    Personally, I never hated Skyler. I can't say that I liked her, but she was more annoying than anything else. As for the Cartel having some kind of code where women and children are concerned, I have no idea. The Salamanca's clearly don't. As Bolsa said. "They are not like us."

  • @mathmexican4234
    @mathmexican4234 6 месяцев назад +14

    tbh there are some similarities to certain arcs of Skylar and Walt. In the beginning, Walt feels helpless and trapped, having to rely on the choices of others, which makes him feel small and worthless, so he takes power back in a skillset he has at his disposal. And now Skylar is feeling helpless and trapped. Walt is making the decisions and she has no power, so she uses whats at her disposal to make her feel powerful and gain control.
    And I wouldn't put much stock in those most hated lists, because freaking Emily from Friends is at the top as well lol. all she did was fall in love with Ross then have him say the wrong name at the wedding, then ask her not to be friends with the woman whose name he said instead of hers lol. There's got to be either a bias of simply how well known a show is, or just thinking of some moment people don't like and choosing the person. I guarentee nobody they talked to on that survey sat down for an hour to go over every character in popular media that is bad and thing of someone they hate the most.

He hoped that once she gave up on the idea of getting him out of the house, she would just kind of resign herself to her fate and accept the money. This episode has a lot to do with why Skyler is hated. She is offered two different opportunities to get away from Walt and his actions, and turns them down, choosing instead to cheat on her husband with another dishonest man who claims he is committing his crimes in order to protect his family. The show is presenting Walter as a villain, and according to Anna Gunn, who plays Skyler, believes they are presenting her as a relatable victim and voice of morality in the family, but what they are showing us is someone who only wants to do the right thing on her terms. The show is presenting Walt and saying "here is a bad guy" and we accept that. But with Skyler, they are saying "here is a good guy," and that is just not true, so we resent it. Also, because Walt is the protagonist, the implicit agreement between audience and show is that we put his evil deeds to the side to examine him more objectively and to root for him against antagonistic forces, as long as those forces themselves are bad. People love The Godfather movies because the Corleones go up against other crooks. They like the movies where the family goes up against good guys much less. They root for Tony Soprano for similar reasons, and even his non-mafia victims are generally shown to have stumbled into his path through their own weakness or greed. But Tony Soprano and Michael Corleone never get into shootouts with the police, they never have cops assassinated unless they are corrupt. Because the agreement between the show and audience is that you do not ask us to root for a bad person against good people. It also means that anyone who goes up against the protagonist had better actually BE a good guy. You send a dirty cop or a hypocritical politician after the protagonist criminal, they are going to be hated. And that's Skyler, an inattentive wife, who nags and whines and blames him for things she has no proof of, who does not take an actually moral or defensible position against Walt, while at the same time, depriving him of his family. If she was morally clean and took away the kids and ruined his illusion of being a good father and husband, that would make her the hero for most people. But by refusing to help the police or Hank, by being snotty to Hank and dismissive of Walt Jr, Skyler puts herself in bad guy territory. She thinks Jr is mature enough to decide to reject his father's name, and indulges him, without regard to how hurtful it is to her husband, but she refuses to tell him the truth about his father, even after it is clear that without those facts, he will give character testimony on Walt Sr's behalf and visit him without her permission or knowledge. That's not only hypocritical, it's stupid. Viewers will forgive a lot for a competent character, they will accept a lot for a character who does the right thing, but they will not put up with the bullshit of someone who plays the victim, claims to be the good guy, but does a lot of shady shit there own self, while getting in the way of the protagonists.
    It's the same deal with Jesse's parents. Because Jesse is the protagonist, lots of people dump on them for not being nicer to him and not being more sympathetic to his plight. The difference is, someone in Jesse's position does not get there without burning a lot of bridges in the past, whereas Walt, when the show opens, is working two jobs, for low pay, to support Skyler and their children and her only interest in his working is to complain when it interferes with her social plans. Objectively we know Skyler is right in the first two seasons to be suspicious of Walt not being present or available to her, because we know he is cooking meth. But she does not, and she acted the same way with regard to his being made to stay late at his job by his employer. She was nagging him, in front of their friends and family, when he had a legitimate reason to be late. Like the boy who cried wolf, she exhausted her credibility, and when she's actually right, no one cares.

    I forgot this episode came so soon. I love Skylar's lawyer's response, it's dead on, no bullshit. She's probably even seen a number of previous cases where the spouse was a criminal or dangerous but her client wanted to keep that part quiet while still getting their share. And she knows it doesn't end well. As I said last vid, Skylar is not becoming EVIL like Walt, but she chooses to become an accomplice to a meth dealer because she's afraid to lose her station. Watching her realize she can't just get what she wants without giving up the fantasy is darkly hilarious in an admittedly cruel way. So since the legal system can't help her on the terms she insists on, instead we fight with: pettiness 😂 And great reaction to The Line haha.

      Idealistic characters give false expectations. They paint a black-&-white perspective of good & evil.
      But who dictates what’s good or evil? The majority? One person?
      That’s why RPG games are great, you can side with one of two groups. And each group has members that mean well, & other individuals that can do some really deplorable stuff. And it all boils down to with who you’re willing to compromise with.

    She just trying her best to get the dude connected to horrendous terrifying people away from her kids. If he won't leave when she asks him to, and he won't leave even when she calls the cops and he stays to call her bluff about it, the best thing to do is make him want to leave by "cheating" on him. I don't think it's that unreasonable to be honest, and even at that point I don't even consider it cheating anyway. She's asked for a divorce, that relationship is over at that point

I think this show unfortunately had a large viewership of dudes who didn’t really grasp the horror of Walt’s devolution and didn’t see this show as a portrait of toxic masculinity, and Skylar gets targeted as a wife that’s in the way of the protagonist doing cool stuff. 🙄 I am loving watching your videos and the more sensible modern commentary bc a lot of the fans of this show when it was airing were not this thoughtful and didn’t see Skylar as a sympathetic character dealing with an impossible balancing act.

    I love Skyler as a character. She's so complex. She's a a bit of a Karen, but she's not a bad person at heart. She's hesitant to report Walt because of the kids, which is a noble reason. But I think she also desperately wants to avoid completely blowing up her life, which is absolutely what would happen if Walt gets caught. So she's totally powerless, just praying he dies sooner than later. If she were a stronger person, she'd turn him in. But her very human weakness, the desire to cling to her normal life, keeps her trapped in this position. And the only thing she can maintain any control is by doing what she did. It's such a brutal, unsubtle way to tell Walt, "You may have me trapped in this marriage, but I am NOT your wife." Anna Gunn plays it so, so brilliantly, too. So brilliantly that it made a majority of the fandom loathe her, even though Skyler is playing literally the only card she has left.

    Skyler lost me in episode one. The surprise party that Walter didn't want after he had worked his SECOND job and the birthday handjob that he also didn't seem to want very much (which she couldn't be bothered to pay attention to) were pretty despicable. Most of season one was her trying to manipulate Walt without any concern for his feelings, from the way she revealed he had cancer to the family (bursting into tears in front of their teenage son and forcing Walt to tell everyone) to the intervention, where she assembled the family to browbeat Walt into getting treatment and only wanted them to talk as long as they agreed with her. The party where she told Elliot about Walt's cancer against Walt's wishes. The stupid support group that you KNOW Walt didn't want to attend, where she complained about Walt going for long walks and not talking as much as SHE wanted. He couldn't even have cancer the way he wanted to.
    All of that, to me, is really revelatory about how she must have been for all the years of their marriage prior to this. I think she had a HUGE hand in creating Walter White, and was a big part of the reason why he enjoyed being a drug kingpin so much. That doesn't mean I don't have sympathy for her, especially as the show progresses; I don't even hold her affair with Ted against her, because by this point she's trying to seize back control of her life. But it is kind of poetic justice, given the way she treated Walt.

    • @the_crypter
      @the_crypter 6 месяцев назад +1

      Naah this is some lowkey incel bullshit. Walter always wanted a party he is like one of those edgy high school kids. We know on his next birthday even though he didn't say anything, he was expecting a surprise party, he was waiting for everyone to pop out and surprise him but nobody did and he was visibly sad.
      Have you never loved anyone ? I don;t understand how one talks about this like an AI chatbot, 'she burst into tear in front of her son to manipulate him' like lmao, she is crying because she is pregnant and his fucking husband is about to die from cancer and he won't even take the treatment and will leave her a widow, in debt with two childrens one of who is not yet born and another one who has cerebral palsy.
      Like this isn't some master grandplan by her unlike Walter, she just doesn't want her fucking husband to give up and die. Same thing with telling elliot, and the doctor.
      People keep saying various shit but the truth is Walter was in a dogshit place in life before the cancer is because he is a dogshit human being, as simple as that. We even have the showrunners telling how the breakup b/w walt and gretchen happened which was due to Walt's insecurity and fragile ego and treating gretchen like shit.

She's always been so understanding of her boss and willing to even help him out some, but never wanted to cut Walter enough slack to even hear him out. Then she does this. You hit it right in the head that it's such real life common decision making that people relate. Any guy who has been cheated on, who on the surface looked to blame for driving her to it when the reality is the guy she cheated with and moved in to is no better if a human being. Ted is only the better if the two because Skylar chose from the start to look at him as such and give hin the benefit of doubt and opportunity to explain himself that she refused to extend to Walter. And Walter technically was doing it for her and their family. It's easy for guys who have had bad relationships to really feel Skylar's betrayals and develop hatred for her. But it evens most of it out when you acknowledge all of Walters crimes that are much more heinous and have put the household in the exact danger that Skylar is only using as what if at the moment. Those twins were just in the house with an ax a day ago. They just don't know that. Us guys are also blowing past the way he lied and deceived Skylar right to her face repeatedly leading up to this. And let's cut the bullshit, Walts ego drives him more than his family does. I hated Skylar hard the first time around but I'm fine with her in the big picture. I can't justify her tastes however. Ted is a joke and will always suck no matter how you slice him.
