Hi Kurt, I watched this video about a year ago when I was just starting my comic. I didn't tell anyone that I'd watched a tutorial but people immediately noticed the difference in my colouring technique and were very positive towards it. Even though I've changed small details here and there to better suit my personal workflow I still largely use this method today and I just want to let you know that I really appreciate this video and it was really fundamental to my comic making process.
I have coloured self-drawn comics before and now learned that I knew literally nothing about colouring properly. This is so helpful. Especially the "colouring in context" will absolutely change the way I "pick" colours for anything. Thank you for your hard work in making these videos!
This is now my favorite ever art tutorial. I am serious. There are SO many useful tips and workflow ideas in here that I never considered. I didn't even realize how Hard Light worked before and that has been a game changer. Having your basic shapes on a 'select reference' layer is genius. Using the hue/saturation sliders to find your colors and having that on the quick menu (which I didn't even know was a thing) is Incredible. I opened up a file and started fiddling with things while I watched this and WOW it sped things up so much!
You don't have to hold shift the whole time! There's an icon in selection mode (the one with the plus) that automatically adds to the current selection instead of deleting it. As a one-handed artist, this has saved me a ton ^_^
Just finished watching this. Since I don't use Clip Studio and thought I had mastered all the "Basics" awhile ago, I didn't think I'd get much out of this. I was totally wrong. Great stuff in here that I can't wait to start implementing! Plus, a nice bonus in seeing the color-over of one of my pages at the end!
I'm currently using this method to color a single comic page I made as fanart for a story I enjoy. It was a good test to see what sort of effort goes into this kind of thing. I feel like I understand color so much better now
Great stuff as always Kurt. Your PS class got me started/hooked on color. This is interesting because I use CSP for Pencils and Inks but have avoided diving in for colors.
The amount of effort you put into your RUclips videos is simply amazing. It takes a lot of work to produce these (I should know). I think all of your viewers should purchase at least one of your courses to show our support.
Let me tell you something Kurt, I got an illustration degree in 2004 on full scholarship from the Cleveland institute of Art. A month or two after I took a head dive on a bike and got a traumatic brain injury that made it damn near impossible for me to break anything down by steps or plan etc...major cognitive stuff...anywho, I got help with those things over years and recently I still wanted to do Illustration so got a new computer and Wacom I got CSP for myself a while ago because I used to know photoshop and Adobe pretty well but I haven't ever touched CSP. Let me tell ya man this is a great jumping point for me.
@@colorwithkurt thanks man. My wife got me that course you offer the other day too. I was pretty damn sure my layer methods I used in the earlier days of digital illustration had to be antiquated by now but I just wasn’t sure how. You made it easy to realize there are better ways to work smarter not harder especially if you want to adjust anything later without redoing. That hard light trick is insanely awesome too. I already watch one guys process today in a rather nice painting and was like nope! If he went your way would have been cooler in less time. 💪 😎 ✌️
Super helpful stuff! I had read the Blue Flame as it was coming out, and just randomly stumbled across this video, which was a nice surprise; love your work!

Hi Kurt. Don't you find so very annotying not being able to toggle between regular lasso and polygonal lasso like in photoshop with the ALT key? I learn to flat that way years ago in your famous flatting video, and is a deal breaker for me not being able to do that in CSP. That's the sole reason I'm still flatting in PS. Have you maybe found a way around it?
Just purchased the course! I've been working as a part-time freelance artist for tabletop gaming for the past 13 years, but recently I took on some comic coloring and it's been a struggle at times to figure out the best way to do certain things. I've also been a Photoshop painter pretty much my entire career, but I do have the Clip Studio Paint subscription (for PC and iPad) so looking forward to learning the Clip work flow. Now, where do I get all them good brushes? :)
hi Kurt, quick question do you recommend inking all the pages prior to adding color? I am trying to write, sketch, draw, ink and color my own comic and need a tip :)
Hi kurt, i need your suggestion please. i've been a photoshop user and quite well versed on it on photo manipulation . I just would like to know if transitioning to clip studio paint is a good idea or not for painting? Or should i just stick to photoshop instead for painting since i alrready quite familiar with the workspace and tool? I've been thinking of buying your tutorial on udemy . But not sure which should i choose between Photoshop or clip studio paint for my painting workflow.. Thanks a lot for your help kurt.
Sorry if this question has been asked many times, I have the same settings for my fill bucket, lasso, etc. But when I fill the selection I made over another selection that's already been filled in with another colour, it always goes over the coloured area as well. I don't understand why it doesn't ignore the coloured areas like yours does. This makes me have to retrace the outlines between everything and leave gaps between each section. Please help?
Maybe a silly question - are you using a mouse or some other tool for drawing the selections? I'm finding it very difficult to use the lasso effectively with a mouse, and I'm wondering if that's just a matter of lack of practice, or if you are actually using a stylus or something a bit more precise.
Hello Kurt, using this video I was able to produce my first 4 page, full color comic and I'm really happy with the results. Thanks! I do have a question about final preparation for the printer. One thing I noticed when I printed my pages (I converted them to TIFF files in CSP) is that they were darker than they appear on the screen. This is understandable and, I imagine, a frequent concern given that the screen will be brighter and more colorful. Can you offer any tips for preserving/translating what is seen on the screen to the final printed version? Is there a final step that will lighten everything to compensate for the darker print (that wont "wash it out") or is that a correction that needs to be made throughout the whole process as color choices are being made? Maybe I need to adjust my screen brightness settings? Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for your help!
Thanks a lot. Clip Studio doesn't support CMYK properly so I'm not sure how I would go about trying that in Clip. I use Photoshop for that. As far as the darkness issue, chances are your monitor is too bright and or not calibrated properly. You might also be using colors that are too dark. That is a very common problem for beginner colorists. Here's a link to my Discord. If you'd like to post one of the pages in #technical-questions, myself or someone can tell you more. discord.gg/8zZ6FAQN
Hi Kurt. I visited your website to see about the course and it says at the top that there is a $30 discount from $50 but doesn't seem to reflect the discount in the cart? Is there something I'm missing? Really ppreciate your advice re the discount. Cheers Simon
Hello Kurt. This is a fantastic and informative video for CSP. The question I still have is do you have a video that explains how to prep line art that is scanned from traditional ink on paper and needs to be cleaned up before digital color? I am working from scanned art boards on blue line paper so those would need to be removed. Also, the ink is a little grey in some areas so needs to be made pure black. Thanks again for all the great content here. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to coloring my first comic digitally. Cheers!
Thanks a lot. Here's two different methods. From 3 years ago: ruclips.net/video/A0NJnar1vy0/видео.html From 6 years ago: ruclips.net/video/TaR51jvXgBE/видео.html
@@colorwithkurt Thanks for the quick response! I don’t have Photoshop but am assuming that CSP levels works in a similar way? I will give that a try. Thanks again!
@@colorwithkurt thanks for directing me to these videos. I'm still having difficulty eliminating the blue lines while retaining nice, rich black areas from the inks. It seems in CSP it's either/or. Is there a way to just target the cyan in levels like in Photoshop to completely drop it out?
Hi Kurt love your channel. Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question. When i go to convert the layer to opacity, it doesn't turn it to the transparency grid. Am I doing something wrong?
@@colorwithkurt there are no layers underneath. I was using the iPad now I switched to the computer and it worked like a charm. So that’s even more confusing
Hello Mr. Russel. May I ask. How do you know how much cost to a client, per page. I mean for coloring. 3 or 4 panels. just to have an idea. I am new, working with comic pages. thank you.
I'd say about $50/page is a good minimum wage. I've been doing this for ten years and shoot for $75-$100/page, but that's on the high end for most indie publishers. The companies paying less than $50 or less are exploitative in my opinion.
Hey man... Super-usefull channel. I was never into coloring until I stumbled upon your videos. Thank you for that... I have one question tho. Is there method for exporting PSD file with layers but in CMYK mode? Okay another one... What is the best solution for exporting CMYK files from CS for printing and to be sure everything is correct as we intended. Bless
Amazing as always. Sadly I can't make the referred selection work, got the same settings as you but it doesn't select the referred layer, is someone experimenting the same issue?
Is Clip Studio the same as Photopea?? I normally use photoshop and Photopea is slightly different from photoshop. Is Clip Studio more similar to photopea than photoshop
Thank you for this really helpfull video. I have a question: Is there a specific reason why you do not fill the shadow layer with 50% grey first? For me it is helpfull so i can colorpick the "opacity" i want.
Question: If there are same character in different panels as in 19:33 do they need different colour or the colours for the same character from last panel can be used?
I have my flatter use the same color for the same characters so they can be selected at once, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the color I choose will be the same I'm every panel. Often it is not.
Hey Curt, I had a question regarding the brush you use. When you’re coloring on the hard light layers and using a custom brush, what brush were you using exactly? I really like it and went to use it myself. This video has been very helpful for me and I have been using it as heavy reference for my illustrations and comics. Thanks!
Hello, sorry for the question but how do you switch from Lasso Tool to the Polyline without changing the tool? I manage to do it in Photoshop by pressing ALT but it doesn't seem to work on Clip Paint.
@@colorwithkurt Thank you for your response and also for all your videos. I learn a lot thanks to you. You are great, man (and your colorings skills are awesome)! : ) (sorry for my poor english)
Hi Curt, question... I work with CSP and I do my inks in 600dpi after that I go right into my colors. I have my characters/objects in their own separated folders. That way I don't flatten so I can move characters around without redoing the colors and everything else... . ... is this OK to do??? Presently I do my own inks, colors and balloons. Thank you stu
Photoshop. Affinity Photo is another alternative. I have an action in Photoshop that flattens all the layers and converts it to CMYK. It save as a TIF file for the letterer. I do know some people that are using the exports from clip but clip really doesn't support CMYK properly so it's a risk I'm not willing to take on published books.
Hey Kurt, I have been plugging away on a 4 page comic and completed the “FLATS” layers. When I started on the “BASE” layer for page 1, I realized that some of my selection areas from the “FLATS” layer had combined. After checking my settings, I realized that for the “ellipse” and “poly line” selection tool I had “add to selection” and not “new selection” chosen in the tool properties field (I had assumed that when I changed it for “lasso” it would change it for all selection tools, oops). So, even though there are combined selection areas in the “Flats” layer they appear to be separated because they are different colors (it didn’t make the combined areas the same color”. Is there a way to go in and separate those combined selections in “Flats” so that they don’t become the same color in the “Base” layer. Thanks!
Well, I think that took care of most of it. It does look like I unintentionally used the same color for different items on the “FLATS” layer (probably because I selected a color from the “color history” menu instead of choosing a unique color). Is there a way to unlink and recolor items on the “FLATS” layer that are currently the same color? Thanks again!
Hola Kurt! I had a question at 42:17.. is there a benefit to using alt+👁 to isolate then pick the color over using the “select color from layer” eye dropper subtool? Do you get a different color from that? Thanks for these incredibly helpful videos as always! I watch every single one!
@@colorwithkurt as far as I know, it works by ignoring the blending mode and opacity and selects the color directly from the layer, instead of what’s displayed on screen. It’s under the eye dropper tool.
at 17:59 u demonstrated how to use the selection tool and than u shrank it with the wand? how did u do it? thats the thing i dont understand, how do you select only the leg of the bed even if theres gaps in the lineart + u dont have the "closing gap" setting selected ( i tried to copy ur settings from this video for the bucket and the selection tools and i feel like i miss something) great video btw!!
The separation between the legs and the floor was already made. If your wand's selection mode is set to "select from selection," it will work this way.
@@colorwithkurt but the seperation is happening because of the different colors right? since the layer that acts as a "seperation layer" is only 1 layer. am i correct?
@@colorwithkurt Oh okay thanks! Is there an efficient way to lasso? I'm used to ps holding alt lasso and was having a hard time selecting. A client of mine demands me to be able to use csp because he's telling me that converting clip file to .psd causes some of the layers to rasterize.
The Fill tool is only filling one flat area of color inside the given selection. The hair was separated from the bg on the previous layer already in this case and it was already a different color, so I didn't have to worry about selecting it again. The fill tool isn't going to fill past one color with these settings. Basically uncheck everything on the Fill tool - sub tool "Refer to editing layer." That's the one I use.

Hi Kurt. I visited your website to see about the course and it says at the top that there is a $30 discount from $50 but doesn't seem to reflect the discount in the cart? Is there something I'm missing? Really ppreciate your advice re the discount. Cheers Simon
Weird! Where it says "Have a coupon?" on the checkout use csp20 It's the same code and should have worked anyway, but I'll look into it.
@@colorwithkurt Many thanks. Worked and I'm now enrolled. Great videos!

I don't think CSP has the same functionality unfortunately.
You could try asking on my Discord. discord.gg/SB3hVfyu
¡Gracias!
¿Le diste propina en un comentario? No sabía que eso era posible. ¡Muchas gracias! :)
is it possible to "lock" the quick access icons so the main icon doesn't change when you change the subtool icon?
Hi Kurt love your channel. Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question. When i go to convert the layer to opacity, it doesn't turn it to the transparency grid. Am I doing something wrong?
Do you have other layers on underneath? Or is your opacity not set to have the squares?
@@colorwithkurt there are no layers underneath. I was using the iPad now I switched to the computer and it worked like a charm. So that’s even more confusing
@@colorwithkurt how do you set the opacity to have squares? I have looked for videos and cannot find it.
Hello Mr. Russel.
@@colorwithkurt thank you so much for the answer.!! love your videos. 😁😁😁
Terrific!
Wait, did you do this on the OG iPad and it had like a beetle or blue beetle comic ?
I'm using a Wacom Cintiq 16.
How do I color if it’s already if it’s already colored?
Is Clip Studio the same as Photopea?? I normally use photoshop and Photopea is slightly different from photoshop. Is Clip Studio more similar to photopea than photoshop
Thank you for this really helpfull video. I have a question: Is there a specific reason why you do not fill the shadow layer with 50% grey first? For me it is helpfull so i can colorpick the "opacity" i want.
It's just as easy to pick a color near 50% gray to me and adjust from there. I'm just combining that step.
@@colorwithkurt Thank you for replying so fast. And Thank you for making this video.
Thanks for watching.
What is the brush you use to give shadows and stuffs?
Hey Curt, I had a question regarding the brush you use. When you’re coloring on the hard light layers and using a custom brush, what brush were you using exactly? I really like it and went to use it myself. This video has been very helpful for me and I have been using it as heavy reference for my illustrations and comics. Thanks!
Thanks! Can you give me a time stamp to when you mean?
Yeah! It’s what you started using around 39:20 but you mentioned around 39:40 that it’s not one of the default brushes
Ah sorry that's Frenden's Faux-to-shop brush from his megapack.
@@colorwithkurt thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Sorry for the late reply
Hello, sorry for the question but how do you switch from Lasso Tool to the Polyline without changing the tool? I manage to do it in Photoshop by pressing ALT but it doesn't seem to work on Clip Paint.
It's not possible in CSP.
@@colorwithkurt Thank you for your response and also for all your videos. I learn a lot thanks to you. You are great, man (and your colorings skills are awesome)! : )
(sorry for my poor english)
Thanks so much! Glad to hear it.
Can you do clipping layers in clip studio paint?
Yup.
If it works for you, it works. What do you mean by "OK to do?"
OK to do ... what I mean is does that make the file size too large to work with vs's your way? I do save the final version in a jpeg.
Should be fine.
Thanks
Loveky work. How do you convert to CMYK?
@@colorwithkurt Yeh, I use Affinity Photo myself (after doing all the work in CSP.) Thanks for taking the time to answer. Great channel!
Thanks!
Make sure the Tolerance setting on your wand is zero. That might be your problem. Although I might not understand your question haha
@@colorwithkurt Aha, I think that’s it.
Just reselect and change the color on the flats layer how you normally would.
@@colorwithkurt okay, I was just hoping there way an easier way than having to retrace the area. I'm on it. Thanks!
Hola Kurt! I had a question at 42:17.. is there a benefit to using alt+👁 to isolate then pick the color over using the “select color from layer” eye dropper subtool? Do you get a different color from that? Thanks for these incredibly helpful videos as always! I watch every single one!
I didn't even know there a sub tool for the eyedropper. I'll look into that.
@@colorwithkurt as far as I know, it works by ignoring the blending mode and opacity and selects the color directly from the layer, instead of what’s displayed on screen. It’s under the eye dropper tool.
Kurt? How do you import art in csp?
at 17:59 u demonstrated how to use the selection tool and than u shrank it with the wand? how did u do it? thats the thing i dont understand, how do you select only the leg of the bed even if theres gaps in the lineart + u dont have the "closing gap" setting selected ( i tried to copy ur settings from this video for the bucket and the selection tools and i feel like i miss something)
great video btw!!
The separation between the legs and the floor was already made. If your wand's selection mode is set to "select from selection," it will work this way.
@@colorwithkurt oooh ok now i get it, it was kinda confusing bc im used to see the "marching ants" thing on.
thanks for the response!
I still think you are misunderstanding. The separation between the floor and the legs was already there. There wasn't an active selection.
@@colorwithkurt but the seperation is happening because of the different colors right? since the layer that acts as a "seperation layer" is only 1 layer. am i correct?
Yes. The separation is different colors.
This video has made me realize how much time I lose/waste on the way I color.
I’m going to be making whole sale changes to the way I color.
What's the optimized setting for the tool shortcut keys? I'm an adobe photoshop user and the setting is confusing me.
I always just change all the shortcuts for the tools I use to right around asdf on the left hand. Same in PS.
Wait how do you hide the selections?
I already have your courses about coloring in adove photoshop, but, now i use csp.. Can u made it too?
I do have a CSP course on my site already. It's the latest at learn.comiccolor.com
@@colorwithkurt haa, thankyou...
Wait can anyone explain how he did at 15:20 for the hair, how he fill without filling the hat?
The Fill tool is only filling one flat area of color inside the given selection. The hair was separated from the bg on the previous layer already in this case and it was already a different color, so I didn't have to worry about selecting it again. The fill tool isn't going to fill past one color with these settings. Basically uncheck everything on the Fill tool - sub tool "Refer to editing layer." That's the one I use.
the saddest part about digital painting is that we cannot beat the devil out of it..
why did you stop using Photoshop in favor of Clip Studio Paint?
Reference layers primarily. I still use PS for creating the print files.
@@colorwithkurt Reference layers are huge time savers. Please share a video with your approach on that.
so you don't use Procreate to do your comics that such i subscribed for that reason.
I like Procreate. It's just not well suited to coloring 40-60 pages a month.
I subscribed to you off a procreate post you done but you don't even use it not sure if i will ever watch another device Tutorial on comics.
I would definitely stop watching all tutorials because of this. There's no hope.
I forgot to mention, and you'll be happy to know I do have a whole course on coloring with your favorite app. :) !!
