I have a dog who's part Australia Shepard and I was thinking of getting him a buddy. However I have no clue if he also has separation anxiety to the point it's destructive. He does cry and whine if he's alone while we're home, but he's fairly calm and quiet when alone. Would a beagle make the anxiety worse? Would he help the beagle? I'm not really sure how it all works yet, but thought I'd ask.

@@dennysdonuts4918 personally I found that my beagles anxiety went down when we started getting more of them. I started with 1 cocker and 1 beagle then when the cocker passed my beagle's anxiety grew a lot, then the other two came and the anxiety and destructive behavior whent down too. My fourth beagle lives with other tree dog's and he is totally fine he obviously gets nervous but not as bad as it used to be

My Beagle hated being alone. In the early ages when he would start to be left outside on a runner he would bark nonstop until I came out. And when he was a puppy we could hike and he would trail behind us. Though once he got a little bigger he could not be loose or he would catch a scent and wander off. He got loose once and just came back home when he was done at night.

My beagle is one of the beast things that has ever happened to me. She's my best friend. I will most likely never get any other type of dog again. She is beautiful and incredibly intelligent, far more than any other dog I've ever had. She understands and remembers the craziest things. She's really a great dog. I barely have to tell her to do anything anymore. She just knows what to do. She has even developed her own routines on walks for places she likes to sniff and places she doesn't. She is extremely stubborn though. She's not listening unless she wants to, and she refuses to listen to anyone accept for me period. It pisses my partner off, but I find it to be adorable honestly.

My family has always owned Beagles (and Beagles only) since I was born. Every beagle that we have owned was goofy, loyal, gentle and friendly, but you are absolutely right on the escape note. We ended up having to put special location collars on our beagles because they’d run off and explore. These dogs are honestly the best dogs you could ever hope to ask for, and if you’re considering one and have the right mentality and home environment for a pet, go ahead and pick one up. I promise you won’t regret it.

If you don't have a lot of dog owner training don't. You need to know exactly what you're doing and they need a lot of training.
You also NEED a dog gps like whistle or tractive. It's about $120/yr for those devices. If you can't afford that and 2-3hrs a day for them and have a dog background, you shouldn't get one. If you still want one, 4000 of them were freed from a lab in VA and they need homes

@@wilurbean Exactly right. People tend to just pick a dog on looks and they have no idea of the breed’s characteristics or needs. What’s worse is that they have zero knowledge of dogs. It took me 2 years of research and visiting breeders and websites before I decided on a Havanese. Other than being cute there is a lot of financial responsibility and time needed in caring for a dog.

We couldn't leave him at a kennel (long term doggie daycare) if we left our house for a long time because he would have seizures if he thought we had abandoned him. His eyes would also go black if we tried to take "human" food away from him. I'm 90% sure that he had severe trauma from abandonment issues, but I'm glad we were his forever home until he passed away :')

Few other facts about the beagle he didn’t mention:
    1. Like most hounds, beagles produce a very thick oil that can become incredibly smelly if they aren’t cleaned every couple of weeks.
    2. Beagles are a very loud dogs, and have a tendency to howl and yelp when excited, so you might have a miniature tie fighter running around your house whenever the mailman shows up or they catch wind of another animal.
    3. (I don’t know if this is just my beagle or the breed as a whole, but) beagles are can be a very tough and stoic dogs as mine has bounced back from practically every injury; from being hit by two vehicles, bitten by three cotton mouths, and survived a attack from a stray pit bull. The only serious injury sustained was from one of the vehicle accidents where he had his right hip leg was broken and they had to put some wire and a rod to fix and it hardly took him a few months to get right back on it to chase rabbits.

My neighbors have a beagle. Sadly it used to have very bad separation anxiety. It was also a escape artist because we often would suddenly have a dog in our backyard or front door. I love him dearly, but I believe he is getting old.

My uncle had a beagle. That dog wouldn't leave his side for anything. My uncle got in a little plane, RT was right there. Canoe? RT was the figurehead. That little dog even chased off a grizzly bear to save her human. He said she was lightning fast, biting at it's tendons on its back legs till she got its. . . . . Well, it was a boy bear so, fill in the blank. That bear took off screaming. She got a stick in her leg but besides for that, she didn't have a scratch. So much courage in such a small dog.

My sister owns a small beagle named Zoey! She loves to play with our goldens, but also loves to wander off and chase things like raccoons, skunks, rabbits and even our cattle. She always returns safely though!

They are "nose" dogs. Don't bring them on runs- they need to stop and sniff everything. But they do love to walk and are great addition \ motivation to get out and walk.

I have a beagle chihuahua mix, and she's incredibly protective of me, but also scared of every high pitched sound. Oven beeps, bells on a game show, voice box of a children's show, anything like that amd she's immediately shaking like a leaf, and running to hide. She's also very snuggly and loving, and a total introvert when it comes to other dogs.
    10/10 mutt, I love her

As someone with a beagle i can confirm that all this info is true. Just dont overfeed them, as they will eat until they suffocate.

As someone with two rabbits this made me soooo anxious please be careful mixing rabbits with other animals. Not only because the rabbit could get very scared of the dog but rabbits are very territorial and will fight eachother to the death.
