  • provides a quick and basic understanding of the various ports
    on a Cisco Router. An entry-level IT, Network, or Telecom professional. would find this valuable to know before their first assignment involving Cisco.
    Cisco makes up about 70% of the enterprise-grade data center connectivity equipment. If you're a IT pro, you're definitely going to encounter Cisco switches and routers.
    In this video, we demonstrate with a Cisco 1700 route which has a variety of ports - Console, Aux, Ehternet, WAN, and Voice (RJ-11).
    While Console, Aux, WAN, and Ethernet ports are all RJ-45, they are very different in the functionality. A common rookie mistake is to try to connect a network cable from their laptop directly into the Console port of the route.
    Console ports are SERIAL connections, they require a "Cisco console cable" and Serial connection on the PC or laptop.
    Likewise, WAN (Wide area Netwok) ports look much like Ethernet ports too. Again, completely different function. (unless the WAN just happens to be an Ethernet hand-off from a broadband or metro connection).
    Cisco uses a color convention to help tell the ports apart
    Baby Blue - Console
    Yellow - Ehternet
    Royal Blue - WAN
    Pink - Voice
    There are two other videos on another channel of mine which deal with entry-level cisco knowledge:
    1. Connecting a Console cable

    I have that Cisco 1700, pretty useless now because the only module besides the BRI interface you can upgrade to is a 10BaseT ....
    I ended up setting up pfSense on a VM instead of upgrading to a new router for my lab...

    what are the benefits? and how much would I get payed?

      hi Dylan.
      that pay varies widely and location plays a big part. Say at the bottom level, a beginner in Nebraska might earn $10. to start where as that same person in San Jose CA or Manhattan might make $20/hr or more!
      And, vendor certifications make a big difference (i.e. CCNA, MCSE,)
      But, in very general terms. Most beginners without a degree can usually be in the $13-$20 within the first year if they show initiative.
      An Intermediate tech who can go to customer locations alone is worth about $20-30 hr (again, location makes a big difference)
      Someone with more than 10yrs experience who's really good a customer-facing situations is worth $65k per year or more.
      Pay rates of 6-figures per year are not unheard of for seasoned techs who can demonstrate a history of producing results.
      I made a video that touches on this topic of entering into the field of Network /Telecom Tech

    What are the BRI and auxilliary ports do. I saw somewhere these two ports were mentioned too.

    • @DIYTelecom
      @DIYTelecom  3 года назад +1

      Haven’t used the aux port in ages, but from what I remember you could use it one of tew ways:
      1. It could be used to connect to the console port on another device. So this would allow you to move between multiple device from just one connection.
      2. You could connect it to a dial-up modem. And it would dial out to establish a console connection.
      BRI is just a type of ISDN connection used for the WAN side of the router. 😊

    +DIY Telecom You,sir,are getting a subscriber and a 'like'. I've been looking everywhere for someone to simply explain the router interface and cable ports. Most videos are just about what routers do and not how they physically look. Thank you. Do you have similar video for switches? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • @DIYTelecom
      @DIYTelecom  5 лет назад

      On most routers you should have a WAN port (on Cisco it has a blue outline) and a LAN port (yellow outline).
      The WAN connects to the internet service. The LAN connects to your computers (usually to a switch first). Hope that helps. 🙂

    Hello a query
    I have a cisco 1721 router and the front led ok does not stop blinking, the router fan does not turn on. The router has no dram memory.
    I have seen the manual and there is no error that I have, because the led ok blinks all the time, and the fan does not run, that could be the error, help me please

      Julio, sorry I don't know enough to diagnose your problem. I will say that if the fan isn't running when you first plug in the power, that's a bad sign. Good luck with getting that figured out sir. :)

    how many ports does the cisco router have?

    • @DIYTelecom
      @DIYTelecom  3 года назад

      Cisco routers come in so many different configurations they could have any number of ports. At the very least they should have 3
      1. LAN
      2. WAN
      3. Console
      But some models could have 5, 8 or more.
