  • Part 6 of the Lilac I air layered in 2017. I was told at the time that it was a Poplar, but since realised it was a Lilac. This year it has had a bit of a disaster and it has mostly died back!

Nice save on this. Thankfully it grew a new shoot and not all was lost. Looking forward to seeing how this new part progresses!

Cheers, I think it will be a painful wait for this one. It isnt going to be doing anything interesting for a long long time

Nice save Broski. When trees die after years of the same treatment its such a mystery. I lost baobabs, and jacarandas this year that have been content for 6+ 🙄🤔🤬

If it starts to dry up/to die then roots are the problem usually, not enough air, pots is too small, or it's too wet. Either way, you need more air for the roots and more space.

It feels like that the rootball was so thick that it became hard to get water in the soil, especially the inside.

potentially, but then this would have been an issue over the summer and the signs would all be there. There where plenty of roots, but no more than any other tree, soil was also normal levels of moist and loose.
The problem happened over winter, so potentiality a cold weather thing, but i think what other people are saying here about how this species just seems to randomly do this type of thing is more likely the issue ...which is not what i want to hear as it probably means this species is not good long term

Cheers, i think it will be a good few years before we see anything better though :s

Had the same thing happen to a couple other species last year - so random! All you can do is move forward. If it happens again with the same tree, there might be something genetically making in unfit for bonsai conditions. Fingers crossed!

Cheers Sue, it sure is annoying. I guess time will tell us if it is a repeat offender or not haha

I was thinking Wrap the new around the dead?

I had a similar thought but instead of wrapping it around create a deadwood feature to give it a unique "life from death" look.

I thought about carving a groove and growing the shoot in that. but it wasnt very flexible/ it would have to be a decent size groove and i decided against it. i think it would look better in my mind that reality.

I think lilacs unfortunately just do this. I see this happen with lilacs in the ground all the time, where the older shoots die off periodically. In fact you often see people doing it intentionally, ie cutting out the older shoots to encourage the newer shoots which brings on better health and more blooms. It may just be a battle you will fight continuously bro, but I guess time will tell.

Cheers bro, i didnt know that and sounds like exactly what im seeing here ...Just confirms my suspicion that this species is a lost cause lol

I agree - seems to depend a lot on the variety. Some of my garden lilac clumps do it and others don't - super annoying!
