Because most crimes of this type are not actually that important and would just keep the judicial system occupied with no pay-off, after all it's usually inconsequential and the amounts involved are usually 3 orders of magnitude lower. And that if it was important, which in this case it should have been, the prosecution should have moved with some pace on that, they certainly had all opportunity. The fundamental problem here is not the statute of limitations, but prosecution being corrupt.

Money laundering and tax evasion are not in Trump's repertoire of behaviors, as has been proven over and over through the corrupt lawsuits brought against him which he either defeated or were later defeated by the truth coming out.
Why would the statue of limitation still apply here after an active effort was made to cover this up and prevent the investigation on behalf of the defendant. Also, if the citizens are the victims of this crime and we are just now hearing about it, shouldn’t it matter when we actually discovered the crime had been committed. What role may things such as equitable tolling or discovery play in determining when charges can no longer be filed against somebody. Statute of limitations should be completely different when the crime was committed by politicians or cops. The people who create or enforce the laws have increased ability to evade detection or punishment for breaking those laws. I’m a (very) small business owner and have to financially comply with numerous financial demands of running a business, including paying taxes, payroll, income, sales. To get these paid, I’m not only on the hook for the money, but the time and additional resources to ensure they are paid properly and on time. Why would the statue of limitation still apply here after an active effort was made to cover this up and prevent the investigation on behalf of the defendant. Also, if the citizens are the victims of this crime and we are just now hearing about it, shouldn’t it matter when we actually discovered the crime had been committed. What role may things such as equitable tolling or discovery play in determining when charges can no longer be filed against somebody.
Statute of limitations should be completely different when the crime was committed by politicians or cops. The people who create or enforce the laws have increased ability to evade detection or punishment for breaking those laws. They really need a law on the books pausing the statute of limitation from starting until after a politician leaves office. Can’t we just put this crooked sociopath in prison so we can end this terribly embarrassing chapter of American history?

If you don't believe me, remember that people (including courts) have been trying to get an accurate estimate of his net worth for ages, but haven't been able to, because it's always been inflated by all sorts of real estate tricks. All of his worth is only on paper, so that ten million comes from that. It's basically the opposite of money laundering. While dirty money is cash you have but isn't on the books, Trump's money is on the books but he doesn't have the cash.
