    My grandmother taught me an old remedy for scours in calves. Toast a couple of cups of wheat flour in a pan until well toasted (the colour of well toast but not burnt). Mix with water and small amount of molasses and tablespoon of salt. Needs to be thin enough to pour down their throat. Consistency of cream is good. Fixes them right up 👍

I've been reading The Family Milk Cow, but I feel like the book is very conversational in tone--maybe even a tad rambling--so I would have to start over from the beginning and read the whole thing over with a pad of paper to write down all her suggestions. How long do you give the cow garlic? I have a Hereford jersey cow that just calves for the first time five days ago. My hope is that she would be able to feed all of her milk to the calf. Tonight I went out and began to experiment with milking her a little bit, and noticed that only one of her quarters seems free-flowing and clean, while the others are hot, and even one has some thin milky blood presenting. I did a mastitis card. One circle is yellow and three turned green. Will this change over time as the calf milks each quarter more consistently? Is this typical with a first time cow? Is this typical because it’s early in her partition? Anyone out there milking half Herford, half Jersey who could speak to if I necessarily have to milk her?

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  Год назад +1

      I give the cow garlic as long as she has signs of mastitis. The blood sounds a little sketchy.. mastitis is usually just clumpy. You might wanna get a vet out.. especially with three hot quarters 😬 If she’s a high producing cow you can’t rely on a newborn calf to get enough milk out. You should be milking at least once a day. I would milk more if she’s got mastitis. Leave the calf on 24/7 to help clean her out. I hope you get it figured out and cleared up!

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  10 месяцев назад +1

      Don't know in tons, but I feed around 6 round bales and maybe 30 small squares? Cows are not nearly as finicky as horses. I wouldn't wanna feed it if it was moldy all the way through, but the alfalfa bales I get are only a little moldy on one side. The cows will just not eat that part.

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  Год назад +1

      Totally depends on the individual cow, what they’re eating, what point they are in their lactation, and if you’re milking once or twice a day 😊 Our first cow was a Jersey. She was grass fed with only a little bit of grain at milking, and I was milking once a day. She was giving 5 gallons at her peak, but her average for a lactation was probably around 3 gallons. I think she was on the high end of production for a Jersey.
