Do not apologize for it was the Gaelic system that allowed them to be conquered although it was wrong what we suffered unfortunately the strong unit always took advantage of the weak divided. Fantastic lyrics I love this song Beautiful singing
No need now Sir, it's all done and dusted, like the Germans don't need to apologize for WW ll/Holocaust, we wish it could have been different of course...! But fate/destiny and the powers that be, at the time ordained a different path for us...we don't harbor hate and animosity, all the best!
I learned this song going to school many many years ago...I cry every time I hear it and this is a powerful beautiful interpretation of this outstanding ballad...*"Those in power write history. Those who suffer write the songs."*
Agin agin Im learning the words from when the mother played it by the (glorious and heartfelt ; and now teary my eyes) Claancy Bros and Tommy Makem. Tanks tank you I very much love your beauty band..oz girl of 61 years living ing in nz and very glad theither took me to see C B & T M live at Festival Hall in Melbourne when I was a teenybopoer ie pre teen or just teen. Beautiful Pauline! My dad used to sing this, never sober lol never the less a beautiful rendition with good old Damo. The ol fella was from Tralee, just round the corner from Dingle. Love watching your pub gigs on here. You and the other lady harmonise so beatifuly x
I used to listen to you on spotify, then was disappointed when many of the songs evaporated and I couldn't hear them anymore. I'll look out for an album I can buy properly.
Absolutely love you guys! I heard you on a Seamus Begley recording recently, and was blown away with that too. Would love you to sing on some of my stuff , if ye ever fancy it
Same writer, I believe - Thomas Davis - but different and distinct pieces. Some artists - notably The Wolfe Tones - have put extracts of the two together in a medley, but they are actually utterly separate.
Yes same writer, Thomas Osbourne Davis, a Young Irelander who sadly died at 29 or 30 from scarlet fever. He was a qualified lawyer but never practiced and he was a prolific poet!!!
Is it just me ... or did he sing @ 2 Mins-05 Secs in..did he change the lyrics "Sing, Oh! not even 'Enda's sons' disgrace could quite destroy their glorious trace......
STUNNING!, I am pretty embarrassed that I have only heard THIS now, (also considering I am Irish), of course I heard the song by other artists and in spoken form by Ronnie Drew, but this is first time I heard it sung so beautiful. I have watched this video already countless times and worked out the chords and most of the licks - now only if I could sing like an Angel
Mr Gentleman ..thank you kindly, but you are not responsible for Cromwelian history if awful horrendous maseqeur in Ireland, afterrall he beeheated Charles 2nd.. There are many, many songs. Some should be sung by women, some by men, some by either. The Spinning Wheel song. Belongs to women, because a man, could never do it justice and it would sound silly coming from the lips of a man. This, in my opinion, is a song to be sung by a man. I am sixty years old now and I have yet to hear a man tell the tale of young Eileen and this is the first time I’ve heard a woman sing this. It can be done, I can knit and a woman can do carpentry, but there are just some songs that sound better coming from the lips of a woman and some sound better coming from a man.
@@snipper1ie Understand what your saying, BUT, what if the singer WANTS to sing the song, and sings it so well? Please, we need less division in the world. Can't we all just be human first, and gender second, and if she wants to sing a song that's traditionally sung by a man, and vice versa, let's just go with it. There's nothing but praise for the ladies in the comments. If it's a song about some of Ireland's history, that sounds like a national thing, which involves ALL the people, not just 50% . 😤 Now I must go and calm down; will listen to some Dave Allen, the voice of sanity . 🤭 ✌️ G'day to beautiful Irish men and women everywhere!
@@Lee-nh5bb A body can sing what they want, when they want. Best of order, one and all. I did not say that women should not sing this song. They can if they want. It is just that a womans' voice, just doesn't have that crescendo at the 'awake, let England quake' bit. Likewise, a man can't really do justice to 'merrily whirring, spins the wheel'. You are only the second Leonie I have encountered in my life. The other being my cousin. I see you have the video of Margaret Gallagher. Each year a few friends and I go for the Barber's Birthday Perambulation on my birthday. Last year I had intended that we would visit Margaret, alas that wasn't to be, nor will it happen this year. I hope we will get to visit with her next year.
Never heard this before, its beautiful.
SUCH A MAGNIFICENTLY ARTISTIC RENDERING OF THIS CLASSIC SONG!
Great group singing a very special ballad wishing more to come
This is so beautiful. God Bless the Irish always!!
Fabulous, one of the most beautiful pieces of singing I have ever heard in my life.P.S as an Englishman I`d like to apologize for 800 years of ****
Do not apologize for it was the Gaelic system that allowed them to be conquered although it was wrong what we suffered unfortunately the strong unit always took advantage of the weak divided.

What beautiful singing and arrangement! If Lumiere never sang another song, this performance must go down as one of the best. Well done Damien too!
What a beautiful version of a great song.
Brilliant version of this classic song. The arrangement is superb and Damien Dempsey adds to it with his strong voice

Great performance by the two ladies.

Fab.
super ....
Subtle differences - but I actually prefer this rendition to the album version. Not much in it: both are very, very good.
"a nation once again" why is this potion not there?

@@alanbarrett8311 A nation once again seems to have put this song in the shadows. Quite sad honestly, this songs a lot better I think.

No - he sings 'even' in its contracted (poetic) form, 'e'en their son's disgrace''. It scans better than 'even' in the original poem this way, too!

It was written by an Irish Protestant. ☘

Lovely - but surely it was meant to be a battle-hymn?
I think it has greater poignancy this way. As so often in Ireland's long story, moments of hope were dashed. It works.

Dempsey brings this down,,,he is not up to their level,,
It's not a woman's song
and there had to be just one eejit with something bad to say!
