The moment when Jimmy breaks down inside the car is when he realizes that people like him or the girl who got denied by HHM will never be accepted in this world. From his perspective, this society will never give them a second chance, they'll always be labeled as "Slippin' Jimmy" or "the shoplifter". He tried his best to avoid it and got stepped on all the way through, so from now on he'll embrace Slippin' Jimmy, but with a slight change in the name (s'all good, man).

The real tragic part is that it's not even really true in his case. He was accepted at Davis&Main, and he was doing fine at his own place - Wexler&McGill. But he couldn't let go of how Chuck's judgmental nature made him feel, and he couldn't adapt to what was expected of him.

This is so true on the show as well as the "real" world on so many levels. It makes me want to cry as well. As far as Chuck is concerned no matter how good of a lawyer Jimmy is, and how decent a person Jimmy becomes he will never good enough to breath the same Perfect air that Chuck sucks in every moment. Chuck loves Jimmy as long as he does not forget his place. Jimmy is trying to communicate the painful fact that Life is never fair.... no matter how hard you try. We could write a book about the intricacies of their relationship.

From Kim's perspective, I think when Jimmy gleefully admitted to her that he'd tricked those suckers in the hearing room, she reacted like it was a slap in the face. From where she sat, Jimmy was sincere with the things he said about Chuck. At that moment, I'd say she was happy with his "heartfelt" testimony and felt like he'd perhaps turned a corner in his life. But then she found out it was all a ruse. It was one thing for Jimmy to trick all those people in attendance who didn't know him, but she knew him better than anyone, and he tricked her too. That was an eye-opener.

The trick to a good performance is to use as much truth as you can. The reason why Kim will stay with Jimmy is that she still believes all the sad is true and him being arrogant afterward is him trying to not feel hurt over Chuck's death, which still affects him, obviously.

Not sure why Kim was surprised by that reveal, though. Jimmy LITERALLY SAID OUT LOUD that he doesn't think about Chuck and that he doesn't miss Chuck. Those were Jimmy's own words in the previous episode. Did she think he was lying or something in that scene? No, clearly she didn't know him the best if she didn't remember that basic confession from him in the episode before this one. Kim was hoping for something that wasn't going to happen.

Jimmy at long last cries because after seen some young persona like him being judged by all cuz of past sins, and after telling her those kind of inspirational words, he's still down, he couldn't rise above those who judged him. He still has the same car from the begining. He is not a winner.
    That breaks him forever.
But in the speech he stops reading Chuck's letter cuz it would have been Chuck saving him. He use his own words. He saved himself. He became a winner by his own hands!
That is why when he became SG he is in power! He is the man. And he will not look back, never.
And that's why he, in his Gene persona, still remember his SG life, when he was the man!

When Jimmy and Chuck briefly worked together on Sandpiper, they looked like an absolute badass duo of lawyer brothers... but then Chuck reveals that he doesn't think Jimmy deserves to be a lawyer and that Jimmy never mattered much to him. And then Jimmy spites Chuck by continuing to be a crooked lawyer and exploiting Chuck's reputation to become a lawyer again. There is no love anymore, just bitterness and apathy.
*"Things are fine the way they are.* Hey, I don't wanna hurt your feelings, but the truth is *you **_never mattered_** all that much to me."*
*"I don't think about Chuck,* okay? *I don't miss Chuck.* Chuck was alive and *now he's dead and **_that's that._** Finito.* Life goes on."
Those are the words from the McGill brothers about how they really feel about each other. It's not because they were shady lawyers, it's because they could never meet each other's expectations and understand one another. Not even the greatest piles of money in the world or the most solid legal documents could EVER change that.

The scene where Werner was being told the gravity of the situation he put himself into was actually mirroring the moment Gus wanted Mike to kill Walt. The only difference was that Werner was a humble man who did a stupid thing, rather than being an egomaniac amd only protecting himself, he called his wife telling her to leave but accepting his fate that he naively put himself in. Walt called Jesse only to have a good guy like Gale killed in order to save his own ass lol. Btw, his name also comes from Werner Heisenberg the guy Walt also named himself after.

  • @redblobdude
    @redblobdude 4 года назад +43

No! The primary emotion inhabiting Kim at the end is neither disappointment nor intolerance, it’s sadness. She has kept up with Jimmy’s ability to act and perform until now, even demonstrating her own abilities at times, and she does her best to not let her emotions affect her judgement. In that moment, she felt betrayed, she was the sucker who was crying, who, just for a moment, thought that Jimmy was letting out what she thought he needed to let out for so long now, only to realize it was too good to be true and that she doesn’t know him anymore. She still loves him, as tragic as that is, she won’t be able to dispose of her feelings for him just like that, but now she sees him the way his brother saw him, as a lost cause, and that realization absolutely destroys her. She has stuck with him for so long trying to undo the trust issues that Chuck instilled into him but she knows now that he has accepted the label his brother put on him out of spite.
She’s not going to leave him for this, I guarantee, but it’s 100% self destructive for her to stay with him. But that’s not her fault, you shouldn’t lose respect for her for that because that’s just how much she cares for him. And she knows that without her, Jimmy would absolutely go of the deep end so Kim would never do that to him. This is why she’s such a likable character, because she’s the kind of partner we all want but don’t deserve.

    That episode is SO great!
That first scene really sums up everything Jimmy/Chuck related. Chuck has always been jealous of how people like Jimmy because he's funny and all, even if Jimmy isn’t the most competent.
Even if Jimmy is butchering the song people are having a great time but Chuck can’t help but try to 1up him, and show how technicalky superior he is.
That court scene is so ironic because Jimmy couldn’t have been more insincere, but now that he's patting his older brothers back, he's perceived as honest/real. They were really smart to trick us into thinking that first shot was his current appeal because, both times, the law wouldn’t consider him worthy without his brothers approval.
Also, that scholarship thing was great because it contextualises how the law perceives outsiders/people with a non perfect past(like Jimmy), which is reflected in all the shit he's going through.
I think to me, this might be the best BCS episode yet!

I am sure someone has already brought this up but Bob Odenkirk said he never knew how to play the character of Jimmy and then this season he just got it and was totally comfortable. I wonder if it's because he started out playing Saul and the closer he gets to Saul as a character it is much easier for Bob to understand. And of course because he plays 3 different "types" of characters as 1 man. His acting is phenomenal!

  • @oggyreidmore
    @oggyreidmore 4 года назад +7

Jimmy was doing "The winner takes it all" by ABBA for karaoke, but later at 12:50 when they are singing "thinking I belonged there, playing by the rules" those are lyrics to the song, but they aren't together like that in the actual song. If you notice in bed Chuck is singing and Jimmy is drunkenly following slightly behind him singing as well. Chuck is,either consciously or subconsciously, basically having Jimmy say "thinking I belong there, playing by the rules" saying he doesn't really belong as a lawyer.
By the way, the original ABBA song is about someone who planned out a good life with someone, comes to realize that future isn't going to happen because they don't really conform to the rules, their relationship is over, and now fate will decide the winner and loser, judges will decide the outcome, and winner takes it all, and the loser will fall. DAMN this show is full of symbolism!

The last thing he would want her to be doing is snooping around in the general area as that would probably be a shortcut to a bullet in the head. Better make sure she's as far away as possible. Been watching you guys for quite sometime and have enjoyed your reactions to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I’ve been waiting to see your guys reaction to this finale since you began watching it due to how this ends and how closer it gets to Breaking Bad. This finale is huge for Jimmy, Kim and Mike. Not much to say other than, It’s all good man.

How long before Nikki and Steven realize that Kim is never going to leave Jimmy?

In Breaking Bad, the moment when Walt let Jane die was, in my opinion, the moment when Walt crosses the threshold that separates a good person from a bad person.
I think that Jimmy just crossed that threshold in that last scene. Same with Mike when he shot Werner.
Most of what Jimmy has done so far wasn’t only for his benefit. He doctored those documents for Kim, he broke into Chucks house because he felt betrayed, and he sold drop phones in the pursuit of getting a new office for him AND Kim. I think he’s about to unleash his selfishness now.
He’s taking Chucks advice. Don’t bother having any regrets!

We spent the whole season waiting for the moment that Kim will walk away from Jimmy, but as we see in the final moments of the episode, Jimmy (or should I say "Saul") walked away from Kim. He's done asking for help. He doesn't need her. The winner takes it all, and Saul will be the winner. I fully expect to see Saul and Kim face off in a battle of the law in Season 5.
Anyways, since you're caught up with everything, why not a suggestion? I think you guys should react to The Wire, it's supposed to be Breaking Bad levels of good.

    Jimmy: "Hold my beer."

Mike's true super power is being a senior citizen. No one expects a senior citizen to be that dangerous

There's a nice scene in the first season where Chuck like tucks in Jimmy as he's sleeping/gives him a pillow, etc etc.

When I first watched this I thought Jimmy was FINALLY letting all his guilt over the Chuck situation out and yet... it was all a lie. I believed it. I wanted to believe he had it in him, and there's moments in the episode that make you believe it's genuine but god dammit.

You may have noticed that most of this season, Gus is shown seated (or from the back with a stand-in). Thats because Giancarlo injured his leg skiing. They had to film many of his scenes after the Season wrapped principal production.

That ending is the best ending to a season finále of a show that I'll ever see. The thing we've been waiting for for 4 seasons is finally arrived (Saul). And yet, the anticipation of all the is about to happen overwhelmed me. That last line from Odenkirk -- and slow pan away from Kim, as if Jimmy was leaving her behind -- was just the most perfect way to introduce Saul to us. Couldn't have been any better.

Honestly and I know I might be in the minority on this, so far I think this show is even better than Breaking Bad. And I LOVE Breaking Bad. But this show manages to create such incredible tension only with character relationships and dialogue its such an accomplishment of writing, acting, directing and editing.

Also, remember the "is this when he becomes Saul Goodman" phase? right now episode uno i think :D.

Those "Winner Takes It All" lyrics cover the theme of this episode (and Saul Goodman in general) pretty damn well. It's an excellent choice for the karaoke scene.

I'm most looking forward to the black and white flash forward that (if they keep to the same pattern) will begin season 5 episode 1. Remember that in the last one (which is Saul *now*, not in the past) he was recognized by the cab driver from Albuquerque.
