G Gundam was the first series I got to fully watch growing up in middle school as I didn't have cable at the time of Gundam Wing being aired, and for as hammy as it was at time I really loved it and its thanks to G Gundam that I even got into the moble suit series at all.
If you rewatch gundam 0079 they mention that the original federation mobile suits were only meant for land combat. The ability to fight in space was more of an afterthought. The zeon suits were meant for both since their territory was mostly in space
If you think so, then sign up for new Gundam pilot training project. If you ask if we develop such, then it is unimportant. You brain will be ready to operate this amazing project if it will be ready! MK Ultra signing out 0_0
Can you imagine gundam series combining bits of 8th ms team and operation stardust? Possibly the two best universal era side stories. I think stated this on one of your other videos but i do love gundam series more focused on the soldiers rather than some kid learning to pilot mobile suit for first time and is the main focus of series. Am i also the only one odd that war only last a full year...you think with how big the earth is and how vast it is between earth, the moon, and colonies, you think that it would last longer too. I might be over thinking things and trying to apply logic to this.
while 08th MS Team is one of my favorite Gundams, I can also see why someone would pick 0083 over it. it's definitely more streamlined and completely embraces the angle it's going for, aka, "Top Gun in space". it also has better overall animation and highly detailed designs.
Not gonna lie, 8th MS Team is easily my favorite entry into the Gundam-franchise, next to the more recent "Iron-Blooded Orphans" you mentioned. I'm much more into the grounded scenario&warfare and relatable character interactions, compared to the mopey-kid-melodrama and superweapon-spacemagicks of many other Gundam-shows. And I even liked the starcross'd-lovers aspect here well enough. Both characters were pretty likable and had good chemistry and I feel that it added a nice additional angle to the entire story. But the series definitely has a somewhat lackluster dub... I enjoyed it much more once I switched to the sub, which has some excellent VAs (funfact: Shiro shares his voice with Zelda's Adult Link... very obvious when he screams :D). Would love to see an "Oldtaku, New Tricks"-episode on IBO.
Yo, the female leads' name Aina was my grandmother's name. This episode was trippy for me just hearing her name peppered through out it; thank you for pouncing it right too - i have heard way too many variations of the name (some not too clean to say the least) . Had to check if it was spelled right too, and holy hell it was. Thanks for this episode and happy Holidays!
I saw this on Toonami and I really enjoyed this and sage is not kidding about that fight scene as well as the sequence leading up to it as there is palpable Palm sweat inducing suspense. I thought this was a great Gundam series and hope to get my hands on the Blu-ray
I've always liked the more grounded Gundam stories and that's probably the beginning parts of Gundam Seed and Iron-Blooded Orphans pulled me in. Almost no beam weapons, machine guns, melee weapons and all that. It really gives weight to the fights when you can see bullets ricochet off armor and shells hitting the ground.
Bennett: "not my personal favorite Gundam..." Me: "yeeeessss..." Bennett: "that title belongs to another OVA..." Me: "YEEEEEEEESSSSS....." *Bennett holds up 0083* Me: "FUCK YEAH!!!!!!"
The One year war took place on all fronts both in space and the earth! Which means both sides needed Mobile Suits on all fronts. The Mobile Suits you see in this series on the ground type which means the mobile suit aren't going to be built the same way.
Seeing how vast and dense the jungles are in Vietnam I would say that it would be very hard to find a robot that large, more if it camouflage with the environment, if you look from the air you wouldn't known the difference.
Dude Stardust memory is your #1 Gundam pick. You sir, have great taste. Stardust is in my top 3, 8th MS team is #2, December Sky/ Thunderbolt #1. Great review man.
I disagree with the little nit-picks and hang-ups Sage has with the series, but his description of the major strengths and weaknesses are spot on, with the exception of the final conclusion: War movie and space opera do not mix. It may not be easy, but I think they do mix, and the praise Sage himself espoused to the show demonstrates this. I think 0080 demonstrates this as well.
Gundam's aim is to show how close to fascism that space opera is, in that the genre is colonialist. I would suggest reading Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, which is similar in themes to gundam.
@@CosmoShidan I will have to check it out, you aren't the first to recommend it to me. As for the thematic criticism of Space Opera as a genre; I guess I can see it, considering many of the Tomino directed series specifically emphasize the misery rather than the triumph. As for Anti-Colonialist messaging, I guess Zeta would exemplify that the most, and that Char's near genocidal ideas in CCA are a direct result of the impact the major political forces had on his life; the Zabis, the Feds, the different factions of the Titans, etc.
@@Superhrnet Space opera is generally a western in space, as it uses a space setting and planets as a stand-in for the USA as an uninhabited frontier. This in turn is perpetuating the American frontier myth, that the US was uninhabited when it was already settled by Native Americans. And yes, aliens are a stand-in for Native Americans. The original series is anti-colonialist in how the Federation imposes its will over its colonial subjects that we see in the first 13 episodes much like the USA or Britain were doing in the 19th and 20th centuries.
After 00 I've had a hard time enjoying other Gundam as much. It's like a distillation of all the best parts of all the other shows, trimmed down to an extremely manageable length, with a really good soundtrack.

I love 8th Ms team....excluding the true ending. I remember Stardust Memory fondly but i forgot all of it aside from the mobile suit having a portable nuke attached. :)
18:39 No need to explain. Stardust Memory is my favorite too. The first MG 1/100th scale Gunpla I built was the GP-01fb. Ive since built the GP-02, GP-03, and GP-04. Which wasn't in the anime, but is till bad ass.
My favorite's still G Gundam because of how gloriously campy it is, and the fact that piloting gundams directly like what Pacific Rim later did goes a very long way in helping to justify why the hell you'd even bother making a giant death robot a bipedal human.
it’s basiclly space robot wrestling which is why it’s the best. Yes there is melodrama but it’s not trying to preach to me some trite philosophic point about war. Bitch all I want is to see shining gundam and the other alliance gundam s best the shit out of devil gundam American history x style.
I remember really loving the ascetic of this show, the main Federation MS are cobbled together bullshit, all the gear has a palpable layer of rust and grime and dirt to it, It just really sticks out when compared to other entries.
The only thing that I remember about The O8th MS Team was the Vietnam war feel to it that I thought was so damn cool, in a strange way it reminds me of Full Metal Panic at least the dark war parts of that series.
By far my favorite Gundam series. I absolutely hate “the special” that crops up in most of these shows. And I love that these are just “weapons of war” and they have a huge support staff to keep these things up and running on the front lines. Really cool to see a “realistic” take of fantastic tech.
I remember being lukewarm to _08th MS Team_ since I thought the whole "fighting is wrong" message Shiro had halfway bugged me. The story of the Midnight Fenrir Corp. from the _Zeonic Front_ ps2 game would make a great OVA since they win every battle they fight and score some impressive victories (even getting one over Whitebase) but in the end, none of it matters since they weren't the "right" battles. I'm surprised you didn't mention how the original director died halfway through the series. That definitely accounts for the change in tone and story in the latter half.
Couldn't agree more especially with his own declaration during his introduction to kill the Zeon soldiers and end the war, due to his colony being gassed. Somehow that's all negated because is infuated with a girl on the opposite side.
16:19 - 16:26 Why do I get vibes of Oblivion (2013) at the end of this series? Especially with that close up on Shiro smiling. "I am Shiro Amada... And I am home."
This is my favorite Gundam series. I loved how it was a more grounded look at the price of war especially, but OMG the action scenes are so good! Especially EZ-8 vs Gouf Custom.
I remember this playing and I remember watching it, but I remember nothing about it. It wasn't even bad I don't think (watched it on Toonami lol), but it played during the years of my life I've purged 90% of from my memory
having not really watching much of the show, i kinda got the theme of the show just by seeing stuff and how the mobile suits operate, i was pretty much right that it was Gundam Vietnam
Oddly enough, this was my FIRST Gundam series. I had no idea what the war was about or the previous series, but the story alone kept me interested and got me into watching the rest and boy...there was so much to see
No need to justify, Sage. Stardust Memory is my favorite of the Universal Century line too. ^u^ Only other one to be in my tops is a side story called "The Blue Destiny" and that's mainly for the technical aspect of the suits.
You are right that mobile suits are design for space combat first in mind and that terrestrial combat hinders them. But they have addressed this issue in universe by making several models and variants better suited for the role of ground combat and able to get around without being THAT obvious.
Just watch 08 MS TEAM my god it was an amazing experience. Haven't watch anime for a good while and this one really really made me grateful. Also awesome review!!!
very nice to see this as this was the gundam that got me into gundam after this I watched everything toonami aired and I couldn't get enough glad to hear it actually holds up even if it is wonky here and there and has a bad final episode that I've never seen
nothing like a good old fashioned Gundam series to get you loving anime again. Is that 0083 Stardust memory that's your favorite? Cause it happens to be my fave Gundam! :P
One of my favorite things about this was the ED song which was cut on Toonami but it starts with Shiro reading a book and then when it ends, he turns towards the camera looking mad about you "spying" on him and throws the book at you. xD It's really funny because it's so random.
Fun fact: The space colony Shiro was on was gassed by Cima from Stardust Memory, which is the start of her arc. Ironic how her actions leads to what was Shiro stopping Zeon's new prototype super weapon the Apsalus. Also, Aina is one of the best girls in the Gundam series along with Mora, Sayla, and Rain.
I remember liking 08th MS Team back when it aired. Surely based on these clips certain aspects haven't aged well, but I wouldn't mind rewatching it after so long.
I was really excited for the Gundam series when Iron Blooded Orphans came out, but it really dropped the serious tone and darker atmosphere it had built during the first few episodes. Luckily not long after Gundam Thunderbolt came out and is easily my favourite Gundam series hands down.
Fuck yea! Stardust Memory! that one has been my top favorite Gundam since i first saw it, i can't fucking remember if it was on Toonami or Adult Swim. I have a soft spot for Wing since it first got me into Gundam and it was my favorite for a long time until Stardust Memory. I was a big Metal gear fan so a Gundam story dealing with a Nuclear warhead lauching mobile suit that goes against some sort of treaty hit all the notes for me to love it. Fun fact for MGS fans. Gato's japanese voice actor was Solid Snakes voice actor.
Well done. Hit every nail on the head. Love the 8th team, but it did shoot itself in the foot. Wish there were more like it. Thunderbolt kind of came close. So can't wait to see your review on 0083. Good one too.

My favorite Gundam series. It took me years, YEARS, to find the entire series.
G Gundam was the first series I got to fully watch growing up in middle school as I didn't have cable at the time of Gundam Wing being aired, and for as hammy as it was at time I really loved it and its thanks to G Gundam that I even got into the moble suit series at all.
The fight Sage mentioned was actually #1 on a Watchmojo list of Mecha battles. It even topped the final battle of Gurenn Lagan!
If you rewatch gundam 0079 they mention that the original federation mobile suits were only meant for land combat. The ability to fight in space was more of an afterthought. The zeon suits were meant for both since their territory was mostly in space
And Festivus...Don't forget Festivus XD
Its for the rest of us
Gundams make every war fun.
If you think so, then sign up for new Gundam pilot training project. If you ask if we develop such, then it is unimportant. You brain will be ready to operate this amazing project if it will be ready! MK Ultra signing out 0_0
Unless it's War in the Pocket.
Too bad teenagers and children nearly ruin Gundam.
geardog24 Tell that to Usso, Judau, Amuro, or Domon
XxnamcoxcapcomxX
Well kids and teenagers that act they don't belong in that situation
Real ones will break down or toughen up
Or died
This is the best time of year because of your series, Sage.
Thank you so much for making these.
The 08th mobile suit core is using mass production G class Gundams. These were reserved for units that had advanced piloting skills.
The only Gundam series I could ever really get into, and I still love it.
while 08th MS Team is one of my favorite Gundams, I can also see why someone would pick 0083 over it. it's definitely more streamlined and completely embraces the angle it's going for, aka, "Top Gun in space". it also has better overall animation and highly detailed designs.
*chanting*
Unicorn... unicorn. Unicorn! UNICORN! U N I C O R N !
I agree. THE best fight scene in Gundam, but a collection of the rest are amongst the most visceral and excellent in the franchise as a whole.
I saw this on Toonami and I really enjoyed this and sage is not kidding about that fight scene as well as the sequence leading up to it as there is palpable Palm sweat inducing suspense.
I thought this was a great Gundam series and hope to get my hands on the Blu-ray
One of my ALL TIME GUNDAM SERIES IM AAAAALLL OVER THIS
I've always liked the more grounded Gundam stories and that's probably the beginning parts of Gundam Seed and Iron-Blooded Orphans pulled me in. Almost no beam weapons, machine guns, melee weapons and all that. It really gives weight to the fights when you can see bullets ricochet off armor and shells hitting the ground.
Agreed. Beam weapons are great and all, but they're almost always one-hit-kill wonders, which really takes the meat & potatoes out of a fight.
Bennett: "not my personal favorite Gundam..."
Me: "yeeeessss..."
Bennett: "that title belongs to another OVA..."
Me: "YEEEEEEEESSSSS....."
*Bennett holds up 0083*
Me: "FUCK YEAH!!!!!!"
18:17 He was so shock at how terrible a shot the Main protagonist was he just gives up on his life in search for a better isekai world. XD
0083 and 8th MS Team were two of my favorite Gundam products. Really great OVAs.
watch Zeta Gundam and 0080 also.
Watched a few episodes of this. One of my favorite Gundam series of all time
Thanks for reviewing this-my favorite Gundam series that’s basically the best of the series, if not the best mecha series ever
Sage reviewing two of my favorite Gundam series back to back? Tis' certanly the season to be very joy. :)
14:03 I LOVE THAT GUY!!!, he was actually one of my favorite voice actors to play venom, and im not gonna lie even in kiddy or tween crap, he can get a good laugh
Thank you, Sage, for doing this OVA. It is, hands down, my favorite Gundam series of all time.
Platoon Gundam
One thing that always leaves me floored by Gundam is its use of music. Even the bad series can utilize music pretty well.
@@asher8754 G Gundam does have a brief moment where it covers the anti-war message, but it's more of an add-on and it has an environmental spin on it.
I remember really loving the ascetic of this show, the main Federation MS are cobbled together bullshit, all the gear has a palpable layer of rust and grime and dirt to it,
It just really sticks out when compared to other entries.
Really cool to see a “realistic” take of fantastic tech.
i HOPE this goes well. MS Team is still my fav Gundam.
I prefer Zeta Gundam a little.
16:07
That has to be the best executed Saitama meme I've ever seen!
#NotSpaceNazis thanks for that Sage, needed that chuckle.
Oh hey James didn’t know you stopped by here
I like that Sage can point out flaws of this OVA so much :D
one of the best soundtrack in any Gundam series!
Missed opportunity Bennett: you could have said joke "Ever had a Vietnam flashback."
This is my favorite Gundam series. I loved how it was a more grounded look at the price of war especially, but OMG the action scenes are so good! Especially EZ-8 vs Gouf Custom.
08th MS Team is seriously my favorite Gundam series
I remember this playing and I remember watching it, but I remember nothing about it.
It wasn't even bad I don't think (watched it on Toonami lol), but it played during the years of my life I've purged 90% of from my memory
having not really watching much of the show, i kinda got the theme of the show just by seeing stuff and how the mobile suits operate, i was pretty much right that it was Gundam Vietnam
Oddly enough, this was my FIRST Gundam series. I had no idea what the war was about or the previous series, but the story alone kept me interested and got me into watching the rest and boy...there was so much to see
Aww yeah, we're getting Stardust Memory this year! Thank you, Santa Sage!!!!
No need to justify, Sage. Stardust Memory is my favorite of the Universal Century line too. ^u^
Only other one to be in my tops is a side story called "The Blue Destiny" and that's mainly for the technical aspect of the suits.
You are right that mobile suits are design for space combat first in mind and that terrestrial combat hinders them. But they have addressed this issue in universe by making several models and variants better suited for the role of ground combat and able to get around without being THAT obvious.
This is the best Gundam series of the whole Gundam franchise. The physics of the mobile suits are the most real and the story line is also too real.
When are you going to do an episode on great teacher onizuka
Fun fact: The space colony Shiro was on was gassed by Cima from Stardust Memory, which is the start of her arc. Ironic how her actions leads to what was Shiro stopping Zeon's new prototype super weapon the Apsalus. Also, Aina is one of the best girls in the Gundam series along with Mora, Sayla, and Rain.
I remember liking 08th MS Team back when it aired. Surely based on these clips certain aspects haven't aged well, but I wouldn't mind rewatching it after so long.
8thMS Team will always be my favorite. I love realism with a dash of fantasy. Oh and the Guff fight scene is fucking cash money!
It is a good series. Still alot better than today anime.
The battle with the enemy ace. That episode is the best of Gundam.
Well done. Hit every nail on the head. Love the 8th team, but it did shoot itself in the foot. Wish there were more like it. Thunderbolt kind of came close. So can't wait to see your review on 0083. Good one too.
14:15 I also recognize his voice from the John tucker must die multiple choice commercial. "You bet you should lie your butt off!"
Last Resort. I watched the 08th ms team when I was in college. Then I saw last resort in 2003.
Yuri is amazing and he's probably my favorite character after Ghinius. Darren Norris has great range.
