The Ciénaga is located between Santa Marta and Barranquilla on the Caribbean Coast. It is the biggest Cienaga in the country and a sanctuary for birds and fish and is a fragile ecosystem. It is important for the reproduction of species which have been affected by road construction.
The Ciénaga has different towns that were built in the middle of this place on water, they are the only stilt-house towns in the country that’s why it is called the Nueva Venecia, the streets are in water and it is only possible to travel by canoe. The only bridge connects the school and the church. This place will surprise you more than any other place.

The Cienaga Grande of Santa Marta was founded in 1977. It is located in the Magdalena department, in the North of Colombia and has an extension of 26 810 hectares. The average temperature is 29°C with a dry climate. The region is composed by lakes, marshlands, mangroves and canyons. It has water-formations of more than 100 swamps.
Colombia’s largest lagoon complex is to be found here, which makes it a very important place for nature. It is also a refuge of migratory birds arriving from North America. The mangrove ecosystems support and contribute to the different stages of the lifecycle of the mollusks, crustaceans and fishes. Furthermore it also contributes to the conservation and survival of the various species of the area, as well as to the development of the flora and fauna.
Among the most representative species are the cariblanco monkey, the manatee, the coypu, a variety of bats, caimans, iguanas and exotic birds, such as snakebirds and blue herons. The mangrove forest and the tropical dry forests with their small trees (the chaparro), the enormous shafts of the macondo, the wine palm and the huge palms give all the beauty to this place.
