great for me!

    I don't know for sure if it was the Coral Balance or not but my Phosphate did consistently lower over time while using this and not doing anything different

      I’ve been using it for 4 months now. I haven’t noticed any difference. I still need to use phosphate E from Brightwell to lower my phosphate.

    I've had the hanna checker for a few years now and with very few calibrations done to it. Its always been spot on for me and ive always compared it to my refractometer. The one thing ive always done is rinse it in RODI after each use and wipe dry. Wondering if youve done the same or end up just putting it back in the case without a rinse? Maybe salt crystals have formed in the hanna causing issues?

    • @shallowreefing
      @shallowreefing  5 месяцев назад

      I have not recalibrated it. I do rinse out my vials every time with tap water and paper towel dry. Then 2-3 times a year I do a rinse with Rodi citric acid. Then back with Rodi. That’s a good thought!

    If it sounds too good… maybe do this for few months and see what happens? I’ll probably stick with my KISS principal😊instead of new and improved products-it’s been pretty good for my reef so far.

      I love fauna Marin. It’s just hard to tell if this is worth buying. You use this in conjunction with all their other products. It makes it hard to tease out which one is the most beneficial

    Hi! How do you feed your corals? Is it on an automated feeder and always the same amount? If not maybe it could cause a variance in your phosphate levels. I have been dealing with high phosphates as well (above 1ppm) and I started using RowaPhos and it's working good. Lowering them by -0.15 ppm daily so far. Started at 0.98ppm in 7 days should be at 0.07

    Are you taking a water sample out of the tank to test with the Hanna? It's a conductivity probe so errant electricity in the tank can cause it to be wrong.

    • @shallowreefing
      @shallowreefing  10 месяцев назад

      That’s a good tip! No. But I put it in the frag tank and main display and the readings were similar. There isn’t any stray voltage because I stick my hand in there all the time 😆

      @@shallowreefing You wouldn't be able to feel below it's sensitivity. They are notoriously inaccurate. Give it a try. You spent a lot of money on it. Nothing to lose.

      I like a lot of fauna Marin products. I’m just not sure this particular product lives up to the other products. I have constantly high phosphate levels even after using this product. I definitely see a feeding response in the corals. But I would much rather use their MIN S product or coral sprint compared to the coral balance.

      Different tank gives different results. I love their Coral Balance, and most of their other product. It helps to "reset" my tank when it's out of balance. Calling it a scam JUST because you never use them is not valid.
