I had a lot of fun watching Constantine and I really like Keanu's depiction of him, I think he did a really good job capturing his dry, aloof, sarcastic ways and did a wonderful job in his acting. The plot and story pacing was done very well and I'm somehow surprised I've never seen it before??? (As usual am I right LOL)

This is such a ridiculously underrated movie. I had no exposure to the character prior to the movie, so I absolutely LOVED it.

@@LGuiilhermee the character was designed to look like Sting ( the singer not wrestler) so there is that. But super underrated movie. Even recently Keanu said this was the one he wished he could make a sequel too.
See I was a little familiar with the character from the comics when this film came out. Not hugely familiar, but he had a cameo in a comic series called Books of Magic, and I'd seen a few of his comics from time to time. But even if you don't go in with a clean slate, the character is fine. Sure, aesthetically he doesn't look like Constantine, and please no don't try and make Keanu do an accent. But, the character, what he's doing, and why, and HOW he does it. Feels very much like the source material. I really enjoyed the film, and still to this day, consider it a good comic book film. It nails the atmosphere of the comics well, it feels sufficiently dark and sinister. But, yeah it's just, a really good flick.
I think this movie did cause issues for the actual character. Many are like you (and me) and never saw the character before. As a result the series struggled since it was more faithful to the source but since most people saw this as their take, it was compared to this.
Peter Stormare gives one of the best performances of his life as lucifer here and he’s only in the movie for like 5 minutes lol. And Tilda Swinton as a genderless angel is just so perfect. This movie really doesn’t get enough love imo
Genderless (or non-binary) is not the same as Androgynous, which is what they went for here.

@@OriginalPuro non-binary, androgynous, etc. The point is the character’s design is cool and Swinton does a great job playing an entity that’s beyond the mortal/human concept of gender
Stormare is the main thing I remembered from this one. He's delicious. Actually after watching this went through my DVD boxes and found it.
Before Keanu was John Wick kicking ass in a suit, he was Constantine, kicking (demon's) ass in a suit.
Who, before that, was Neo kicking (software) ass in a suit.
Keanu did some serious ass kicking as John Wick.

Keanu has said a Constantine sequel is something he really wants to do.
From what I remember from the DVD extras, the actress who played the possessed girl at the start walked calmly into her audition, introduced herself, then just abruptly fell to the floor and started writhing and snarling for a few minutes. Then stood back up, thanked everyone, and left the room again. They called her back immediately.
(Details might be slightly inaccurate to due poor memory but basically she won the role on the spot.)
And then she got to be straddled on a bed by Keanu. Lucky girl
I thought this was quite underrated. They managed to capture a real gothic moodiness that you rarely if ever see in a high budget, blockbuster type of film like this.
I absolutely love the ending, making it look as if he was taking another cigarette, but instead taking a gum.
Having Satan himself claw the cancer out of his lungs apparently is what it took for him to give up smoking. Juicy Fruit, it's gonna move ya.

@@GasBandit Well. If he was smoking as long as they say, he probably thought the damage was done and there wasnt a point in stopping. But now that all the damage is gone, he didnt want to start it back up again. Makes perfect sense.
It was most likely nicotine gum. Even with the cancer gone, he would still have the addiction to or physical dependence on nicotine.

If there was a way to undo the damage, but the cost was for example instant death should I regress into old damaging habits, then that’s a risk/cost I’d take

@@ericberlin456 Imagine if they had followed the Hellblazer storyline a lot better with Matt Ryan as Constantine.... Instead we got this mediocre supernatural thriller. Sure, I'm biased because I know the original story by the letter and I loved Matt Ryan's perfect portrayal of Constantine (he looks like Constantine, he talks just like I imagined Constantine talked and his personality is spot on).
I DO like this movie, and wouldn't be against a sequel, but if they want British, Guy Pearce would also do a great job I believe. But if they insist, I'd watch Keanu play Constantine some more 🤷♂ 😄
@@scyphe totally agree with you. Matt Ryan got the right balance between the jaded, serious guy and the other aspect, which was... well, reckless and whacky.
One of those "better than it has any right to be" movies, It has some great performances and prop work in it. Peter Stormare's Lucifer is perfect casting. Also, there actually was a Constantine video game based on this movie. It similarly didn't get great reviews, but it sure exists. You can track down a copy for the original Xbox or PS2 somewhere.
It was fun. Hell, if I'm not mistaken, Keanu himself did the voice work vs a sound-alike.
Honestly better than most movies today.
Hardly. Hellblazer was an acclaimed comic book series. Given the source material and budget, Constantine actually had a fair bit going for it. This isn't like the Lego Movie or Pirates of the Caribbean where they were greenlit by the studio to cash in on well-known but ultimately plotless merchandise and ended up being far better movies than anyone was expecting.
He's playing Constantine accurately. The character really is an a-hole in the comics. Dude is an jerk but an effective one. Can't argue with the results.
This movie has so much style and personality to it. The cast was great, I loved Papa Midnite and Lucifer.
I'll watch and love Peter Stormare in anything

I love this movie! I'm glad I didn't know who Constantine was at the time. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have liked it cause of how different he was from the comic. This is still one of my favorite DC movies.

This movie is really good imo and pretty underrated. In a interview, when ask what role he wish to play again, Keanu reeves said he wish to play this one again.
not gonna lie, i would love to see another Constantine movie starring Keanu, but i dont think the character was written particularly well in this film... i mean, he's more then just a badass who smokes and fights devils lol. He's a clever, creative and very sassy Mofo.
Like, no shit, in the comics and even some of the animated films, Constantine doesn't just give superman & batman the run-around, he fucks with all kinds of super-powered inter-dimensional beings lol he's like the DC equivalent of Dr. Strange, except way, way, way more awesome, cause he smokes and gets drunk - yes, no matter what disney or the afternoon PSA's say, smoking and drinking alcohol does make you look exponentially more awesome.

You may not know, but Keanu Reeves was in Bill and Ted when he was young. I tell you, you will love those movies a lot.

Guillermo Del Toro might work on a sequel to Constantine with Reeves coming back to the role. This was announced in 2019-2020.

Unfortunately, that's not true. Keanu just confirmed a few months ago that he tried to get Constantine 2 made but the studio wasn't interested.

This is one of those movies where, if I see it's on TV, no matter how much or little of it is left, I watch it... even though I own the DVD.
Keanu did a great job. It was a fun depiction of the character, all though Matt Ryan’s will probably always be my favorite.

Of all the times I've watched this movie, I never knew there was an end credit scene. Peter Stormare, IMO, played the best Lucifer in cinema. I'd almost sell my soul for a sequel.

@@jeremyfrost2636 Same movie apparently, and you've got the original title for it. It's just that the people translating titles to norwegian, doesn't always do so. We got "Gods army" instead. Another prominent example was when "Miss Congeniality" was translated into "Miss Undercover" for the norwegian release of the movie. In my opinion it's the sign of lazy indifference, and takes away the meaning of the original title. It's not even an actual translation, since there's no trace of norwegian in the new version of the title. This is a phenomenon that has annoyed me for decades.

@@mikethemotormouth Exactly. I saw the imdb list and it was so solid I knew I didn't need to write out the whole list; people would already know their fave 'other half' go-to female lead. And imagine them getting to play it straight, it would be killer. I could also imagine his not-so-deceased wife being there(!). Like as if she was playing the long-con; play dead to somehow get THE John Wick back in the game he left. He finally kills her, he finally gets closure. The End.

I always liked this one, only to later discover on the internet that it's universally quite bashed as too slow-paced and boring. It's pretty weird, I think Keanu's nonchalant acting (that doesn't work in all of his movies) was perfect for this.
I'd hazard a guess that _a lot_ of said "bashing" was rabid fans foaming at the mouth.

I love this movie. My friend, Pruitt played the guy who drank himself to death. Shia's part is very similar to his character in I, Robot. I don't know if you've seen that one, but I think you'd like it.

This is one of my favorite movies! So glad you got a chance to enjoy it. Keanu has said in multiple interviews that he would love to play Constantine again. So far he hasn't had any luck getting studios to take on the project. I keep hoping that as time goes on and his star power keeps ramping up that eventually the right person will change their mind and get a sequel made. There's tons of great storyline available to make a fantastic film. Find the right director and it could be something amazing. Let's not give up hope! Enjoyed your reaction as always Vikki!
The comic fans of Constantine did not really like this film, however, I loved this film. This was pretty amazing.

I’m a John Constantine comic fan who actually preferred this to the series. I know, I’m dumb.
Yeah, I still think it's a solid movie even though is not that comic book accurate. Enjoyed it.
They were just pissed that he wasn't British or blonde, so they ignored the fact that everything else about the character was done great and that the movie actually is very good. Typical fanboy behavior. Thankfully, it is more well regarded today.
Some enjoyed it, I read the books, and loved JLD's run during the New 52 which was awesome with Constantine, rebirth wasn't bad. I think it's very underrated and some people hated it for dumb reasons like "he's not british, he has black hair" but Matt Ryan's CW versions is closer to the comics and also great, but that's the multiverse for you which DC does very well honestly. I'm hoping at some point since Keanu said he'd want to play him again have a story where Keanu meets Matt Ryan's version that would be dope. But yeah the comics are way darker than this movie but still rated R, unlike Marvel one thing DC does right with films is not dumb down their characters on screen if they're gritty or darker in sake for box office "gotta get the kiddies in there" I enjoyed the movie and was very appropriate for Constantine.
I remember a review from when this came out an it had a screengrab of Constantine sitting at the bar drinking and smoking looking disheveled in his black suit after some action scene and the caption said, "Neo's fallen on some hard times." 😅

If you want a role that was good for Keanu's career like you were saying, then you need to see Speed, which was 9 years before Constantine. Speed was the one that let everyone know he could be the lead in a Blockbuster and bring in the audience. Speed was the one that let everyone know he could do more than comedy and Indy movies.
Unfortunately by the time Constantine was out, most people seemed to hate Keanu or at least enjoyed making fun of him and his "wooden" acting. That plus the fans of the Constantine comics hated this movie cos it was so different.
It was really only in the last 5-10 years that everyone started loving Keanu again. Mostly because Keanu seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Personally I've been a massive fan of his since Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and I love Constantine. I haven't read the comics, but even if I did I don't think that would stop me liking this movie.

Infamous as this film is for being an "in name only adaptation" of the Hellblazer comics, the movie is much better if taken as its own standalone work. I didn't even _hear_ of the Hellblazer comics, let alone read them, prior to watching this film. It stands up pretty well on its own. And honestly, if you're going to do a supernatural horror film, why _not_ cast The Devil's Advocate himself for the role.

The acting, special effects, and story in this movie are all so well done, it's amazing that it has taken this long for a sequel to be announced.
This will always be my one of my all time favorite movies.
Such a damn good movie. There are parts of this that are a bit over dramatic, but it gives it that "comic" flare (while also being darker and more realistic...in a way). It's not a perfect movie and characters change between this and the original material, but I do not care one bit because I love this movie.

Yes, Constantine is a DC character, though this film is a standalone film and is not connected to any greater cinematic universe (though the use of the multiverse concept seems to be retconning everything together these days). I think the MCU has spoiled us into assuming that everything is connected to some greater cinematic continuity, even if it was made before the MCU turned that into a thing.
Oh, the comics show a multiverse of Constantines...and this is one of them.
Recall Constantine even mentioning a version of himself that was a dark-haired American.

Loved this comic accurate version of Constantine, semi-comic accurate that is. Keanu absolute killed it in the character, got the character right, even though he doesn't have Constantine's blonde look.

I have no idea why this movie is so slept on. Despite the fact that Keanu is not British or blonde, this was a solid and entertaining Constantine movie. The acting was really good. I love Djimon Honsou who plays Midnight and I wish he'd had a bigger part. Peter Stormare who plays Lu was always just the right mix of slimy, petty, and terrifying. He also plays a fantastic Czernobog in American Gods, which you should definitely check out. Tilda Swindon was also well cast as the overly righteous half-breed. Rachel Weisz is good in everything. So glad you reacted to this one!

I've a friend who LOVES the Constantine comic books and HATES this movie to the extent that he disliked Keanu Reeves for a while. I love telling him that it's his favourite movie. Personally I really enjoyed it because I didn't have a prior relationship to the character.
Of all movies that got sequels, this one deserved one more than many.

There actually WAS a Constantine Playstation game. I had it, I played it, I LIKED it.
The spear can actually be watched in Vienna in the Hofburg-Museum. It is part of the German (HRE) Crown Jewels.
There are three suposed spears as part of European crown jewel collections. All of them have been chemically rested and none of them is from the right century. The one in Vienna might be the one from Antioch though.
@@DaDunge the one in Vienna has the golden hull that is shown in Constantine. Probably it has been broken sometime in its history and needed the hull to stick together. The movie assumes that it is the one which hurt Jesus, but you are right that the Vienna spear is too young for that.

As a one shot depiction of Constantine, this is a fine film. Well paced, well acted and with the right attitude.

There was a period of time where some only viewed Keanu through the lens of Bill and Ted. It was undeserved to say the least. He did such a great job in Bill and Ted, people thought that’s who he was.
