- DIY wall safe to lock your valuables. Hidden behind a picture, this wall safe is a great way to store and hide things you don't want a thief to find. Easy to build in one weekend very inexpensively.

I just used an old Square D circuit breaker electrical box that I gutted. If a thief would happen to look behind our 16 x 20 wedding portrait in our bedroom he will "discover" an ugly circuit breaker box.
Actually that is pretty slick. You might even do better by "hiding" it in plain sight in a closet or laundry room.
Step 1. Already have a thousand dollars worth of equipment.
good thing you have an original million dollar van gogh painting to hide your chocolate stash!
This is why you install (2) in the wall safes. (1) easier to find with non-valuable stuff, and the (2) in a more hidden fashion. Once they find the one, they won't be looking for a second one.
Good idea!!! 👍🏻
Yeah but if they find the real one first and leave the decoy!
A robber will definitely try to steal that Van Gogh and will then discover your safe 😬😬
But then it will be kn lock for LIFE Time
Average thief doesn't have these tools they just looking for stuff under your bed 🛏️ or closet wallet tv shit like that he's must have knew it was there if he had the tools most likely
Thanks a lot for the idea...I cut out where I wanted to put a pre-bought safe and found the studs were closer than what I needed so I'll create one instead, thanks!
I made a couple of these in my vacation homes works great out of sight out of mind
That was a great idea, and done very well. Thanks.
To further hide it you could have painted it gray and stuck an electrician's "call for service" sticker on it.
Behind a picture. Nobody ever looks for a safe there.
I got the chills when you were drilling the slot for the lock catch with your hand on the other side.
Surprisingly I still have all my digits. :-)
Hey just a suggestion, you can set up painting so has rolling hinges in back so can slide painting to the side while. Opening and in fast access if for a firearm you do not have to remove it. Just an idea
That was fun. I've always quite fancied the idea of having a safe door on a wall and when you open it there's a painting in there. Anyway, the secret's safe with me mate. A very happy Christmas to you all and to all your viewers!
LOL! That's an interesting idea for a skit. Thanks for keeping my secret. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
“Original Van Gogh painting.” Lol. If that were true, they could take the painting and forget the safe.
Never hide your wall safe behind an original Van Gogh :-)
GandalfTheGreen that’s the point it’s highly unlikely it’s original but at the same time criminals are in such a frenzy to get in and out they might not realize🤷♂️
@@gandalfthegreen1827
Unless the wall safe is just a decoy and the real valuables are still hidden.
lol he was being sarcastic
I wouldn’t use any pictures of Van Gough original or reproduction, because it would attract attention and they would ultimately find the safe.
I built one and then camo painted it. now I can't find it.
“CAUTION HIGH VOLTAGE” would be a great finishing touch 😉
And then the kids go around bragging about the safe daddy made to hide behind a painting in your house :P
Hey, that's very cool, man. Reminds me of a clock I bought that has a hidden compartment.
A robber will smell that chocolate for sure. Great job and cool video.
Thanks for posting this video. I have considered a project like this many times and may still do it. I have the tools, and materials on hand (retired woodworker), just need some get-up-and-go. :)
Now that you know how to do it, get up and go :-)
Actually, the best ‘safe’ is one that is open. Out in the open, unlocked, easy for any robber to access, a stack of counterfeit bills and some imitation diamonds in it. They grab the money and diamonds and leave, you don’t confront them and they don’t confront you, and they soon get nabbed for passing counterfeit bills.
I almost stopped the video when I heard wood. I’m glad I didn’t it was very interesting and a good idea for things you want to keep out of reach. I may make one and you’ve gained a subscriber!
Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and subscribe! Tom
This is perfect for the "bait safe" location and hide my real valuables much more discreetly.
Great video. FYI, leave out the musac tho. Very distracting.
I think you did a great job 👍
I also agree with you that all wall safes are not very safe . proper placement is the best defense.
I have a couple of wall safes that are easily accessible but you would never find them.
Thanks. Nothing is safe if someone really want's to get in. Thieves generally want to get in and out quickly. They don't look behind pictures. :-)
And the kids go to school telling EVERYBODY "My dad built a wooden wall safe behind the bedroom door to keep money and drugs in". lol
You could use the locksmith trick of using lipstick to mark the latch position.
Should have put that priceless painting in the safe! When they steal that they will see the hidden safe!
Nice video but that is more of a lock box and not a safe, and no something I would use for a handgun or a significant amount of valuables. Concealment is a good idea.
I have seen many of the metal in wall safes. Put the best one in or put a homemade one it, it doesn't matter. Wouldn't have to bother with opening either one as the thief can tear drywall away and pry it from the wall easier than fooling with the door. The key to these is where you put it, not the safe itself. I agree a purchased one would give your belongings slight security in a fire, not much if its raging.
If American houses were built with bricks they would be much more secure.
That's why after you install a wall safe you wrap that wall with sheet metal screwed straight to the studs after that you use your drywall if somebody wanted to rip your safe out of the wall they'd have to take the whole wall down which isn't realistically going to happen during a residential burglary...
I guess you forgot about another important feature of metal in wall safes... some are fire rated. If you have a fire, everything in your wooden DIY safe will go up in flames. Oh, and most metal in wall safes come with a nice metal frame/trim around the outside, which helps hide any crooked cut drywall holes (unlike your silicone filled gap).
🤣👏🤝🏼
The laugh is on you. It's a RUclips channel. He's getting views. Some people might want to build something like this on the cheap. Obviously it isn't fireproof but I doubt he's stuffing it with 10 or 20 grand.
He can always just buy more chocolate at the store🤷
Happy new year and great video
That gray toolbox you have in the background I have the exact same thing sitting on my bench. not in as good of condition no tag on front wondering what kind it is.
It's an old craftsman -- given to me by a friend. I love it.
Nice video! What size boards did you use for the safe frame?
I used 3/4" thick pine boards. You can use plywood or solid wood. It's doesn't really matter. I used what scraps I had.
Great for thieves but not so good for fire.
You are not going to find a wall safe that is good for fire.
Should make one where if someone crosses the path of a laser inside it sends a signal to something such as your phone to alert you. Something that can be turned off by the owner too obviously so you can get in the safe
How do i avoid cutting through electrical wire? What if i hit my light switch wire 🤔
It only costs 5$ wow! But.. you need to already need 90% of the materials before you start... soo.....it doesn't actually cost 5$ now does it?
Nice
The safest safe is one you can't see.
This may be a stupid question, but how did you know there's no electrical wires there? How would I be able to tell at my house where wired would be?
Electrical boxes are screwed into a stud. Conduit (wiring) will usually go to this box from above or below the box. It's easier (not impossible) to build a wall safe into the wall (between the studs which are generally 16" apart) where there are no electrical lines interfering. So try to avoid a section of that wall where there is an outlet or plumbing or vent stacks. They probably even sell stud sensors that detect electrical and plumbing pipes.
Even if some burglars move the painting they’ll just assume this is a wooden utility box, and won’t waste their time breaking into it.
Love it
So hilariously…
I own a old home and a previous owner cut a hole in the wall and put a shelf window…I dunno.
I wanted to keep it for my shot glasses and such but I didn’t want it to be public or anything to fall. So I closed the one side off and my husband and I just set a Van Gogh over it.🤣
I’m kinda thinking I want to paint something and hinge it on and use magnets to close it. So I was looking for something similar.🤣🤣
#700 thumbs up 👍🏼
Why put a back on the box? The drywall already in place can serve that function and give it a little more depth. The sides can be glued to the back “Wall” to seal it in place using caulk or silicon.
You certainly could do that. The back is only 1/4". Not sure its worth the extra effort just to gain a small amount of depth. All your choice, this is one idea.
Not exactly a "safe" but still awsome
If someone wanted in all they would have to do in break through the drywall one the other side and a thin layer of wood
supercomputer2004 I am thinking about doing something like that but with electronic open instead of key. But the idea would be to have a gun hiding nearby, was out of sight and out of reach of kids. I wouldn’t use it so much as a safe.
You could pry that open with a butter knife tbh, it's a neat idea but definitely has no practicality beyond keeping things out of sight from the wife or kids, it doesn't take long to break a 5 dollar lock.
@@daniels1293 they have to know where it is to break into it
It's not so much for protection as it is for concealment. If it's concealed it's protected from a possible thief but still not protected from a fire.
good for all
Nice job. But could hear you better without that awful loud music.
How do you know ahead of time if there's electrical or plumbing behind the drywall?
They do sell stud finders checkers to test for both electrical and water. However, if you put the safe in a room on a wall where there is no plumbing or no electrical outlets, you are better off. Whenever cutting into a wall, I am cautious anyway, just in case. You could always ask someone familiar with electrical or plumbing work for their opinion.
@@AlleyPicked Oh cool, didn't know there were stud finders that did that. Thanks!
Yolo
good job
Music credit? Thanks
That intro only you and me and probably the 1.8k views you have will know about it 😄
rebal gaming make that 79k now 🤣
So the saw will destroy a metal safe but not the wooden one? How’s that work?
The point here is that a safe whether metal or wood is not that difficult to remove from the wall. The value is that it is hidden. This wood safe obviously would not offer much of a defense to a crook...but then most thieves do not take pictures off the wall. This is just a cheap option. I would not recommend hiding my life savings in it or any weapons. :-)
I'd be worried the safe just falls down the wall
JUST KIDDING only the lock cost 5 bucks. You still need the scrap wood and all the tools required to make everything plus the skill. good video tho. :D
Peter Mott I was thinking the exact same thing. That is not a safe. It’s a joke.
With $5 I might just be able to get some glue!!! Forget everything else!!!! Cool safe though!!!
You should shop at estate sales. I just picked up $60 worth of stuff today for $15 :-)
Tell me what valuables you will store in it on that interior wall so I can determine what size Pinch I need to kill the power at your house. Jk, great job.
LOL
Looks nice.... But too much trouble for average Joe just buy the metal safe at Harbour freight for 65 dollars
Maybe...But I like free better. Plus, using something that would normally end up in the garbage truck or scrap yard feels satisfying. :-)
Love your feciscious aattitude lols
Nice clean job. However, I would not call this a wall safe. Those little hinges and the wood box can be broken easily. This is more like a locking cabinet.
He said "u are gonna use at least 5 dollars" and its definitely enough for money and other staff
My landlord might object ;)
Is it fireproof?
Yes this was fireproof wood.
That was my first thought as well.Went to all the effort and a fire would destroy any valuables.....Spend a few bucks on a metal box, maybe even line it with fireproof sheet rock. Use a wall with hidden backside (closet, crawlspace, etc. to gain some depth)
Nice video, but aren't you tipping burglars off with this idea?
LOL!! So he thinks thieves wouldn't know about the "behind the painting safe location". :) There's been safes put behind paintings for over 100 years. It's shown in films for decades. :)
I actually thought this guy had a smart idea. (e.g. putting the safe in a hidden room...which would be impossible to be stumbled across accidentally).
It was only a suggestion...especially if it's just for keeping things out of sight or reach. It's up to you where you put it.
for just 5 dollars pulls out the 400+ dollar saw
You forgot to mention where you found the paint for free 🤪
more of a "hidden in plain sight small cabinet"
How to make a wall safe for american WOOD walls which are easy to cut out... many countries have stone walls
Unfortunately, many house thieves are professionals, so they know to knock down pictures from the walls, which will expose your home made safe. They also bring a crowbar.
That's all right. Tom's wife doesn't give him much of an allowance, anyway. His safe will only contain a few sheets of unused 220 grit sandpaper and a new pair of socks.
So that can't be ripped off the wall?
It can be broken into fairly easily but someone would need to find it first.
@@AlleyPicked I think a store bought metal one would have bin better
@@keepitthoro6768 I agree. but the point of my channel is "making cool stuff from junk" :-) Thanks for watching.
Not everyone has spare wood, hinges, glue, screws and paint etc ...so would have been nice to give an actual cost analysis as well, just in case. 🙂
Do you also want the cost of the table saw, drills, bits, blades, etc..?
It’s cool, was just saying might have been better just so show how to make and not say it cost $5 that’s all...great job in any case 🙂👍🏼
You are much better off with a lockable breaker box with fake wires running to it. or a flush mounted one in the drywall. No one thinks to steal out of a breaker box and its totally understandable why there would be a lock on it if there are kids toys around.
👍
You didn't use a level while cutting the wallboard?
Wood? Really? What about protecting against fire?
so obvious !!
How do we get a hole in the wall tho lol
Cut it
U , me and 62,986 viewers later
But your I can get through with the same thing sooooooo
Not $5 nor $4.38 or whatever. You used materials such as MDF and 3/4" lumber and hinges. These things have a cost, whether you have them already or not.
myitbos 1 a lot of DIYers or men in general already have most of what he used. Great Video
Hidden medicine cabinet,....nice but not a "safe"
American walls....try that in Europe...with all concrete reinforced walls
Whatever is seen on the 'net, isn't a secret.
Its not safe... its hidden storage....
This is a bad idea. Especially behind a so called painting. The burglar will take your painting and then use a hammer to get into your wooden safe.
Hideous wall color
There is nothing safe about wood
Build this safe for $5. Just have $40 of wood laying around, $5 spare hinges, a few bucks of shelf supports, some caulk and a $4.35 lock. What a crock!
Mine sadly cost $6
You got ripped off :-)
Not a safe. Can be opened easily
Not really hidden 😅
No one ever counts their time as worth anything.... GOOD biz, SMART biz, COUNT your time....that is what it cost you in the life line...
Perception drugs
Those chocolates tho 👀
First thing this is an awful safe... Your hinges are on the outside for 1 and for 2 you put a 10$ lock on it that can be picked be an beginner picker in seconds... Amazing idea bad execution...
Thats not safe! I can pull that out with a hammer.
Of course you can. Which is why I mentioned in the video that the reason to use this is because it is a secret. It is hidden and a thief entering your home would have no idea it was even there. Even a metal safe can easily be ripped or cut out using a sawzall.
@@AlleyPicked very true. The saying 'out of sight, out of mind.'
Something like this could go behind a painting, mirror, end table, the possibilities are endless. Great video!
Good ideas! Thanks for the feedback.

thats not even a safe more like a hole in a wall literally. there's no space to fit a weapn
