I'm in Nova Scotia and still eating from my garden ( even after that -43 night ) ....collards, kohlrabi, celeriac and carrots thankfully we're back up to -5 C to +10 C.
I've already started my peppers and onions here in Alberta! I also do tomatoes, or at least some of them, even though people think I'm crazy for that (these ones will go into containers, so I'll be moving them in and out of the house in early spring to protect them from the cold). I'm excited to see how the spinach I seeded outside last October does this spring (which won't come for us until May). Great video, I'll check out those seed trays!
I'm few hours drive up the highway from you folks. One vegetable I like growing are leeks. They take a long time to mature but they are incredibly hardy and can be left in the ground all year long and harvested when needed. Another bonus, the local deer will nibble a bit but it's not their preference. I've built a couple cold frames to assist with germinating as the winter conditions seem to be drifting further into the spring season. Also, I fertilize my garden with seaweed combined with a compost tea. Works great !
Yes, we tried growing them straight into the ground for many years and were having the same issues, we now grow them in raised beds with lost of compost and lose soil and have had more success! Make sure you water deeply as well !! Fingers crossed you have better luck this year
Garden struggles...I'm in 5a/5b and moving to zone 7a/b next week... I'm months away here...and now behind on tomato and peppers there 😞 the struggle is real... I guess if we have a longer season in Virginia than ny...maybe it will be a wash this year...next year I can hop on it sooner... never fear seed time is here!
Don't worry about your tomatoes and peppers! The good, long growing season you'll get out there will more than make up for it. I'm technically in zone 3a (but I'm right on the border of 2b and would say our winters are 2b winters) and I can still grow tomatoes, so you'll be fine!

I'm seeing questions on your mealwormthat you did it 6 months when you are cleaning them out, and I see no answers to people's questions.
