It amazes me that anyone can turn out a song so exquisitely beautiful. Bobby Goldsboro had a talent that I appreciate more and more as the years go by.
Love all of the BoBBy Goldsboro music , the 1960s were great years for me with my husband & all our children, all 5 of them ...later in 1970 had another one ,Ours was a TRUE LOVE STORY...HE's now serving the lord and I'm still here loving our memories ..!!
Thanks for posting this song! Bobby should have received FAR more accolades than he got for writing & singing this song! I remember it being a "sad" song when it first came out (& I was a 'kid'), but now, after being a wife for 30 years, it takes on a whole new meaning/feeling..... After not hearing it since probably the late 70's, I cried, listening to it today. (Still a wonderful song!)
One of the most poignant and heartfelt recordings ever made by anybody. This is the definitive version of a much-recorded classic by the original composer -- who foresaw with these lyrics the future breakup of his own marriage. Amazingly, Bobby's label did not release thisas a single until well after several cover versions had appeared, stealing the thunder from this priceless performance. This did chart anyway in1972, but nowhere as high as it should have.
On this day in 1969 {April 23rd} Vicki Carr performed "With Pen In Hand" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... One month later on May 3rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #35 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... Two other versions have charted; Billy Vera {#43 in 1968} and Bobby Goldsboro {#94 in 1972, and he composed the song}... May God bless Mr. Campbell...
OMG, thank you SO MUCH for posting this....I grew up with the Vikki (LIVE at Persian Room) version.....and before she sings it, she talks of Bobby, and what a great song this is, as she put it, C&W tells it HOW IT IS...." It's good to hear this song from the guy side.....
Have this on my "Bobby Goldsboro Greatest Hits Album". I used this song to help get me through a few bad patches in my life. I can relate to this song pretty well! I like little warble in his vocals! Thanks Bobby.
I've always found this song more pleasant than 'Honey'. It shows that Bobby Goldsboro could do a good job on a song; and that a sad song can be sweet without being mushy.
To all the parent that's have looked after the children and brought them up on there own and have done there best when things have not been easy god bless you
My friend and I stopped in Bobby's hometown to eat at a restaurant. My friend, Kelso, asked the waitress a question about Bobby and she had never heard of him. He was visably upset however she was of a different generation.
May female bedspacer kami non who had a 45 of this single which I played repeatedly for days hanggang sa makulele na yung tenga ng mga kasama namin sa bahay. Its so good to reminisce the past. Thanks.
I remember trying to piece my life together after my divorce & when I heard this song I’d have to stop crying &/regroup but it was all my fault. You see.
I would like to expound on the 1st comment. Both the vital importance of healthy "role models." While true that each (Mother& Father) is of crucial importance, to offspring's development, Children of both sexes; it is imperative that the relationship/role model, aka "Archetypes," Surrogate Fathers, "real Men," that are willing to get involved with divorced Women can be so mutually rewarding. I will continue to explain, next post, as time permits. For now, folks I leave you with this: Love is so redeeming, in many an Aspect. Thank you for listening
Was all this pain and heartache worth it? Was it? To never give it a second chance, You've had to have had second thoughts about it, It makes no sense. I can't and will not believe that you don't care. I just don't believe it. Not after 30 years. Why?
To all those who like Vikki Carr's version: Do the lyrics make sense from a female perspective? Only if it were the norm for a father to win full custody of a female child in a divorce. How often does that happen? Probably only when the mother is mentally ill, or otherwise incapable of caring for the child. When the song was written, it WAS common for mothers to win full custody of sons, which is why Bobby's version is the only one that makes sense.
I like Bobby but this version doesn't come close to Vicki Carr's version that's also here on youtube. There are 2. by her The amazing one last 2 mins 45 sec and is dated (1969) . OMG she sings the hell out of this song! .
Vikki Carr's version makes no sense. When this song was written, custody of children after a divorce was routinely given to the mother. The importance of fathers was not as well appreciated as it is today.
It doesn't have the passion and emotion of Vikki Carrs version, in fact it's almost jolly as if he is happy to be going. I do prefer the Vikki Carr version. Nice vid you have made up to go with it though.
OMG..Vicki Carr kills this song. I think Bobby Goldsboro actually wrote this song...but he shouldn't be singing it. He doesn't sing with enough emotion.
As I get older these sentimental songs appeal to me more and more.
He is one of country music's great's. And his music is much better then most of today's music. So many HATERS, go hate somewhere else.
+Christine Gragg agreed!
Bobby's version of the song he wrote is the BEST by far , in my honest opinion.
I agree.
It amazes me that anyone can turn out a song so exquisitely beautiful. Bobby Goldsboro had a talent that I appreciate more and more as the years go by.
I love a tearjerker and this is one of the best

Such a heartfelt song. Sad but yet, beautiful.

Wow still listening 2/14/23 song that conveys the reality of life. Sad and happy song.
It`s when the backing singers come in that really puts this song into another dimension.Tears all round.I remember this in the charts.Even better now.

Great lyric song I think 💙
My friend and I stopped in Bobby's hometown to eat at a restaurant. My friend, Kelso, asked the waitress a question about Bobby and she had never heard of him. He was visably upset however she was of a different generation.
one of the best song songs ever written, story od my divorce.
Dorothy Moore did a great cover of this song! Made the top 40 here in the states sometime back in '77 (I think...) Good song.
May female bedspacer kami non who had a 45 of this single which I played repeatedly for days hanggang sa makulele na yung tenga ng mga kasama namin sa bahay. Its so good to reminisce the past. Thanks.
Like this song....Jim Nabors does a great job on this song too..........wish someone could post Jim nabors singing this song.
So beautiful voice. Very clear.

Thanks for posting, his version is better that Vikki Carr's
Never knew Bobby recorded
this VIKKI CARR CLASSIC.
BOBBY DID A GREAT JOB
ON THIS..
bobby Goldsboro wrote the song.
No one ever sung this as well as Aretha. She sang it country and soul!

A song which conveys a scenario in real life..

Like trying to swallow a whole shot of treacle - bleah!
Awful song!! love it!!
It's only a song - don't get so wound up, the songs not meant to be serious. If you think that way then billions of songs don't make sense.
I was a Pen=PAL DADY-O
Wonder what Bobby's obsession was with Divorce? Same with Autumn Of My Life.
Hello! Smile.
10-4
Have to disagree with earlier comments, I think Vikki Carr's version far superior to this, the emotion she puts in is amazing.
309 has it right
or perhaps maybe SHE wont miss him
Vikki Carr's version makes no sense. When this song was written, custody of children after a divorce was routinely given to the mother. The importance of fathers was not as well appreciated as it is today.
did he write the song.he sang suck.fortunately vikki carr come along.
It's good but not a match for the best of the Vikki Car versions
It doesn't have the passion and emotion of Vikki Carrs version, in fact it's almost jolly as if he is happy to be going.
I do prefer the Vikki Carr version.
Nice vid you have made up to go with it though.
Who uses a pen anymore ?
I love this version, bobby is a great singer, but sorry bobby's fans, I just have to go with Dorothy Moore's version
nod dee not so. remember booby Goldsboro penned the song. and had the best version. vikki carr#2.
Gee, ain't divorce wonderful . . ?
OMG..Vicki Carr kills this song.
I think Bobby Goldsboro actually wrote this song...but he shouldn't be singing it.
