  • In keeping with the University of Pretoria’s focus on evolving in line with the fourth industrial revolution, Libby has been ‘employed’ by the Department of Library Services as the first client service robot known to be in use in any university library in Africa. Our new 'colleague', Libby can provide library visitors with directional guidance and answer other service questions.
    Her features include:
    - ergonomic design fitted with the latest technology
    - 60+ sensors giving human-like awareness
    - 360-degree spot rotation and navigation
    - a 3D camera which can read gestures and poses
    - animated motion arms
    - voice localisation
    - facial recognition.
Her brain is connected to Watson, IBM’s question-answering computer system, which processes queries directed at her. She runs off Android-based software, which opens up opportunities for the Library to develop new and exciting client-facing applications. Libby, however, is not all work and no play: She can dance for you, play music, and even crack a joke here and there.
