As a lifetime street skater I've been seriously trying to skate more transition as I age and this is my exact problem when I do axle stalls or grinds. I'm always on the inside still and never on top. Finally someone made a video to help with this issue. Thank You!
this video was so on time ive been trying to learn axel stalls for the longest but i can never seem to get my body weight fully on the top of the coping hope fully your tips will help me learn em tomorrow.
Man I just want to thank you. I'm 33 this year and haven't really skated in over 10 years, my board was basically just for cruising. Today I landed my first ever axle stall thanks to your video.
50yrs old and still skating mini ramps. I like your how to videos they help me out alot. Now it's just committing to the trick and not breaking a hip .
Hip pads also help a ton. The trick for some of us is finding ones that actually have padding in the right spot. It was a little tricky for me as I don't have a flat ass. Tried a skate specific pad first and it was no bueno. Ended up finding some football pads that were perfect though. They also have tailbone padding. Went front being screwed for 2+ days any time I feel on my hip to completely shrugging it off like I was still 15.
Coming back in was real weird and hard to unlock when I started skating. I finally did what you mention here - used a small ramp (I built a 2’ micro quarter just for this) and built up the courage to get it. On that tiny ramp I aimed to get my first drop in attempts to 45 degree angle rather than getting to full 90 degrees. It was easier than I thought and I discovered quickly that once I had that motion understood, I could easily go to a full 90 degree straight drop in. And once I had that I was suddenly able to do 50-50 grinds too - it opened up a lot of new variations!
This man right here is a f** master. I did exactly what he said and I can proudly say that after 2 years I've learned today Axle Stall the right way. I must say is a thing of confidence, to go straight to the top and try to balance. I swear you it works all what he said.
Just recently came back to skating after a 10 year hiatus due to a bad fall from a vert ramp. This video made it click in my head, was finally able to axel stall on a mini yesterday. Thank you!
Dude this video is prefect for me at the moment, just got the rock to fakie and rock'n;roll within the last couple months this is the logical next step but find it very very hard ! ! also landed my first heelflip today (stationary, first flip trick) buzzing !!!
Pretty well nailed all my axle stall issues with this one. I'm 43 learning to skate. I watch all your videos I see. Including when you went cross country. But this one was super helpful
Spot on brother thanks . Only been able to 50 50 grind not stall. I can drop in from the stall position but the coming up to a standing position at the coping was difficult for me . Next on the agenda tail stall
If you watch the video back Chad you're never stood up straight. It definitely helps with locking the trucks into the correct position if you lean slightly into the ramp(personally). I find that when you stand up vertically it locks toe side if you very slightly lean in, locking into heel side happens more easily.
super helpful! I've been skating for 10 years and I'm still terrified of coping, or the height of the coping. I think also I struggle with this trick as I'm naturally more on my toes when I skate. gonna try these tips later today, hopefully get my weight more onto my heels and on top of the coping. I have a friend who does these with his back truck fully pushed into the coping, not hanging off at all, and then he drops in. don't know how he does it but I've never seen him hang up. it's all in the belief!
Perfect upload timing 😂 i got slash grinds down real good but have been struggling with these. I haven't been going straight at the coping so i will have to rey that today
Have learned to axle stall but would like to take it to bigger and bigger ramps. I like the tip about putting pressure on the heel, I'll try that to get more comfortable staying on top of the coping
backside 5050 axle stall was the first thing i learned on my quarter pipe. i still cant rock to fakie but axle stalls all day. getting the correct speed and transferring your weight up to the edge of the ramp. as a beginner speed was probably the most important part, make sure you have enough speed to get up to the top of the ramp without flying up there. i just learned my first transition trick this last month with a 2ft quarterpipe i built, and was able to learn and transfer my skills to my local skate parks 3ft and 5ft quarter pipes. also was able to grind some jersey barrier transition at my local but havent been able to ride out of that steep transition at the bottom.
Great content, I've been following you for a while and your tips are excellent. I only walked on the street but riding in bolw and mini ramp is awesome! Thanks Chad, we're together!
What a legend!!! Thx for the tips Chad!!! One other fear of me is slipping over the coping, which I did many times allready hahaha. But I'll keep trying 🤘🤘
I just turned 26 last week and still have vivid memories of slamming hard on my local skateparks ramps as an 8-year-old when trying this trick. Just worked up the courage to learn it recently, but still not fully confident on bigger ramps yet. Thanks for the tips.
DUUUDE same im 20 and a fall on a 5050 grind when I was 16 dislocated my hip and made me quit skating.. for 4 years, relearning this trick and im just proud of myself for grinding it sideways haha
I’ve been working on this, longer 5050 and launching out / rolling in for the last 2 weeks. Getting so close! Launching out and rolling in is still pretty terrifying though!
Nice! I’ve struggled with this, But its really a mental thing. I’ve always strayed away from transition just due to fear of getting absolutely destroyed on a 3-4 foot quarter pipe lol, But I’ve been getting more comfortable on transition lately! For some reason 5-0 stalls are easier then getting into 50-50, Problem is I’m doing what your describing by going at it wide instead of straight on. I’m gonna try these methods next time I’m out!
@ChadCaruso - For me it's not the fear of the coping, it's locking the back truck in - which is the lack of speed I need to to so. So my problem is a lack of pumping at the base of the ramp. My later video @rekallism shows that. Without the lock, then pulling the shoulders back, I'm getting stuck. I'll get it.
I can 5050 but cant axle, especially on pool coping/concrete coping, I don’t know why itjust freaks me out. But this will def help, perfect timing for me Chad😂
I can get myself on top of the coping but I find a lot of time my weight and momentum keeps throwing me off and my stall will slip out onto the deck. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Maybe I’m standing up too straight and need to lean into the transition more 🤔
Another tip is to only pump on the wall before the axle stall and not pump while going up into the axle stall. That's what was messing me up for a while.
I personally never recommend sliding your back truck back down. I recommend learning how to turn in properly. With the right pressure on your toes on the back foot, you can turn in fine and even do what I call edgers where the back wheels come over the coping and you ride on the edge of one wheel and come back in. The muscles for using your heel or toes needs to be developed. It can be practiced quite safely under the coping.
It’s so embarrassing but after skating 16 years I never learned how to do a proper standing up axle stall. I learned front rocks before a basic axle stall (proper one, not a carvy in the ramp edge one).
one thing nobody mentions how to prevent is falling backwards where your board slips off the coping down the ramp JJST Like i knew it would. how do you stop this?
Actually my main problem is that I overshoot every time. Even when I drop in as lightly as I can. Also standing on the heel is extremely weird at first. Felt like slipping out. Overcoming fear on this one is not too bad though. Tail stalls standing up is what’s causing me trouble 😂
I used this as a guide for learning them. After doing them for a while I tend to cross lock off the toe wheel. Just feels more stable when standing on top. Plus it’s pretty hard to pinching your heel side wheel when re-entering. Anyone else find this??
Fear is MASSIVE My tip for beginners is walk before you run 1. Find the most MELLOW bank and try to 50-50 stall consistently at the top of the bank 2. Once you got mellow banks then start trying them on progressively steeper banks until you are comfortable doing a 50-50 stall on the biggest banks in the park By this time you should have the muscle memory subconsciously drilled into your brain & now you're ready for step 3. 3. Find the most MELLOW quarter pipe that you can possibly find. The more mellow the BETTER. Practice step 2 over & over on the quarter pipe & watch videos that show you how to properly lock in to the stall. If you're lucky & you have extremely mellow quarter pipes then the learning curve wont be too bad If you only have access to massive or steep quarters then fear of falling might hold you back for a while {BONUS TIP} => Locking in correctly is all about repetition & FEEL. Some people find it easier to lock straight into a BS feeble stall. Which is absolutely fine... It helps build confidence up on the coping. 4. Once you have proper technique on mellow quarters then take it to progressively bigger & steeper quarters. OPTIONAL STEP #5. Do it all again from the start but switch
fuck it is so hard, I can drop in from the axle stall but I have so much trouble standing up and going straight up into it. It is totally a fear of the coping
I feel as though people who are confident and comfortable don't even think of this as a trick. If you're like me and scared of skating then it'll take years...

Get it homie!
So it's my friend. I had the same problem with this and I think the cause is the fear. I will try to follow exactly his advices. Thanks a lot, Chad!
2 hours doing axel stalls , get home open RUclips to this . Quality. Good video
this video was so on time ive been trying to learn axel stalls for the longest but i can never seem to get my body weight fully on the top of the coping hope fully your tips will help me learn em tomorrow.
Yea same. I need too stop this fear of standing up
Lean back on your heels. That’s simple.
Agree 100%
and make sure you have enough speed when you go for it
Man I just want to thank you. I'm 33 this year and haven't really skated in over 10 years, my board was basically just for cruising. Today I landed my first ever axle stall thanks to your video.

Age doesn't matter bro. There must be a 51 yr old there to top you!
Old man here. Age doesn't mean shit, Tony Alva is in his 60s! Tiger Balm ,water, stretching, and a good diet will help with everything
Hip pads also help a ton. The trick for some of us is finding ones that actually have padding in the right spot. It was a little tricky for me as I don't have a flat ass. 56 and still going.
I needed this. Subconsciously holding back. I can't launch out either but I want to. Thanks for the tips.

this would have been helpful like 3 months ago but now i can do 50 and 5 0 grinds on vert great video this will be helpful for a lot of people
Great video Chad! I've been trying to help a friend learn these and this is the perfect tutorial.
Gonna try this tomorrow. Thx Chad!!
Thanks Chad. Just what I needed
Great tips as always not only for learning from the scratch, but also for perfecting the trick. Thank a lot, bro!
Thank you. I need to get my switch axle stalls better and this is very helpful

Stinks that you can't travel right now and make the videos you want to.
But we really appreciate these tutorials. 💪💚

Yes!, love extra tips on the basic transition tricks

After my shoulder recovers (from my last fail).
I’ll be trying this.
Exactly what I needed to nail this trick!
Awesome Tips, started skating this year and Chad’s videos are super helpful!
Yesss sirrr, the chad god is here!! 🦈🔱🔥🤙🏽
Always briging us cool and precious tips. Keep goin' strong!!!
Great video man! I really needed an axle stall breakdown like this
Chad Thank you!!! 🙏 I beleive I requested for this in one of your other videos. I've been trying this trick for like a year or 2 on and off.

great one chad!
read my mind on this one man! gracias!
What a legend!!! Thx for the tips Chad!!!
One other fear of me is slipping over the coping, which I did many times allready hahaha. But I'll keep trying 🤘🤘
Hey Chad, thanks for the video... Do you recommend loosening the trucks for the axle stall so that heel pressure is easier?
It shouldn’t make too much of a difference, ride whatever you feel the most comfortable riding
Nice one, Chad. 👍🏻

@@DNGx3 aye bro, going 6 months strong so far and I can't believe I ever stopped in the first place !

Thank you, can you do the same about 50 50 grind on miniramp. I cant to go heels for long to grind I'm still in the ramp and grind for one second.
@ChadCaruso - For me it's not the fear of the coping, it's locking the back truck in - which is the lack of speed I need to to so. So my problem is a lack of pumping at the base of the ramp. My later video @rekallism shows that.

Hi , I have a question about bs smith grind , I can do it but not so long as I want so how to bs smith grind longer ?
Awesome vid, didnt need nothin more
Any tips for doing this on actually pipe coping or pool coping?
I’m doing this on my next trip to the park
Thanks!
I always go to the side like a big angle without realizing how it affects like speed and power thank uuuuuu
Would you suggest practicing an "axle stall" drop in first
Thankss!
The virgin mini ramp skater (me) vs the Chad Caruso
Was that a Chapman fish lure? 👍
I have trouble getting the speed high enough to get out on my first drop in. any tips?
Bless your soul fr
I can get myself on top of the coping but I find a lot of time my weight and momentum keeps throwing me off and my stall will slip out onto the deck. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Maybe I’m standing up too straight and need to lean into the transition more 🤔
This is the video I need! But my man, but turn your mic up audio is low :(
Obrigado. Eu estava subindo muito reto a rampa e perdia velocidade, quando comecei a virar perto do coping, acertei a manobra quase sem esforço.
love the vids
I've been doing bs5050s and even fs5050s just by carving higher on bowls, can this slow my progress? How and how do I fix it
Try learning to feeble stall, it helped me with cross-locking your trucks if you're used to leaning in the ramp.
Wish I had a ramp like this.
I always seem to get into a feeble stall and jump off or i will miss the coping and slide out falling to the bottom.
Lucky guy with a nice ramp like that in his area
Great 🎉

So its all about speed?
Any old skateboard set im verry happy if its happen im from philippines and if its happen i tresure it
I love my axlestall Sexchange and Rock n roll Sexchange. Or onefoot tailstall. Or shuvit to rock.
I have been working on axel stalls and this is why I can’t pull it off. Getting very close.
What's sad is I knew all this in my mind but it's as you say its having them balls to just do it
nice
I can kickflip bs 5-0 a ledge, but cant axle stall a quarter pipe it feels like a curse at this point
I need like a 1 foot ramp!!!
This trick is hard.
Backside no problem, frontside……major problems and just like 360 flips I haven’t done one in 20 years.
I feel as though people who are confident and comfortable don't even think of this as a trick. If you're like me and scared of skating then it'll take years...
I can thoooo
Where you was 1 month ago with this video? (((
I dont know why I cant get it mann 😭😭
thay coping looks sooooo slipery!!! hahaha
Seems like your board's gettin a little bit wider, or maybe thats just me
**cant axel stall on mini RAMPS.
