Funny enough, my favorite palette cost me $0.82 at my local thrift shop from the plate section. It's a ceramic version of one of those plates that have walls in the middle for picky kids who don't like their food touching haha (don't we all remember those days). I went back there 6 months later and they had ANOTHER one so now I have two so I can clean it when I feel like it lol.
I watched your video yesterday and happened to browse the ceramic isle at good will. I found 3 ceramic palettes from Japan in perfect condition, two ceramic cups for water with my favorite scripture on it. I have been searching for a while for a better quality palette. I paid $5
Totally agree with your existing favourite palette. I have 2 like that, one for my Schminke paints and one for my W&N. Just the right number of spaces for paint and lots of mixing space with the extra clear removable section 😊
I want Mijelo. I understand why the one with flimzy top design like this- to protect paints from collecting dust while allow air flow to avoid molding. This is why I am still debating Mijelo it might grow mold in Florida. Does anyone has a mold problem with Mijelo?
Fun tour of pallets old and new. I do have butcher trays, enamel ones, and love them for large mixing. Your favorite 18 well plastic is mine too! I have 3 of them. LOL, thanks this was fun and informative!
Have been focused on watercolor painting for about a year now so I’m just a beginner. I heard ceramic is better than plastic. I am happy to hear you like plastic which is all own. The palette I currently use the most does not have a separate mixing area. Thanks for the insight.
Hullo Emily, Nice selection of palettes. I would offer this insight, Put tape on the side of your palettes and write the paint colors even brand if you mix brands or pigment numbers if your not brand specific. You can also use the lids for naming as well as your swatch sheets! Easier to get more info down on the swatch sheet too! I prefer the metal ceramic coated Butcher trays, If you drop them they do not break and better for those of us who may be a bit more clumsy! They travel quite well too! Have you ever looked into the James Gurney pattern for a Plein Air set up? It is free and easy to make your own and put your favorite painting palettes as well as favorite papers too! He has several wonderful videos here on RUclips!
This is a great video! Love the plastic 18-well Mijello palette! I have my M. Graham set in that. I found two 10” square ceramic plates at Home Goods that I love to use as mixing areas or temporary palettes for trying new colors. Plus they stack after the paint has dried and I can use the “palette dirt” to paint with too later. 😊👍🏽🖼️
Great video! I found one of those thick glass plates that goes in the bottom of your microwave at a thrift store and have been using that. I painted the backside of it white. 😊
I’ve tried lots of different pallets too and the mijello 18 well is also my favourite for watercolour. Well designed, portable and a lot tougher than I expected. Mine has been dropped on hard tiled floors several times and it’s still in great shape.
I like a large flat ceramic dinner plate with a short raised lip! It’s cheap, roomy and portable 🎨 my favorite is from Target and it cost a whopping $5. But dang, I’m so tempted by that butchers palette!
I am addicted to palettes I think. I have way more than I need, some I haven't even put paint in yet. Thanks Emily, loved the video, but now I want to buy a couple more. LOL
I just found a set of stackable fondue plates in my cupboard that were left by a previous tenant. White plain ceramic with lots of wells for condiments, they might be just the trick.
Have you tried the Mijello triple deck palette? It's plastic & wonderful. Holds around 42 colors, doesn't take up a lot of room on your desk with lots of mixing room. Very cool.
I think the second palette from jacksons has more a dust cover, than solid cover. I think so far from observation of other artists, the Geoff Kersey porcelain paletter with porcelain lid is best.
Would love if you did a video about the 18 colors in your go-to plastic pallette. I want to invest in about 18 professional colors that are great for both portraits and landscapes but I'm having trouble narrowing it down in both brand (I plan to do a mixture of brands) and pigment.
Fabulous palette tour! I love your Jackson’s 19 well palette. I have the cheap Joes version and love it! I have the larger too many well version and what you said really hit home. Too manyWells means too many colour choices that can get confusing and overwhelming. Also I seldom use many of the colours I loaded into some of those wells years ago and now have begun to dig them out ( such a waste! ) I prefer using primary colours of all values and temps and mixing my own secondary and tertiary colours. That porcelain butchers tray was beautiful! Ouch the shipping must have hurt all the way from the UK. Fun video! Love your channel. That self portrait looks amazing too! Share with us when you have completed it please...
every time i research palettes i come back to the one i use which is a modified/hacked koi sakura watercolor palette set. i cut out the extruded plastic pan set, put a thin piece of sheet metal in the bottom and attached magnets to half pans filled with DS paints. the inside of the lid and the removable 5 compartment palette tray is plenty of space for mixing and can easily move them around.
Emily, thanks so much for that brindle fur tutorial on the boxer on your paid membership. I hope you'll consider doing a fluffy standard poodle and more brindle pups as the fur is so interesting! Thanks!!
I have a comment on the small Jackson palette. I use change out colors on that smaller palette a lot and I have a heck of a time cleaning out those little corners. Probably just me, but I can't get all the paint out of the corners and it contaminates the new colors I want to put into them.
I love the flower palettes. I have several (they're "self-lidding" if you stack them, though they still collect kitty hairs and dust if you leave them too long). When I saw the butcher's tray, I braved my way into a warehouse dump store (Ollie's I think) and found one for like, $2! I use it, and easy clean up, but I store my tubes in a fingernail polish things (but tight fit; those have to go), and I pour by brand into the tin palettes (full pans, rip out the metal holder and line full pans up to go in half pan space with magnetic tape; fits 22 but doesn't work too well except for storage). Mainly I use the full pan tins as a testing guide for the tubes, but I tell myself I can pull the fuIl pans and stick em in some kind of a plein air "set". 😄 If it ever stops being winter, that might work!
Thank you for the video 😊 One question : how do you prevent a plastic palette from beading? I have tried using stick glue (put a thin layer and then remove it with a cloth) but it is not a permanent solution. Anything else I can try?
You can wash it with soap and water with a scrubber to help the plastic not be so slick. Just using the palette for a few days should solve the problem, too. 😊
Do you have a list of the colors in your typical palette? I like the fact that you limit the number of colors, it can get to be overwhelming given that there are so many colors available.
I have that five circle palette, and I use it for the schmincke aqua bronze colors, of which there are five (and for some reason I bought all five...no one needs all five😂😂😂).
Oh man, I related so hard to the whole, "but this palette only has 5 circles, and I use 6 primaries...." My ocd is so exactly the same for things like that
Ok, maybe I’m in total lala dreamland here, but here goes. What if there was a palette (either ceramic or 3D printed) “engineered” with a turntable function with dual tiered sections for the artist to create a ColorWheel palette. That way they can have primary and secondary wells for warm and cool primary’s, with the secondary mixes. I see it in my head, but I don’t have a 3D printer, or ceramic kiln in my studio! It would be heavy, definitely just a studio luxury, but wouldn’t it be cool? I’m hereby claiming the idea of it doesn’t already exist. 🤓
"Colours are supposed to be in the circles" 😂😂😂👍👍👍 You have just made my day. And by the way, I totally agree 😊
Great video, your opinion is valuable because it is so balanced. There are plenty of second hand ceramics at thrift stores, maybe try there first.
Great idea!

That’s amazing! What GREAT finds!
I use white bathroom tiles. Even cheaper. And I don’t fret about dropping it. A big factor for me.
I started with a John Pike and soon learn to hate it. Too cumbersome. Love those ceramic pallets!

It’s really the perfect size!
Great - I too struggle with "my favorite" palette. Glad to see your choices. Thanks.
You bet!

Thank you for this. Useful
I love ceramic palette, thank you for sharing with us Emily!
My pleasure!
The “it’s not okay” moment made me fall in love with you Lmfaooo. I felt that moment. Im the same way!!! I wouldn’t be able to use that palette lmao.
Hah hah! This made me crack up! Thanks for watching!
I am addicted to palettes I think. I have way more than I need, some I haven't even put paint in yet. Thanks Emily, loved the video, but now I want to buy a couple more. LOL
They ARE fun!
Mee tooooooooo! I think I need to downsize and sell a few, but I can't bring myself to do it...
I think if you run your brush over the brush rest you could remove an access of pigment fairly easily. ...just an idea

Thanks for your kind comment! So glad you enjoyed the video!
Enjoyed this video. Very helpful.
So glad!
At times, I have used a plain white plastic plate, especially when I am trying to paint something using only two or three colors.
This was awesome! Thanks Emily! 😊 I just ordered some brushes from Jackson's and I might have to go back for that round palette 🎨 😅
Glad you liked the video!

You are so resourceful!
What was the name of the etsy store where you got your custom palette?
Emily, thanks so much for that brindle fur tutorial on the boxer on your paid membership. I hope you'll consider doing a fluffy standard poodle and more brindle pups as the fur is so interesting! Thanks!!
Poodle--yes! I need to paint one!
"...the OCD in me..." lol

Helpful comment! Yes, one more reason to go with rounded wells. 🤷♀️ Have you tried using an old toothbrush to clean the palette?
@@EmilyOlsonArt I will try that today. Thank you!
Excellent review. Lots of good points.
Glad you enjoyed it
That 18 palette that is your fab is mine also. It's perfect. I have many of the same ones you have, lol.
Yes, agree! Perfect size and amount of colors!

I jst found your channel. I got a Mikasa round platter at a local thrift store for $1. It's called the Samantha, which is also my daughters name.
In tesco they do a very large flat rectangular white ceramic plate for 5 euro.
Perfect!
I bought a large white porcelain tray at the thrift store for $2.
Do you have a list of the colors in your typical palette? I like the fact that you limit the number of colors, it can get to be overwhelming given that there are so many colors available.
I don't have a list on RUclips--I'll need to do that!
I have 4 plastic palatte and I use 2 ceramic plates 🍽
I have that five circle palette, and I use it for the schmincke aqua bronze colors, of which there are five (and for some reason I bought all five...no one needs all five😂😂😂).
Such a nice little palette!
Oh man, I related so hard to the whole, "but this palette only has 5 circles, and I use 6 primaries...." My ocd is so exactly the same for things like that
😆
Always interesting to watch the artist's supplies. Don't you use the metal palette ? If it's 'yes', why ?? Thank you for your haul video. 🙏
I use metal palettes when they are pan paints, but that's the only time. Glad you liked the video!
@@EmilyOlsonArt thank you for your return ❤️

I will be watching for your opinion as to how well they work for you.
I just use a cheap plastic one from the dollar store since i usually forget to clean them and i know i would prob break a ceramic one lol 😀
Good solution! 😄
great tour but you didnt say which new one you liked the best
I use the Mijello 18 well palette the most! :)
I love ceramic! Don't really like any plastic palettes.
First!!
