In this latest episode of Figuring Out Podcast we are in conversation with Byju Raveendran, Founder and CEO of Byju's, the biggest edtech startup and we have discussed:
-How did Byju’s become the biggest edtech startup?
-How BYJU's Became the Most Valued Startup of India?
-Why did Byju invest his own money in his startup?
-Why did they sponsor the FIFA World Cup and Cricket World Cup?
    -What’s happening with Byju’s employees?
BYJU'S was founded in the year 2011 by Byju Raveendran. He is India's youngest billionaire with a net worth of $3.05 billion as per the Forbes list of India's 100 Richest People (2020). BYJU's The Learning App was launched in 2015 and is currently noted as the most valuable startup from India with a valuation of $22 bn.
Coming from Azhikode, a small village in Kerala, Byju Raveendran was an engineer with a shipping company based in the UK. While he was working, he started to help his friends prepare for the CAT exam, an entrance exam for getting into the best business schools in India. To test himself, Byju also gave the exam and secured 100 percentile! He did not join any of the IIMs but started teaching students for their mathematics exams.
Initially, he took mathematics workshops for free and then started charging a fee when he was confident about his prowess. At one point his workshops were so popular that more than 20000 students participated in one such workshop. In the year 2009, he started to record videos of the workshops he organized.
His former students who graduated from the IIMs encouraged him to start BYJU’s classes. ‘Think and Learn Pvt Ltd’ was then formed to create content for school students. He launched Byju’s - The Learning App in 2015, and the app was downloaded by more than 5.5 million people in the first year itself.

Just wanted to make some points here :
    1. No matter how you try present it, it is clear that no hard hitting questions were asked in the podcast which are generally linked with Byjus (toxic work culture, lay off, accounting, etc) and the whole podcast only tried to show how great the company and its founder is
    2. It's quite clear that most of the positive comments are written by fake ID( CHECK WHEN THEY WERE CREATED AND YOU WILL SEE 9/10 WERE CREATED EXACTLY AT THE SAME TIME AS THE COMMENT WAS POSTED BY THEM
    3. Most of the negative comments are being deleted
I would just like to say that we understand that this is a business for you and providing knowledge to your audience is a byproduct. However, atleast let people have an opinion and be legit about your our work ... All I could think while watching this podcast is the movie Sanju where the whole point of the movie was to show how Sanjay dutt was never a bad person but only the byproduct of the circumstances ( this is much worse )
Highly disappointed. Hopefully this doesn't get deleted 🙂

This is just another paid promotion by Byju. Thier PR team is extremely devious. This interview is one such attempt.
I saw another video on Brut India, titled "Inside The Life of BYJU’S Cofounder | Brut Sauce" - ruclips.net/video/yFYGdzRVpiw/видео.html
Looks like the PR team is working day and night to correct the image of the organization by carefully planned and articulated videos being pumped into social media.
Funny thing is, even with so much widespread hate and criticism against Byju's and their horrible practices, the comments on this video and the one on Brut India's video are extremely positive. One does not has to think much how that is possible 😅

I just checked a lot of the positive comments. Your claim of 9/10 doesn't seem to be true.
That's ok I think. I'm just curious why this company is getting such hate. I feel it's mostly because education is a sensitive issue and the sales practices are unethical, but sales is unethical in several companies. In fact, sales is notorious for this.
I'm curious if you've actually seen the product, like Byju said in the podcast?

@@sarathpenumuru the worst thing is they will lie to you and your parents face for making their products sales increase. They will come at you with things like "live classes" and "two teacher mentorship" while in reality it is pre recorded classes and only preset questions which are answered by bots. Rarely a teacher will interact with your kid and yet "live interaction" is actually one of their main selling points.
As an ex employee, I can assure you they scam the life out of parents for money and bonuses.

      1. While joining they told it would be live interactive class but instead was a pre recorded video moving at its own speed no pause button no speed option just a fixed time to sit and watch the whole lec.
      2. Notes were not the same which tr made which explaining
      3. And also Doubt system was worse If you have any doubt in class then while attending that superfast lec ask your doubt in the down panel where some trs are already present to and it and if doubt occurs other time then only 5 to 6 doubts per month allowed after the limit is reached
      4. If any backlog you can watch only 2 previous lec done before in a week bec they don't provide recorded lecs after the lec ends and they had another app in which some previous recorded lecs of some old trs recorded in 2013 2014 are uploaded not the same tr teaching in live class
      etc etc etc
There might be my fault too but if my parents are paying 1L+ for this course then the returns should be up to the mark as well

I find it a bit hypocritical. In one podcast Raj hails Rajiv Talreja for expressing his views that businesses creating value should be celebrated, not the businesses burning crores of money and in this one he brings an entrepreneur who is doing exactly the opposite and he calls that business biggest start up of the world!
Oyo's Ritesh Agarwal is one more such scamster who was featured on his podcast. Ritesh's views on business/entrepreneurship might be good and worth learning something from but Oyo as a company is a disaster. Even after hearing so many negative reviews, recently I dared to book a stay through Oyo and I had exactly the same experience that complainants had spoken about. Such businesses won't last long. But Raj is seemingly appeasing every business and businessman that can get him recognition and views!
This, in particular, seems like a 2 hours long paid commercial for Byju's.

@@marathimanus1147 also Oyo as a company will succeed. Think about it. Before Oyo, hotels were expensive and no transparency. And couple friendly- hardly any hotels offered that. Oyo came in and changed everything. I'm quite confident they'll succeed in future. Ig Indians just have unrealistic expectations for what they're paying. Pay 600-700 per night and expect 5 star hotel experience

    • @marathimanus1147
      @marathimanus1147 Год назад +1

@@gokuls9062 Oyo did that successfully and it was their customer acquisition strategy. It worked in the beginning but currently the situation is terrible. It's just like what Zomato tried to do with their Zomato gold membership. The restaurants had to give up a lot of revenue due to these discounts and eventually many resturants quit and the program was abandoned. There are so many players that allow hotel rooms booking because of which there's a lot of competition. To beat the competition, Oyo offers a lot of discounts. Technically when you book a room with whatever discount, the aggregator company i.e. Oyo in this case, should bear the discount and pay the base price to the hotel owner. But now that doesn't seem to be happening. In many cases when you book a room through Oyo, the hotel owners say that they don't take bookings through Oyo. In some cases they are like we are sold out and there are no rooms available. In other cases they ask for more money at the time of check in. That's what was going to happen in my case recently. I booked a stay at 1600/-. Due to all negative feedback, I called up the hotel and requested them to confirm my stay and the fact that I won't have to make extra payment. The hotel receptionist said that he won't be able to confirm anything until it's 1/2 days before the stay and he also mentioned that their base price is 1800/- rupees (for a room without balcony). For a room with balcony it's 2500/. He continued that depending on the booking they receive for me, I will have to pay the difference. He was like 'if you book a room at 500/600 rupees, you can't expect to stay with us in such low amount '. Then I called up Oyo and told what hotel receptionist told me and also asked them confirm the booking on their part. The customer representative put me on hold for 15 mins saying he is trying to contact the hotel and confirm the booking. After those 15 mins he also stopped replying to me and ultimately the call got disconnected. I simply cancelled my booking and explored other options. So there seems to be no proper communication between Oyo and the hotels. And if they carry on like that, Oyo will have to file for bankruptcy one day or another.

The person sitting across you, pretending to be a mentor is also having renewal targets. Where they need to sell the renewals. If customers are having any doubt they call the customers care and they upsell the product! Everyone in byjus is working into sales and it’s not 20% there are 50k families dependent on the job you provide and if you are this much sure can you release the anonymous surveys you guys been conducting where 100% of the employers complain about toxic work culture. Can you release those reports and papers?

Okay truly speaking I joined Byjus back in class 8,9,10
I loved the classes & the animations were awesome (for that high school level) it really felt like education was genuinely being revolutionized while watching those lectures
But the real toxicity in this Byjus journey was that the sales guy of Byjus was literally like a person who was about to blackmail my parents that I've huge potential but without this proper guidance I won't be able to cope up.. That's why my parents had to pay ₹50k (tab + 3 year course)
To be honest i loved the course, I loved using the tab but it was not that much worth it.. but at the first place the way I was sold the product was genuinely toxic & it was like forcing my parents rather than giving them a free will.. Becz maybe my parents would've never spent such an amount on any online coaching.. But yes if you've enough money (upper middle class or rich enough) then yes byjus is a good way of teaching your kid
