    Visited Estonia this summer, amazing place. Tallinn is so cozy and sweet, not only the centre but even away from the touristy old town the old wooden houses surrounded by trees and quiet streets with trams and almost no cars, perfect. And people are so nice and good looking with their blond almost white hair. Aww. I just want to give this country a big warm hug.

    You talked about how safe is Estonia and i just remembered reading and article and turns out that according to a report by the World Economic Forum, Estonia is globally among the safest countries to visit.It's in fact in the 15th place even ahead of Sweden. Another cool fact is that Estonia was chosen to be world's best value destination in 2018 by Lonely Planet.

    As I Finn, I do feel I take Estonia and Tallinn for granted, and often forget to appreciate how cool a neighbor we have. It’s so easy and common for us to travel there that it becomes southern Helsinki or something. But I should remember to appreciate it more in the future, because it is a really cool place.

    • @helengolovin7443
      @helengolovin7443 6 лет назад +6

      Yes, you do take us very much for granted and behave very disrespectfully to us. You just walk into a shop or restaurant or pharmacy and aadress the people who work there in Finnish. You dont even say things like thank you or hallo in Estonian. I have many times even seen that the waiter greets you in Estonian "tere" ,and you reprimand them for it and "teach" them tosay it "correctly " to you in Finnish.You the waiter says "tere", you answer "no, no Tere, You have to say "moro". So very disrespectful.And no, we are not Southern Helsinki. Helsinki is not on Unesco list, not a mediaval city with all that history.So do not any claim for our city. It is not yours.And our language is not Finnish, in case you dont know that already.

    Just visited Tallinn, Riga, and Kaunas last week! Tallinn was definitely the most beautiful. That old town area is incredible. I just wanted to say that coming from Australia, Tallinn was incredibly cheap. I stayed at a hostel (The Knight House) and opted for my own private room, and I think it was something insane like less than 20 euros a night.

    Spent a day there on a Baltic cruise. The old city is where you want to be if you have around six hours. Had lunch a very medieval style pub called Porgu, which was great. Look out for tourist trap KGB Museum on top of the big hotel. The Old City has so much going on with shops on narrow cobblestone streets. Estonia is a hidden gem on a Baltic vacation.

      True. Estonians dont speak russian. English is just fine. And if they dont understand it, then they are probably russians. The russian minority is vastly soviet time immigration.

      eksiarvamus: I never been to Europe but I have seen many countries over the internet..I really think that Estonia is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen so far.. I am planing an European vacation and Estonia is my my first choice..My question to you is Do Estonia have Bed & Breakfast places? Do I need to know anything besides what was mentioned here? I want to be respectful of the laws and the people and that is why I am asking.. I want to visit museums and old places or at least places with history..

    • @antssaar863
      @antssaar863 6 лет назад +3

      Hey. Yeah, theres all kinda hostels, Bed & Breakfast and quite few other ways to spend a night. Depends bit on where thou (but honestly country is so small its impossible to not find a place in reasonable time, lol). On summer, many places can just camp outside :) With English You should be fine, most people are able for atleast basic conversation. There is realy no problematic laws as far as I know. Until You are not drunk in some public place, theres no problem. I recommenced getting Tallinn card.. Why? :P
      Free entry to over 40 top attractions and museums
      Free travel on public transport
      Discounts to sightseeing tours, activities, shops and restaurants
      With Tallinn Card PLUS you also get free entry to the hop-on hop-off buses.

    I would not recommend speaking Russian in Estonia because often people take offense in that and besides most of the younger generation doesn't even speak Russian at all aside from the ethnic Russians of course. You are better off speaking English. If you want to test your skills in Russian i would recommend going to countries like Belarus, Ukraine etc. even in Latvia Russian is more common than in Estonia..

      I disagree with your point of view. If said person can speak russian and tourist asks something in russian then he/she wouldnt get offended.
      I think bigger problem is the fact that russian language isnt easy to learn, especially for someone with anglo-saxon origins. So asking something in broken russian that even russians wont understand may annoy people, so better stick with english.

    It's a great little town. Wasn't as expensive, well at least before they switched to Euro. There was a lack of varied restaurants when i was there, but that may have changed. Plenty of workshops selling amber artwork for some reason. You can jump on a boat in the harbour and be in Sweden, Finland or Russia in no time. Jump on a bus and you can go to the airport in 20 minutes and fly to pretty much everywhere in the Nordics in an hour or two.

    Speaking russian in Estonia is like speaking german in 1970’s france… the old language of an bloody occupation.
    We might understand it and speak a few phrases. But I would rather communicate through phones translators or whatever.
    Even a lot of russians prefer english with tourists, because they are more in the Western information room and want to practice english if given the opportunity.
    And if you can manage even a few phrases in estonian, you will gain a LOT of respect from the locals.
    And like with many capitals, Tallinn is not Estonia, it’s something else. True Estonia is in the countryside. And the islands are a whole other deal, they are proud of their Viking heritage.
    Of course, even if you just visit Tallinn, it will be a unique northern old town, and a completely different culture from the slavs, the germanics, anglos, scandis and others.

    I have family in Estonia and wish I could visit them. Hindrance is the expensive cost to fly from the USA. Once I get to Frankfurt, the flight to Tallinn is 30€uro. And again I have family to stay with once I get there. The $3200 airfare get over there is very expensive. I must admit, I'm envious that you are able to afford to travel there, but I understand everyone's finances are different. Maybe some day I'll get to visit my family in Estonia and see where my dad (who has since passed) was born and spread some of his ashes at the beach where he went as a child. What are the changes? My friend's family traces back to Pärnu, although we are talking well over 200 years ago, but I am sure he would love to hear any interesting stuff, as has was planning to visit for the first time next summer, I think.

    Finnish and Estonian are really similar languages, so you could probably get by speaking Finnish as well.

      Finns definitely don't hate Estonian language! Most of us find it cute or funny sounding :) Definitely no hate towards our southern brothers! Some Estonians can speak Finnish because because they have worked in Finland or they used to follow Finnish media during Soviet times. Usually older Estonians seem to know Finnish and younger ones prefer English :)

      You need to be careful when you use Finnish in Estonia and Estonian in Finland. Same word means two different things usually. So, better to stick with English.

      I would say English is a better option, but if you don't speak anything else then some people may know some Finnish. Once I had a conversation with a Russian woman who didn't speak English or Estonian, but she spoke broken Finnish. So we were having a conversation in broken Finnish, and luckily we were able to manage

      Yea 2 or 3 streets over and it's probably half that price. Sometimes it's worth it, if you take your time and do some people watching.

      Well of course things are going to be more expensive, when you go to the most touristy place.

      Aktivist1000 I live in Estonia, and honestly, the food in old tallinn costs alot (bc they wanna suck all the money out of tourists) but other places are fine

      I would say 8 for a soup is pricey even for touristy places. :D Some top gourmet restaurants serve soup at 10 eur here.
