Thanks for this one! It's always fun to see someone discovering Dirty Loops for the first time, and have their minds blown by this ridiculously competent power house of a group. They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their mid-to-late-thirties. Jonah (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production as his main subject. One of the reasons bass and drums are so tight in this group is probably because of Henrik's and Aron's insane practice routine during college, where they practiced together for 5-6 hours a night, 5-6 nights a week. 🤯 They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, as they felt a bit bored with the restrictions that comes with being a session musician, and never thought it would be anything other than that. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so if you consider checking out more of them, you could basically pick anything, and you more than likely won't be disappointed. The band name actually has nothing to do with loops or playing dirty. They got a list of name suggestions from a friend (another Swedish artist named Danny Saucedo) and they just thought Dirty Loops sounded fun and cool and picked that. This song was prerecorded, and what we see here is them playing for real, but it's not that sound we hear. Jonah said in an interview that he and Aron had to transcribe their own partly improvised solos from the recording, and learn them, to be able to play them back accurately when filming the video. He also stated that whereas he could get away with pressing the wrong keys here and there, Aron had to be a lot more precise, and apparently he didn't miss a beat. Complete madness! There is indeed percussion on this song as well, and it was played by a guy named Andreas Ekstedt, who's the one they usually hire to record percussion for them. The instrument being looped in the background throughout the song is a berimbau. If you want a deeper insight into their working process, there's a really good interview with Henrik in Bass Magazine. I can't link it here, as youtube won't accept that link for some reason, but if you search for Henrik Linder Songified it'll pop right up. He said the following about Work Shit Out in that interview: Bass Magazine: "“Work Shit Out” has a killer fretless, finger-funk bass line and it’s the most musically adventurous track on the EP." Henrik: "That’s how we conceived it, as a song that would evolve into a long improvised section with keyboard and drums solos. It started with Aron’s octave-jumping MIDI bass line. I wanted to simplify it a bit and remove one of the beats, but Aron insisted on his version, so I had to figure out how to play it because it’s a little unorthodox on bass. From there, Aron and I wrote the verse and the chorus, coming up with the one-note melody concept for the chorus. Then Jonah and Aron added all the harmonies. For Jonah’s solo, I stick pretty much to the root notes so he stretch and change the harmonies above them. It was a lot of fun to play the song live on a few gigs before the pandemic because it took different directions each time." I saw them live last summer, at a small outdoors jazz festival in northern Sweden, and they're just as maddeningly good live, so they do pull this kind of quality off for real, even if their records and videos are thoroughly produced (and they produce everything themselves, with the help of Simon Petrén, and Aron is the one doing all the video editing).
They were all working as studio musicians and started getting together to 'play the music that would get them fired.' So, yeah... a lot of smiles and bliss. They're totally playing things they love. Jonas majored in classical - Henrik and Aaron majored in jazz. I LOVE Dirty Loops. Best band of the era in my book.
Henrik is a very, very accomplished jazz bass player. The music is carefully crafted and pre-recorded in a studio. Not that it would matter much. They sound almost exactly the same live.
In several interviews of Henrik he said their drummer Aron wrote the bass lines. He explained their process. Jonah's vocals-he does all the backing vocals-and keyboard arrangement in particular is a unique signature of the band IMHO.

This is perhaps their most experimental track to date. They usually camouflage their outrageous jazzgasms in a shiny pop package that is very accessible even to casual listeners. Scratch the surface though, and there’s a nearly impenetrable complexity, all executed by some of the finest musicians alive today. ”Boy band jazz” is a term sometimes used to describe their music, because of the strong pop element and Jonah’s boyish but acrobatic vocals.

jsut before the actual reaction, first time here due to my favorite band Dirty Loops, but wanted to just say I enjoyed the intro immensely, is a great format to check out some wiki and some comments.....but also because I know you're about to be surprised happy! see you at the end.... end: really enjoyed what you picked out on first listen, yes I believe this is a full studio mix, with the music video here being done later, though my understanding it that Arron is just playing exactly as the recording in the video studio, and if you check out a live version of something at some time I think you'll understand they they are very close live compared to studio. Recommend "thriller" as your next one as you'll know the song and you can hear it get Loopified, but I think you'll both get musical nourishment out of any of their tracks new or old. My favorite track is "Follow the light" though. cheers from the UK

Bought their first CD second hand for 1 euro in germany 3 years ago, noone that I knew, and i know lots of competent music lovers, knew nothing about them. I was floored, didnt know that they were from sweden , thought they were a product of some east coast berkley school of music aces. Now suddenly they are recognized as the cream of the crop. Better late than never. Phenomenal!!
The name "Dirty Loops" really has no specific meaning, it was a name that someone else came up with and they decided to use it. They have used the name to call what they do to songs that they either create or cover "loopifying", meaning they start with the melody and then start the process of adding all of the other elements such as killer bassline lines, weird chord progressions and runs on the piano, and tight, nasty drum lines and fills. They take a typical benign melody and spruce it up, "loopify" it. On top of all the musicianship, Jonah's vocals are outstanding; they are some of the best out there. Seeing them in Salt Lake City in April this year, can't wait!
The bass player reacting to Henrik is gold. I'm sorry I don't know who is Chris and who is Sam but the metal bass player was in his glory. Henrik is a world class bassist. Im so happy you two found this band.

This is a music video dudes, this was recorded in the studio, that's how the overdubs are done. That's how there are layered vocals and timbales in there when there are no timbales on screen.
Great reaction - another Dirty Loops fan here. Please check out some of their other songs - I'm not going to suggest one in specific because you're in for a surprise each and every time. Though it would be fun to see you react to some of their lesser reacted to songs! And as some of the others say - they are equally awesome live. I've seen them live twice (2014 and 2023) and their energy/connection and skills are mind-blowing! By the way: "Was there make-up on this..." please check out the credits. There's a "baptiser" and a "badminton loser" too among other things - they often put some very funny things in there.

I heard that in Norway some years ago. I'm not a musician, but had a ticket for their concert in eastern Norway, a few miles from Sweden, on leap year date of 2020. Covid was creeping up and I chickened out, getting my money back from a guy who could drive home. Two weeks later everything locked down.
Pretty sure the keyboard/singer is looping key aspects. Like his main vocal, and a shorter version, and the percussion back track. It seems he recorded that live and looped it.
Love Dirty Loops. They are truly exceptional. I'd like for you to react to Senri Kawaguchi. One of the videos that demostrate her out of the this world talents is "See You Much Later". She is not from this world.
Beside the fact these guys are great musicians(an I mean really great), they are also accustomed to how to shoot a video clip, I saw countless video reactors who seem to believe this video is live rendition !..No. The audio we ear in this video had been recorded in a studio+ lots of studio works, then they play on it while shooting the video. Sorry , as it certainly appears obvious for a lot of viewers but apparently for some people it is not.
They first gain attention some 10-12 years ago when they uploaded videos where they did covers of Adele, Alphaville, Britney Spears. Needless to say they went super viral and more or less everyone from Quincy Jones to David Foster were singing their praises. Eventually David Foster took them under his wings as his like protégés. Nowadays they belong to Quincy Jones Productions. These guys are monsters their talent is out of this world!!
Dirty Loops is an aeronautical term for a plane touching wheels and immediately going vertical into a loop. Remember that these guys went to the Swedish version of Julliard.
You can tell the reviewers aren't fans of the keyboard solo... no, they will not work it into a blues tone! I thought it was a bit strange at first too but I've come to appreciate the genius that went into it and it has raised my appreciation for this style of music.
Guys you gotta watch the song "Diamond Ring" featuring Steve Vai. It's the piano player Jonah Nillson from dirty loops with a different bass and drum player and it's BAD TO THE BONE!
This is a studio recording, but they are so meticulous the videos look like they must be filmed during the actual recording. They're not. These guys are just that good, and what they play has THAT much intention behind it. Also, the drummer directs and edits their videos. And is responsible for composting many of their bass lines.
…yeah, Aron not just only composts ;) many of the bass lines, but I believe he also came up with that one-note chorus, and generally with a lot of stuff in Dirty Loops’ pieces. Jonah and his voice were not created in a lab, no. But almost. Both his parents were classical musicians, and to my understanding: they both led a choir.

The start of the solo is very Jan Johansson-esque, for sure, but towards the end or the solo there are many classical influences as well. Grieg and Tchaikovsky are the ones that jumps out to me, but there are probably a bunch of others as well. After all, Jonah did start out as a classical pianist, and comes from a family of classical musicians. Henrik has said in interviews that one of the reasons for their rather special sound is Jonah's classical voice leading in the harmonies.
There is only one steady continuous loop in the background other than the Background vocals , these young guys are master musicians , combination of jazz pop fusion & funk , you can’t find better musicians and the lead vocalist is untouchable, just a sick band.
Tip for reaction: Hasta que te conocí by and with Juan Gabriel in Bellas Artes / the venue´s name /. A fantastic vocal performación, a must see! Would be fun to see a heavy metal guy reacting to that.
Just a suggestion, you should make your picture bigger than the video. Imo the best reaction channels allow us viewers to see your facial expressions and reaction. Your picture size here makes it hard to see clearly. Im guessing most of us have seen the video and so we’re hear to see how much you love the music we love. I disagree 100%. I often switch out of a reaction video when the reactor(s) have their video too large. I vastly prefer this setup. Especially when they have a lyric video for us and they watch the music video (afraid of copyright violations)! As if I want to see a giant view of them react to something I can't see.

To me the vocals here are in quite a contemporary pop style, perhaps rooted in 20th Century like Michael Jackson, which there's nothing objectively bad about - it's just really not for me (same as some people hate opera singing or metal screaming, even though both require incredible talent). I came to think of The Police. Especially "Message in a Bottle". Isn't the fretless bass hopelessly out of tune? But it sounds good and that's probably what they thought too. Sting is an interesting musician, sloppy but it always sounds good.
Nothing is "hard to discern" if you know anything at all about drums and percussion. And referring to any of this as "goofing around" is an instant credibility killer. The great thing about this band is their preparation and attention to detail. Every note has a purpose. This is why they sound just as great live.

I’ve never heard boy band jazz before. That’s pretty funny 😂 I don’t think Hendrik fits the image though (maybe goth boy band)

end: really enjoyed what you picked out on first listen, yes I believe this is a full studio mix, with the music video here being done later, though my understanding it that Arron is just playing exactly as the recording in the video studio, and if you check out a live version of something at some time I think you'll understand they they are very close live compared to studio.
Recommend "thriller" as your next one as you'll know the song and you can hear it get Loopified, but I think you'll both get musical nourishment out of any of their tracks new or old. My favorite track is "Follow the light" though. cheers from the UK

Bought their first CD second hand for 1 euro in germany 3 years ago, noone that I knew, and i know lots of competent music lovers, knew nothing about them. I was floored, didnt know that they were from sweden , thought they were a product of some east coast berkley school of music aces. Now suddenly they are recognized as the cream of the crop. Better late than never. Phenomenal!!

The name "Dirty Loops" really has no specific meaning, it was a name that someone else came up with and they decided to use it. They have used the name to call what they do to songs that they either create or cover "loopifying", meaning they start with the melody and then start the process of adding all of the other elements such as killer bassline lines, weird chord progressions and runs on the piano, and tight, nasty drum lines and fills. They take a typical benign melody and spruce it up, "loopify" it. On top of all the musicianship, Jonah's vocals are outstanding; they are some of the best out there. Seeing them in Salt Lake City in April this year, can't wait!

This is a music video dudes, this was recorded in the studio, that's how the overdubs are done. That's how there are layered vocals and timbales in there when there are no timbales on screen.
Great reaction - another Dirty Loops fan here. Please check out some of their other songs - I'm not going to suggest one in specific because you're in for a surprise each and every time. Though it would be fun to see you react to some of their lesser reacted to songs! And as some of the others say - they are equally awesome live. I've seen them live twice (2014 and 2023) and their energy/connection and skills are mind-blowing! By the way: "Was there make-up on this..." please check out the credits. There's a "baptiser" and a "badminton loser" too among other things - they often put some very funny things in there.

I heard that in Norway some years ago. I'm not a musician, but had a ticket for their concert in eastern Norway, a few miles from Sweden, on leap year date of 2020. Covid was creeping up and I chickened out, getting my money back from a guy who could drive home. Two weeks later everything locked down.

Love Dirty Loops. They are truly exceptional. I'd like for you to react to Senri Kawaguchi. One of the videos that demostrate her out of the this world talents is "See You Much Later". She is not from this world.
Beside the fact these guys are great musicians(an I mean really great), they are also accustomed to how to shoot a video clip, I saw countless video reactors who seem to believe this video is live rendition !..No. The audio we ear in this video had been recorded in a studio+ lots of studio works, then they play on it while shooting the video. Sorry , as it certainly appears obvious for a lot of viewers but apparently for some people it is not.

Henrik has to be one of the most talented/skilled bassists on the planet.
They first gain attention some 10-12 years ago when they uploaded videos where they did covers of Adele, Alphaville, Britney Spears. Needless to say they went super viral and more or less everyone from Quincy Jones to David Foster were singing their praises. Eventually David Foster took them under his wings as his like protégés. Nowadays they belong to Quincy Jones Productions. These guys are monsters their talent is out of this world!!
All three if the guys have music performance degrees. Of course they are talented!!

Guys you gotta watch the song "Diamond Ring" featuring Steve Vai. It's the piano player Jonah Nillson from dirty loops with a different bass and drum player and it's BAD TO THE BONE!
This is a studio recording, but they are so meticulous the videos look like they must be filmed during the actual recording. They're not. These guys are just that good, and what they play has THAT much intention behind it.
Also, the drummer directs and edits their videos. And is responsible for composting many of their bass lines.
…yeah, Aron not just only composts ;) many of the bass lines, but I believe he also came up with that one-note chorus, and generally with a lot of stuff in Dirty Loops’ pieces.

Jonah and his voice were not created in a lab, no. But almost. Both his parents were classical musicians, and to my understanding: they both led a choir.
That was a fretted bass. He does play fretless also.

Keyboard was more like folk/ jazz in between. In the spirit of Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson ( listen to him!) . Not classical
The start of the solo is very Jan Johansson-esque, for sure, but towards the end or the solo there are many classical influences as well. Grieg and Tchaikovsky are the ones that jumps out to me, but there are probably a bunch of others as well. After all, Jonah did start out as a classical pianist, and comes from a family of classical musicians. Henrik has said in interviews that one of the reasons for their rather special sound is Jonah's classical voice leading in the harmonies.

There is only one steady continuous loop in the background other than the Background vocals , these young guys are master musicians , combination of jazz pop fusion & funk , you can’t find better musicians and the lead vocalist is untouchable, just a sick band.
The drummer sounds like DAVE WECKL as well.
Tip for reaction: Hasta que te conocí by and with Juan Gabriel in Bellas Artes / the venue´s name /. A fantastic vocal performación, a must see! Would be fun to see a heavy metal guy reacting to that.
Just a suggestion, you should make your picture bigger than the video. Imo the best reaction channels allow us viewers to see your facial expressions and reaction. Your picture size here makes it hard to see clearly. Im guessing most of us have seen the video and so we’re hear to see how much you love the music we love. I disagree 100%. I often switch out of a reaction video when the reactor(s) have their video too large. I vastly prefer this setup. Especially when they have a lyric video for us and they watch the music video (afraid of copyright violations)! As if I want to see a giant view of them react to something I can't see.

To me the vocals here are in quite a contemporary pop style, perhaps rooted in 20th Century like Michael Jackson, which there's nothing objectively bad about - it's just really not for me (same as some people hate opera singing or metal screaming, even though both require incredible talent).

Nothing is "hard to discern" if you know anything at all about drums and percussion. And referring to any of this as "goofing around" is an instant credibility killer. The great thing about this band is their preparation and attention to detail. Every note has a purpose. This is why they sound just as great live.
