@James Phelps If the baby isn't groomed it can get hypothermia, same with adult sea otters. Their fur is what keeps them warm because they don't really have a fat layer like most sea mammals. But aside from the hypothermia, if mom doesn't groom her baby, it won't learn how to groom itself. Swimming, diving, hunting, grooming, where and what to hunt, baby sea otters are born with none of that knowledge and it's up to mom to teach them how to be a sea otter which is pretty amazing.
actually the reason she inflates the fur is to keep the baby warm, in the wild, air is the best insolent. the fur traps pockets of air which is what keeps him warm ... its also how every furry animal keep warm, its not the fur itself its the air trapped within the fur that keeps it warm

I could watch otters all day. They became my favorite at our zoo when I was 5 yrs old! I couldn’t tear myself away from watching them swim in the small underwater tank attached to their garden of eden 🙄.
