Commenting from 2024. This worked for my M451 that gave a firmware error out of the blue, possibly from a power outage the other day. Pushing new firmware with USB got stuck on "Erasing". Did the bake and put it back in. Started right up. Thank you. This really worked.

I agree with Lyle - you shouldn't have to guess which printer port the printer is connected. Even if you did, which you did, you should cut that part out from the video because those following along are wasting time following your rabbit trail. Also, it matters a that you select the right printer driver because if you don't you're likely going to get a Fatal Error 7 (google it) showing on the printer and a failed update. That all said though, thanks for the video; it's more than HP has put put to fix this common issue.
Next type CMD in Start Search, right click Command Prompt result to Run as Admin, copy and paste in the following command and press Enter: printui /s /t2 this allows you to see which port/(LPT) your printer is currently using, no need to guess. LPT1, LPT2 etc.
I had this error, but once the screen gets to the downloading and erasing screen it then says fatal error 7 and shuts itself off. Then it turns back on and just goes back to the Ready to download screen.

Hi, I tried exactly what you instructed. When I went to the virtual port, amazingly the printer responded! Unfortunately, I got a "download" message and then an 'erasing>>>>' message, but the printer stays on this erasing message. Is there anything else I can do?
I tried all the steps you mentioned but the printer screen after showing downloading moves to Erasing ans then just gets stuck at this and does not move forward. The Window used to send the firmware keeps progressing and displays the smiley and nothing happens after clicking on Exit. The printer screen remains stuck at Erasing forever..............Kindly advice what to do in this case. Thanks

@@shashi_cs6518 Called HP, paid the fee for them to walk me through all the possible troubleshooting steps and that still didn’t resolve the issue. I trashed the printer.
@@ToDoTips Except it wasn't a possibility. You hooked it up to a USB port, so there was zero chance that trying one of the legacy parallel ports was going to work. Instead of teaching your viewers to try and solve it with trial and error, why not explain to them what the port identifiers mean, so they can find the right group of ports to try immediately, without wasting time on things that are guaranteed to fail?
My brother printer firmware update has corrupted my printer so will try this method, cannot believe that the printer manufacturers do not explain this process, of course they just want to rip customers off with service charges 🤬

Most people don't like command line.

Thanks for sharing. Most people don't like command line. But I can assure you over 95% of people prefer clicks and not command window.

That downloading or erasing is the issue. Restart the process until you are successful.

Why on earth would you try all three LPT ports (which are parallel interfaces) when you know the printer's connected to a USB port?
may be one out of 10 persons know that about LPT and USB, I just wanted to show them to try all possibility.

yes that is unfortunate. such a company with such issue.
Das sind blödsinn....Formatter Board muss booten mit bearbeitete *.bin File.
Off course LPT is not going to work, LPT is a complete different port (people call themselves technicians, terrible)
