After Nicko's stroke, this comes as no surprise. God bless you Nicko, thank you for your amazing playing and larger than life personality. Best wishes!
Been a Maiden fan since 1990, saw them at Monsters of Rock 92, a number of times after and at Download 2022. Going to miss him behind the drums, God Bless you Nicko, thanks for your energy you gave to the band and for being part of all our lives as Maiden fans.
Nicko is 72 not to mention the rest of the band isn't far behind him age wise. Plus it made me feel weird when I read the announcement cause Maiden was the soundtrack to my childhood in the 80s all the way to now. I realize I'm getting older and so are my favorite bands and they're not going to be around much longer. I was hoping for (and still am) one last studio album before they call it quits for good.
I think one more album is a distinct possibility ! I think Nicko would be involved to some degree if another album happens ! Their last album was pretty good . The track "Hell On Earth"stands up among their best tracks ! IMO
Been a fan of Nicko and Maiden since 1985. I am sad but he couldn't keep going forever, but look at his legacy absolutely incredible. He is a phenomenal Drummer. Nicko really can't be replaced. Maiden will now sound different. Love you Nicko... An old Metaller..
I'm 54. I remember seeing Nicko on the powerslave tour at the age of 14!! His unique style made Maiden what they were through the 80's! What a legend!!
As a drummer for 40 years and a live one for 25, drumming is an incredibly physically taxing instrument to play - and with Nicko's stroke earlier this year, for him to play at a high level coming back from that is nothing short of mind boggling - and a massive inspiration to me and tons of other drummers I'm sure! Nicko being my biggest influence on the kit - his work on Somewhere in Time is ridiculous! The single kick work, the fast fills and energy - he really drives the band and as a single kick player in metal was very rare - whomever the new drummer is, the sound will change quite a bit - if it's a double kick monster the songs again will sound very, very different - Nicko is a very hard drummer to replicate - he has a very unique style - one that I have really honed in my own playing as well sticking to a single kick and playing with the crazy energy like he does (we are both Gemini's - it might be something with that too! : ) I wish him all the best moving forward - his health is #1 now.
Stephane makes a great point here. Iron Maiden don't play like other bands. There is so much going on in terms of dynamics, Steve is hardly one for staying tight in the pocket and Nicko really does drive everything and basically picks a tempo based on feel every night. It's not going to be the same band without him. I hope whoever they hire respects his parts and doesn't try to reinvent the wheel.
God bless Nicko, I really hope he enjoys his last gig! Gutted to see him retire, drumming aside, he's one of the best personalities, not just in rock / metal, but music as a whole..... we'll miss him dearly!! Any news if Sooty is staying on, or is he retiring too? 😥
just now hearing on playing this stream. It makes me feel old . I first started listening to maiden with POM as a teenager. 😢 I'm gonna go back and listen to "mission from Arry" as tribute. (2 minutes to midnight single b side)
Nicko proved he's no quitter by going on tour 3 months after a stroke which at his age was unbelievable (for any other mortal!) He put the fans first by doing this and he's putting them first again by not letting them down with in his own words a subpar performance. He's the last musician on earth that would ever sync to track, well it goes without saying the whole band would never do that! God bless you Nicko, this is the right decision so you can enjoy the rest of your life knowing Maiden will make a good decision moving forward. My biggest inspiration as a drummer. All round legend
Nicko did the right thing. This ads at least 5 years to Maiden. Maybe 10. Nicko can still play on albums along with the new drummer. I have always thought Nicko McBrain was the best drummer I've ever heard. Not just on record but live, every night, this guy was as good as it gets. He created so many of my favorite drum fills, beats, sounds, and they were all thrilling. I saw him play a month or so ago and he was nowhere near where he was pre-stroke. This affected the other members of Iron Maiden's playing. These guys are all the best at what they do and it is not fair for them to have to not be firing at 100% because another member is holding them back. Age sucks. If this was the Rolling Stones, Nicko could play those songs until the end of time. But "The Trooper" deserves to be played live correctly. Fans deserve to hear "Where Eagles Dare". Maiden is one of the best live bands ever and that would have changed if Nicko remained. If Nicko remained we'd see the band slow down and alter their sound as they age until the songs are shells of what they were. Countless other bands have made this mistake. Now, we can hear Nicko's legendary drum parts as intended with a drummer who is in their own prime. Nicko will always be a part of Maiden. I'm sure he'll still play a few songs with them. The last tour we knew certain songs just wouldn't be possible and that is over. The future is bright for Iron Maiden and Nicko. The bands legacy remains secure. Nicko is still my favorite drummer. In fact, I respect him even more now. This was the absolutely the right move on all fronts. Now... let's hope they do a better job replacing him than they did with Bruce.
Same with me. I have been saying that for several years now about the faster songs (which were unfortunately unlistenable - sorry). He was an excellent drummer, but it was the time to retire.
When Slayer first got together, they played a lot of Iron Maiden covers and Dave played with one bass drum at the time, including on Show no Mercy. Hence, I am sure he could handle it.
I wish nicko all the best hes my all time favorite drummer of my favorite band, but he really struggled on the last tour. And let me say that no matter who they get to replace him, they won't be as good as nicko was in his prime and even up to the legacy of the beast tour he was phenomenal. But i do think he needed to step down if the band were to continue because he was starting to hold the band back, even with picking songs for the upcoming tour would have been restricted with nickos current condition.

Actually Lombardo would be able to match the sound as he always had a very organic trigger free recorded drum sound… but I don’t think he’s gonna be the guy…
I am not surprised by this news. He should have retired 5 years, if not 10 years ago. I loved his work in the 80s and he was an excellent drummer, but he needed to retire. I watched several live clips in recent years and most of the fast songs had to be slowed down (I could not listened to them). I wish him best of luck with hos future endeavors.
