Thank you for making this video. As an African American woman who is a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I have always wondered what my fellow African American sisters decision to join a non-NPHC organization was based on. I think its important to choose the organization that is RIGHT FOR YOU no matter what counsel because at the end of the day, this is a lifetime commitment and it needs to be where your heart is.
Octavia Lee can I ask why I get so much slack going to a PWI, I honestly wanted to go to hbcu I just couldn't find the right one for track. It's honestly stressful because I get so much slack from my friends who went to a hbcu
Tonyelle Temple There will always be people who think that because they have the HBCU experience it means they appreciate, understand, and respect the culture more which is not true. In my experience some hbcu grads think that because we chose to go to a pwi we think we are better or that our education is worth more than there's which is not true. I think the conversation needs to be had that it is not always a choice of what offers a better education or best fit but sometimes where we simply fall into place or where we end up in life. At the end of the day no one is better than the other because we chose a pwi or hbcu
Great video until "I didn't see color" you can be apart of any org you choose but color is a big part of the culture that you love so much. Different races have created different cultures and AA orgs were created after we weren't accepted by predominantly white orgs. Racism isn't as blatant as it was with "colored bathrooms" and shit but it still very much exists. Instead of trying to erase color why not be proud of it and celebrate our differences. You can identify with whoever but "I don't see color" is a whole load of bs
This video was great! I am so glad other women of color are talking about their sorority experience. I don't know why people have this crazy stigma about "oh you're trying to be like this race, because you joined this sorority" OMG its such nonsense! I should probably do this video soon since I get so many questions about it. Greek Love to you
+TamaraSheax3 Yes you should really do this video. I just subbed to your channel and I am going to watch your videos soon. It is nice to see other women of color join other sororities its great to get the experience. I am so happy to see that you are a Delta Zeta. Greek love to you to from a Gamma. :)
Hello Karly. Thanks sooo much for making this video. You have helped me to realize that I'm not the only one and that I'm not alone. I'm African American as well and I also wanted to be an AKA. I'm currently attending The University of Texas at Arlington and I joined Sigma Lambda Gamma Fall 15. I'm so happy with my decision. At first I was extremely hesitant to join because of me being black. And your video just made me feel even better. Thanks! :)
+Kiyana Carter OMG I am so happy that I could help you . You are amazing for stepping out of your comfort zone and yes shout out to my Gammas:) Hey sissy. You made the right choice.
good you did research and made the choice for you. i cannot agree with not seeing color. color can be real but not racist. i think it is apart of being real to your culture which is influenced by your race and the struggles of the past. you don't have to deny color to respect and appreciate what our differences bring. what is the point of a multicultural organization if you don't see color. don't you need multiple colors and cultures to make that worth while.
I will say, i am so grateful that i seen this video right before i became A GAMMA.!! I was very skeptical about joining, especially going to an HBCU.! SO i would like to thank you, sister.! You definitely made it easy for me, and i will promote this video to others who felt as if there were no other choice but to join D-9. #GammaCall
Karly thank you for sharing your experience. It's so important for us to be able to enter whatever space we choose and for our choices to be respected! I'm so glad you had a positive experience and will influence your sorority for the future!
D9 orgs aren't strictly black though just fyi, by saying multicultural that means the org was traditionally founded by people of different races with goals specific to certain cultures
I highly doubt a 'multicultural' sorority will create a lasting brotherhood or sisterhood. It might be a nice club to belong to though. Cultures are actually what divide us by their own existence. Two different cultures = human division. That's why Africans, Afro-Latino's and Black Americans don't mix - they are different cultures. And cultures must separate humans from each other or they are not cultures.
Say that to the many multicultural sororities and fraternities that have existed for a while and continue to have strongs bonds in their respectful sorority or fraternity
