Old breitbeil are indeed some elegant and beautiful tools, with a lot of variations according to the smithy, region of origin and time period. I have 5 of them so far, luckily here every now and then they appear at fleamarkets. I got the cheapest one for like 40 euros ^^. They were valuable tools for their owners, so they are often in decent condition and got resteeled multiple times. Indeed it's not impossible to find a 1700s breitbeil in an old alpine barn, with intact socket and eye
Have you heard of Steve Smith from Maine? He runs Renaissance Timber, and does unbelievable work hewing. He also got his axe from downing arts! I believe the same one as yours. Very good choice that’s a beautiful axe and well swung.
It’s an amazing axe for sure! The results you can achieve with it are astounding! For hewn floor joists, I used to cheat and mill the logs on one side to give the floor boards a perfectly flat surface on which to rest. With this axe, that’s no longer the most economical option.
Dictum offers a comparable Breitbeil for about 440. Not quite as nice but also hand forged and fully functional. I'm afraid they only ship to european countries, though.
Nice, well worth the money. I bought a stubai right bevel last year for $155. I dont think i will be hewing quite as large timber. For $1200 i think it might be worth while to dabble in black smithing for personal needs. The experience and skill will be invaluable.
I agree. I’ve done a bit of blacksmithing in the past, making nails for a project but never advanced past that. I will say that hewing timbers professionally makes a $1,200 investment more reasonable than if I was just a hobbyist doing it for fun. Thanks for watching!
Glad you found us! I’m thinking of forging a set of dogs for working with shorter, lighter materials. Most of the stuff I work with is heavy enough to hold itself in place but the fence posts and such could use dogs. I could definitely use more guns. Old military bolt actions are my favorite. Welcome to the channel and glad you joined us last night on the livestream!
Always secure the timber with dogs! The first axes you looked at were not that expensive then, if thats what you paid for this one. Try stropping the axe instead of stone.
Depends on what I’m hewing honestly. Most of the timber I work is heavy enough to hold itself in place. Since working with fence posts and smaller stock, though, dogs have become necessary.

I’m a little bit Irish and I’m most content when I’m pissed off at something or someone. An odd quirk, I guess.

Whew…for $1200, that axe should make you breakfast and speak Spanish - lol
Ah, it wasn’t so bad. It paid for itself in a few months. And if she spoke, I’d prefer French myself.
😂😂😂😂
Dude! I’m a big fan of your work.
@@HiraethMasonry Thank you ! :)
