    87” wide damn! I want to build a portal machine but I think I’ll start with a 64” width and hopefully end up roughly 80”. Definitely a badass machine.

    • @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix
      @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix  5 лет назад

      @@GBrewner the main issue with the portals on a Can Am x3 is the steering... when the portals are done i added the epowersteering unit which I was told would fix the issue ( it helped a little but not nearly enough ) which is not enough steering force and that shows up when you're in 4x4 on the trail and you just don't have enough strength to deal with the feedback from the trail to the wheel... what I'm going for is full hydro steering so there is zero feedback to the wheel and that would also eliminate the steering rack all together...
      i do like the portals and what they do but there are some things you'll need to do and some maintenance issues you'll need to just deal with

Just bought new RCV Pro Axles for my 2019 X3 on Gen 3 Portals. I can not finish reassemble until I get these little guys. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

      Ok good deal. I got my hands on a 2 seater x3 with same stock beadlocks you had with libertys. I wanted to keep the stock beadlocks because I think it will help with width some. I just wanted to double check with you to see if the stock beadlocks still had room over the portal rotors since there really a positive offset wheel.

    • @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix
      @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix  3 года назад

      They did springs in the clutch… while it doesn’t make the engine make more horsepower it gives you more usable horsepower from what’s there plus the engine can rev out another few hundred RPM which is where much of the horsepower comes from, The engine has not been touched but when they put it on the Dino it gets 25 more horsepower in the same test which I think the video shows… I just know there’s way more horsepower than somebody that rock crawls can ever use 🤪

    So I enjoyed this but have what may be a dumb question. I’m new to SxS having bought a 2021 XDS , kept it for a month and traded it for a 2021 XRC which I love. So my dumb question is what is a portal? Did you just make it wider? I have an enclosed car trailer and mine just fits as is. I can’t imagine going wider I’d not be able to take it anywhere.

    • @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix
      @ChrisLoomisDirtFlix  3 года назад

      there's no reason to do portals unless you are hard core into rock crawling... a portal lifts you up while keeping the suspension basically stock and it acts like a low geared rear end in a jeep ( it'll reduce your gearing by either 15% or 30% and really no rock crawler wants 15% ) and now mine is 87" wide so i have a deck over trailer that the deck is 102" wide, it works very awesome but it's going to cost so much to do it that you'll regret starting the project... you can look at my last video and see what it does... if you're still here reading and are interested in doing it i can tell you everything to avoid ( since i made every stinking mistake possible ) and now it works perfect and i love it...

      Charles Rager Absolutely not, it depends on what kind of rock crawling you want to do do you want to do stuff the size of bowling balls or 4 feet tall, I can tell you that we lost 15 miles an hour off of top end but I don’t care about top end speed I know it sounds strange but I rarely get over 40 mph

      well I've got to say it got much more difficult so i did some research and found a higher power steering motor so we did that and it didn't help as much as i was lead to believe ( but it did help a little ) and now there is a guy that is experimenting with a modified steering bracket that gives more leverage and it should also help some and then i have been speaking with a gentleman in Arkansas that has made a full hydro option as well as a hydro assist option and I'm positive that'll fix the issue... but I've got to say it's hard to deny the ride and performance gain with the portals but if you're not willing to go all in then I'd say don't do it
